EDUARDO NARANJO (Monesterio, Badajoz, 1944)."Portrait of a girl", 1981.Oil on canvas.Signed and dated in the lower right corner.Measurements: 64 x 49 cm; 65 x 50 cm (frame).The eighties was a period of maturity and establishment in Eduardo Naranjo's career. It was at this time that the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid awarded him the medal for his merits as a member of its board of directors for painting and a first monograph of the author was published. This portrait of a lady is a great example of this period, as we can appreciate the author's characteristic technical quality and his unmistakable aesthetic language, in which he treats realism from a dreamlike point of view. He shows before the spectator an image taken from everyday life, but distorting certain elements, thus enriching the image, an example of which is the background with a lake in the piece, and the large drawing on the stomach of a girl.Eduardo Naranjo began his artistic training in 1957 with his teacher Eduardo Acosta, and that same year he entered the Escuela de Artes y Oficios (School of Arts and Crafts). In 1960 he continued his studies at the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts in Seville, and a year later he moved to the San Fernando School of Fine Arts in Madrid, where he completed his studies. After his academic period, Naranjo decided to move to Paris, where he became deeply acquainted with the work of Picasso and artists such as Matisse. His work is defined by the technical exploration of painting, although he has also worked with sculpture and in the field of scenography. In addition, between 1986 and 1991 he made a series of engravings for the book "Poeta en Nueva York" by Federico García Lorca. Eduardo Naranjo's artistic career includes important prizes and awards, such as the Luis de Morales de Badajoz prize (1974), the Medal of Extremadura (1991), the María de Salamanca National Engraving Prize of the Museum of Contemporary Spanish Engraving (1994) and the Cross of Military Merit for his contribution to the Arts and the Army (1995). Throughout his career he has held solo exhibitions all over the world, and today he is one of the most sought-after living Spanish painters. In fact, his fame is international, being admired in countries as far away as China, where he has exhibited numerous times and has been invited to give master classes in Chinese universities. Today his work is divided between private international collections and numerous public museums, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and the Nagasaki Museum in Japan, as well as countless private collections, including the Masaveu Collection in Oviedo.

Ondine (also known as “Undine”), a mythological figure of European tradition, was a water nymph or sprite who could become human only when she fell in love with a mortal man. However, if the mortal was unfaithful to her, he was destined to forfeit his life. The Royal Automobile Club on London's historic Pall Mall was desinged and built by the fashionable architects Charles Mewes and Arthur Davis. They had already been lauded for the recently constructed Ritz hotels in Paris and London, and the interiors of some of the great ocean-going liners of the day. Opened in 1911 at the huge cost of £330,000, it has remained an iconic institution ever since. A carved white marble portrait bust of Nicolas Copernicus18th century inscribed Nicolo Copernico, Filosofo 68cm high by 43cm wide Nicolas Copernicus ,19 February 1473 – 24 May 1543) was a Renaissance polymath, active as a mathematician, astronomer, and Catholic canon, who formulated a model of the universe that placed the Sun rather than Earth at its centre. In all likelihood, Copernicus developed his model independently of Aristarchus of Samos, an ancient Greek astronomer who had formulated such a model some eighteen centuries earlier. The publication of Copernicus's model in his book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), just before his death in 1543, was a major event in the history of science, triggering the Copernican Revolution and making a pioneering contribution to the Scientific Revolution. Copernicus was born and died in Royal Prussia, a region that had been part of the Kingdom of Poland since 1466. A polyglot and polymath, he obtained a doctorate in canon law and was a mathematician, astronomer, physician, classics scholar, translator, governor, diplomat, and economist. From 1497 he was a Warmian Cathedral chapter canon. Der Buchbinder Antoine Joly und sein Sohn gehörte nicht zuletzt durch seine Qualitäten in Verarbeitung und Vergoldung zu den wichtigen französischen Buchbindern und arbeitete bei Gruel und Thibaron mit welchem er auch eine Werkstatt führte. Begleitet wird das Schreiben von einer Zeichnung, welche wohl das Porträt des Verfassers vor einer Küste mit einem Schiff und einem Zeltlager darstellt. Unter dem Bild gibt Colin der Familie die Anweisung, das Bild seiner kleinen Schwester Christine zu zeigen. - Mit mehrfach geglätteten Falzen sowie einigen Fehlstellen, Einrissen und Anschmutzungen. Verso mit zwei Etiketten der Agentur Schostal sowie zwei Stempeln von U.S. Pictures und Inventarnummer. -Else Ernestine Neuländer (1900-1942), genannt Yva, gründete bereits im Alter von 25 Jahren ihr eigenes Fotoatelier in Berlin und avancierte schnell zu einer gefragten Mode- und Portraitfotografin. Sie galt als innovative Fotokünstlerin, die avantgardistische Techniken verwendete und veröffentlichte ihre Bilder für Werbekampagnen in zahlreichen Publikationen. 1936 begann Helmut Newton in Yvas Atelier seine Lehrlingsausbildung. Bereits 1935 erhielt Yva ein Angebot des amerikanischen Life Magazine, entschloss sich jedoch gegen eine Auswanderung. 1938 musste sie ihr Atelier wegen des verhängten Arbeitsverbots schließen. Yva und ihr Mann wurden 1942 verhaftet und wahrscheinlich ins Vernichtungslager Sobibor deportiert, wo sie vermutlich auch ermordet wurden. - Etwas knitterspurig, leicht fingerfleckig und berieben. Vintage, silver gelatin. - Reverse with two labels from the Schostal agency as well as two stamps from U.S. Pictures and inventory number. -Else Ernestine Neuländer (1900-1942), called Yva, founded her own photo studio in Berlin at the age of 25 and quickly advanced to become a sought-after fashion and portrait photographer. She was considered an innovative photographic artist who used avant-garde techniques and published her images for advertising campaigns in numerous publications. In 1936, Helmut Newton began his apprenticeship in Yva's studio. As early as 1935, Yva received an offer from Life Magazine, but decided against emigrating. In 1938 she had to close her studio because of the imposed ban on working. Yva and her husband were arrested in 1942 and probably deported to the Sobibor extermination camp, where they were probably also murdered. - Somewhat creased, lightly fingerstained and rubbed. A pair of very attractive Sevres style brass mounted porcelain Candle Sconces, each crested with a brass ribbon bow, above a French porcelain dish, one decorated with two children in a garden, the other with portrait of King Louis, each on white and blue celeste ground with smaller floral panels and grotesque mask, below issuing two candle arms, 36cms high x 26cms wide (14" x 10").
