Group of early 19th century portrait miniatures on paper including oval portrait of a gentleman named verso as James Vans, Midshipman, perished in the Queen Charlotte, burnt near Leghorn, March 17th 1800, 3rd son of Robert Vans Agnew of Strachan and Frances Dunlop, his wife, 7 x 6cm, in glazed frame, and three further unframed watercolours including two further variants on the same sitter and another named as Robert Vans Agnew, 2nd son of Robert Vans Agnew of Strachan and Frances Dunlop, died in Antigua of fever. (4). NB: The Queen Charlotte was a 100 gun first rate ship of the line and flagship of Admiral Lord Howe, which accidentally caught fire off the island of Capraia, The crew was unable to extinguish the flames and at about 11am the ship blew up with the loss of 673 officers and men.
George III miniature portrait on ivory of an infant, named to the frame as Mountstuart Elphinstone, depicted in a high chair, 9 x 6cm, glazed frame. NB: Mountstuart Elphinstone (1779-1859) was a Scottish Stateman who was governor of Bombay from 1819-1827, promoted education in India, at a time when opinion in Britain was against educating the "natives". He may fairly be regarded as the founder of the system of state education in India. One of his principal achievements was the compilation of the "Elphinstone code.", he was one of the seven founder members of the Royal Geographical Society in 1830. APHA Ref: VZJ1P6QE

Mrs Erskine, 1803, by Charlotte Jones (1768-1847), signed and dated 1803 to rear, 8 x 6cm, another of woman in white dress named to label to rear as Mrs John Agnew nee Stevens, the third a lady with white dress and headscarf unnamed. NB: John Elphinstone, the 1st Baron Elphinstone (1807-1860) was a Scottish soldier, politician and colonial administrator. He was twice elected to the Parliament of the United Kingdom as a Scottish representative peer, was also Governor of Madras and Bombay.

Of Jacobite interest: Fascinating album relating to the Erskine family - the substantial quarter calf album with marbled board ends containing various ephemera from the 16th century onwards, the majority specifically relating to the Erskine family of Cadross, including cuttings and letters relating to Lieutenant Colonel Charles Erskine of the 92nd Highlanders in Alexandria, Egypt in 1801, relating how he was injured in battle, had a leg amputated and subsequently died of his wounds, including several letters to his father from military figures including Sir Ralph Abercrombie, Commander of the British Forces in Egypt and others from well wishers including the Marquis of Huntley, Lady Perth. Then a sequence of letters and newspaper clippings relating to the rediscovery of Charles Erskine’s body in 1894, the skeleton identified through the amputation of the leg and a locket bearing the legend ‘I desire that this locket shall be buried along with me’ and the subsequent reinterment in the British Cemetery in Alexandria, with arrangements for a monumental stone. Bill for the engraved etching plate made in 1802, taken from Raeburn’s portrait of Lieutenant Colonel Charles Erskine. Then a sequence of letters from, and drafts of letters to James Stuart, the Old Pretender, and his wife Clementina in correspondence with the Countess of Bute, including letters from James Stuart and one from his wife Clementina, and various drafts of letters from the Countess of Bute, including one to the Old Pretender on the birth of Charles Edward Stuart, ‘The young pretender’ the sequence dating from 1716, one letter to John Stewart, son of James, Earl of Bute, another addressed to Mrs Broomeley, 1729, also an epitaph to John Stewart, son of James Earl of Bute, who was attached to the Court of the Old Pretender in Rome for 12 vears and who died in 1739. The album also contains two receipts from Henry Raeburn, for paintings of members of the Erskine family, 1782 garter robe order signed by George III for Thomas Baron Pelham, letters written to Lord Keith by sons of George III - William. Duke of Clarence, Edward, Duke of Kent, Frederick, Duke of York and Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, an 18th century wine bill, letters relating to the estate of Cadross, military manoeuvres in Egypt and India and various other contents
