Some splashes/ flecks of gilt paint which could have been from when this frame was regilt (the frame is quite crudely done).

Attributed to Nathaniel Hone RA (Irish, 1718-1784)Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a red cape, fur stole and white lace bonnetoil on canvas, feigned oval56 x 48cmCondition ReportFramed: 76.5 x 64cm.The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which has been lined. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers have developed a network of age cracks with some prominent, circular impact cracks – notably to the left of the sitter’s face. The paint layer is in a good, stable condition overall. There are a few areas of overpaint, mainly in the background, but also covering cracks in the sitter’s face. The varnish layer is thick and glossy, it has yellowed with age and there are a few drip marks across the surface. The varnish is slightly smeary and opaque in some areas.

There is craquelure throughout and stretcher marks apparent. There is a vertical line down the left side of the composition with some minimal retouching at points, see photo with my finger indicating the location. Under UV light, there is evidence of minor spots and flecks of retouching in places throughout the composition, mostly to the background but there is a small scratch to the face which has been repaired, see illustration. In general, however, for a painting of this size and age it has survived very well and there are no large areas of retouching apparent or signs of repaired tears. The work is the compainion for 'Portrait of the Hon-ble Sir John Brydges', sold by Abell Auctions in Los Angeles, lot 4, 21 February 2021, catalogued as "Attributed to".

English School, 1626Portrait of a gentleman, standing three-quarter-length, in a red doublet with lace collar and cuffsinscribed and dated 'Ætatis sua 36/anno 1626' u.r., with later inscription 'Zuchero PINXt.' u.r. and a further indistinct inscription u.l., indicated by the small hand pointing, oil on canvas73 x 59cmCondition ReportOverall 95 x 82cmThe painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers have suffered from wear and abrasion but is stable overall. There is loss and cracking in the upper left corner. Here a window is visible with clouds and a sunburst. Below this is a small hand pointing to an inscription which is very worn and difficult to read, but possibly a motto. The inscription at the upper right hand corner is worn and has been reinforced, this is likely to be original to the picture. The inscription below this reading ‘ZUCCHERO PINX.’ is a later addition painted in yellow with abraded gilding across the surface. The canvas weave is evident in the worn flesh paint. Overpaint has been applied across the surface which is acceptable at a normal viewing distance. The varnish is clear and even.Unfortunately we do not know the identity of the sitter, it is possible they were named on the indistinct inscription upper left which is now obscured.

Continental School, 19th centuryPortrait of a gentleman, bust-length, in a black coatoil on canvas60 x 48cmCondition ReportOverall 78.5 x 66.5cmThe portrait appears to have been cut down, there is craquelure and some thinning to the paint, perhaps due to previous restoration. Under UV light the surface is obscured by a thick and dirty varnsh. There are several small spots of retouching apparent to the background near the edges, but there is nothing else that apparent. Some light fine craquelure in places. Under UV light, there are some small flecks of retouching in places probably infilling to craquelure, however what can be seen is quite minor. It may be there is more under the varnish, but generally the painting looks in a good stable condition and ready to hang.

The canvas is lined and in plane. There are some areas of retouching apparent to the eye, mainly to the upper background. Under UV light there are more areas to the lower edge. The surface is covered with a thick layer of varnish which makes any reading under UV light difficult. There may be some further older retouchings in places, however, there is nothing fluorescing strongly. In general, the work is presented in a stable condition and while it may benefit from a light clean, it is ready to hang.

The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good condition overall and stable. There are a few localised areas of overpaint which have slightly darkened over time. The varnish is glossy and slightly uneven due to the texture of the paint layers below.

Circle of Francis Alleyne (1750-1815)Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Mrs Mary Compton (née Dacres), lady in charge of the royal children of George III, seated half-length, at her needleworkoil on canvas, oval29.5 x 25cmCondition ReportOverall 46 x 40.5cmThe canvas has an old reline and is covered with a layer of dust both front and back. There is craquelure throughout. Under UV light there are several small flecks of retouchng to the background in places and to her upper lip. It is possible there may be some further infilling to the craquelure to the background on the left side but it is hard to see. In general, presented in a stable condition, would benefit from a light clean.

English School, 1584Portrait of a young gentleman, aged twenty-four, bust-length, in a black doublet with white ruffinscribed '1584 AT SVA. 24./AMICO HODIE CRAS MIHI' u.l. and u.r., oil on panel46 x 38cmCondition Reportoverall: 60x 52cmThe panel is in plane. There is a small vertical crack from the top edge approximately 4cm in length. In the past, there has been significant lifting which has been consolidated. This has left the surface quite uneven and there is evidence of significant retouching throughout. A thick varnish obscures much of the background and costume. There is retouching to the face and ruff of the sitter. This is particularly apparent to the forehead.

Los 48

Circle of Jonathan Richardson (1667-1745)Portrait of a lady, half-length, in a red dressoil on canvas, oval76 x 63cmCondition ReportThe canvas has been lined. There is craquelure throughout and stretcher marks are apparent. The surface is covered with a thick green varnish which obscures much of the background entirely. Under UV light there is some infilling to the craquelure in places, notably the chest. Also some strengthening to the jawline and edges. There are more general areas of retouching to the red wrap and also the face and hair. It is possible this can be seen because the thick green varnish has been partially removed in these places. See additional image. Presented in a stable condition.

Under UV light, there is fine infilling to some of the craquelure in places, and some strengthening around the face and chest. There are some scattered small flecks in places around the composition. After Sir Anthony van DyckPortrait of Queen Henrietta Maria (1609-1669), wife of King Charles I, half-length, in a gold dress with lace collar and cuffs, decorated with pearlsoil on canvas105 x 82cm, in a 17th-century-style carved giltwood frameAfter the original in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.Condition Reportoverall frame measurements: 116 x 93cmThe canvas is lined, there is some degradation to the varnish upper right, there are areas of unevenness and discolouration to the paint surface in parts, suggesting there may be areas of retouching. Under UV light, there background is obscured by a thick layer of varnish which makes any reading impossible. The remainder fluoresces slightly, suggesting there are areas of retouching or a general light wash has been applied over the figure and dress. It is unclear the reason for this as no specific damage (tear) is apparent. The painting appears to date from the 17th century. The painting is well presented in a stable, ready to hang condition. Attributed to Thomas Phillips RA (1770-1845) Portrait of George Legge, 3rd Earl of Dartmouth, Lord Chamberlain of the Household of George III, seated half-length, in a black coat and holding an agate snuff box oil on canvas 76 x 63cm, unframedA three-quarter-length portrait of the 3rd Earl, seated in an armchair beside a bust, after an original by Phillips, was engraved by Charles Heath in 1814. The artist records two paintings in his sitter book (nos. 288 and 411) for the years 1810 and 1815.Condition ReportOil on canvas which has been lined. There is water staining on the reverse of the painting which may account for some of the structural issues discussed below. The lining canvas is failing at the right edge with the original canvas coming away. There are also small tears beginning to form in the tacking edges. In the area of the sitter's right shoulder there is blistering in the paint layer leading to paint losses. There are also losses and areas of vulnerable paint along the lower edge. There are localised retouchings in the sitter's face and background covering drying cracks which are well matched to the original. The varnish has been affected by moisture leading to blooming across the surface. The varnish has become yellow as it has aged and dull. There is a layer of surface dust on the front and reverse of the painting.
