DAVID COWAN DOBSON (1894-1980), PORTRAIT OF LADY HOLDING A RED ROSE, signed lower right, oil on canvas, framed. 123cm by 97.5cmNote: David Cowan Dobson (1894–1980) was a leading Scottish portrait artist of his day. Dobson was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, the second son of the Scottish portrait painter Henry John Dobson (1858–1928). Dobson started his career in Scotland. He was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh and studied art in Edinburgh, London and Paris. In 1918 he was using his father's studio at Dalry. Around 1920 he moved to London and from then on he worked and resided mainly in London. Occasionally, he would work in and around Glasgow. He is said to have rented Kenmure Castle, in New Galloway, Kirkcudbrightshire, in the 1930s and 1940s to entertain and paint fashionable sitters.
A GROUP OF FOUR PORTRAIT SILHOUETTES, 19th CENTURY AND LATER, one reverse-printed on glass of a lady in a high lace collar, a pair of a boy and girl facing sinister, gilt-highlighted, the fourth of a lady in elaborate coiffure, each in an ebonised frame; together with a portrait miniature of a lady in the manner of Stieler, oval, in an ivorine frame. A German bisque head doll, having rolling brown eyes with painted brows and lashes, open mouth with four top teeth showing, with jointed composition body, marked DEP, h.58cm; together with another German(?) bisque head doll, having fixed blue eyes with painted mouth, stuffed body and composition limbs, with portrait and ribbon mark, h.32cm (2)PLEASE NOTE: This lot was removed from a house that was in a damp and untouched condition for a number of years, and this may be reflected in the condition of some of the clothes/hair etc.Further information: Head is very good with some light marks; little finger missing on right hand; some glue marks around top of head. He was physician to George 4th. The painting was given to him earlier in his career as medical attendant to the Duke of Cumberland before his Grace died in 1765. Edward Holdich was married but had no children and the picture has been passed down the related family ever since.
