Portrait frontispiece of Lawrence in Arab dress.

Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and 103 chromolithographic plates. Bound in quarter black russia, lettered and decorated gilt with claret cloth sides. The leather is somewhat rubbed, especially at the extremities; the head of vol. one is chipped and the head of volume three has minor loss. The spine gilt which includes a 105 mm tall eagle is still bright. There is some light foxing but overall this is internally clean and bright. First edition. 4to. One of an edition of 1500 copies. Illustrated with forty-eight wood engravings by the author, twenty-five of which are coloured by hand. Light spotting to the first two leaves, otherwise internally very clean and bright in the original blue cloth, lettered and decorated on the upper cover in gilt. Top edge gilt. In a dustwrapper with the odd tear, some minor loss and a few chips. (8)

This copy contains two plates by Buss at pages 69 and 74, which were cancelled by Dickens in later issues and replaced with plates by "Phiz".

Five silver and niello snuff boxes the first, maker's mark erased, French, mid 19th century, the rim engraved: A. Tanfani Roma, the lid with a portrait of Pope Pius IX within lilies and other flowers; another French box, decorated in similar taste with a pastoral subject within strapwork; a Russian box, Moscow, 1888 decorated with a summer troika; and two small Russian and French boxes ornamented with foliage 10-6cm, 4- 2Gin (5)
A wax portrait relief, by Richard Cockle Lucas, signed, inscribed and dated 1850 of: The Very Revd. T. Garnier, Dean of Winton, in profile to sinister, wearing high stock and vestments, on an oval brown wax ground height 16.5cm, 6Iin Richard Cockle Lucas (1800-1883) was born in Salisbury and died in Chilworth, Hampshire. Apprenticed at the age of 12 to an uncle who was a cutler, he later attended the Royal Academy Schools where he won several medals. His model of the Parthenon (1845) was bought by the British Museum and there was considerable dispute as to whether he was the author of a bust of Flora in Berlin, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. Lucas executed a number of portraits of Dean Garnier (another of 1850 is in the National Portrait Gallery - NPG 4844). The divine (1776-1873), of Huguenot origin, had become Prebendary of Winchester in 1830 and Dean in 1840. He was a friend of Palmerston and a staunch Whig.
The Baillie Family. An unusual ivory group, probably Dieppe, late 19th century carved after the painting by Gainsborough, with Mr and Mrs James Baillie and their four children height 27cm, 10Kin, on cut-cornered rectangular ebonised wood plinth Thomas Gainsborough painted his portrait of the Baillie family of Ealing Grove around 1784. It was bequeathed to the Tate Gallery in 1868 by Alexander Baillie of Naples, presumably a descendant and perhaps one of the children portrayed. James Baillie of Dochfour was MP for Horsham.

An Edward Hanlan commemorative glass rowing mug, moulded with a portrait of the rower inscribed 'Edward Hanlan, Champion of the World, Nov. 15th 1880 beat Trickett of NSW', flanked by crossed oars, height 10.7cm, moulded registration diamond for December 1880. Hanlan became world champion sculler by defeating the professional champion, E.A. Trickett of New South Wales, over a course on the River Thames; he subsequently successfully defended his title six times in both England and North America
A Minton & Hollins Victoria 1887 golden jubilee paperweight, of rectangular shape covered with green glaze, moulded with a portrait of the Queen with monogram and 'JUBILEE / 1887', height 11.6cm, detailed impressed mark with maker's name and addresses with 'Rd.68307', circa 1887 (minor edge chipping)
A rare Frederick Duke of York commemorative mug, of cylindrical shape with slightly flaring foot and simple strap handle with moulded lower terminal, printed in blue with an equestrian portrait titled 'His Royal Highness FREDERICK DUKE of YORK' with a battle scene in the background, a geometric border inside the rim and a geometric and flower design up the handle, height 12cm, unmarked, circa 1793.
