Albert Aublet (French, 1851-1938) Portrait of Mademoiselle Rickert signed upper right "A Mlle Rickert, hommage amical, Albert Aublet, 1895" charcoal on buff paper 40 x 28cm Albert Aublet was the only protégé and pupil of Claude Monet. Aublet was born in January 1851 and completed his artistic training under the history and genre painter Claude Jacquand (1804-1878) between 1870 and 1874. Well-known for his lovely portraits, he bridged the gap between Impressionism and traditional realism. He was also a sculptor, exhibiting busts at La Nationale and Les Artistes Francaises between 1910 and 1936. He exhibited paintings also regularly at these two institutions, from 1890 to 1914 at the former, and 1920 to 1937 at the latter. He was awarded a Gold Medal at the Universal Exhibition in 1889 and the Legion of Honour in1890. Amsterdam, London and Madrid also bestowed Gold medals on him and he received Silver Medals from Munich and Nice.
Pinckney Marcius-Simons (American, 1867-1909) Portrait of Cardinal Richelieu signed lower left "Marcius Simons" oil on canvas 68 x 77cm Provenance: Private collection, Cambridge The present painting shows Richelieu with his hand on the death warrant of the five plotters and a map of Richelieu's plans to enlarge France. Pere Joseph sits, cowled, on the far side of the table and the pair are surveyed by the ghost of Louis XIII, whilst the Dauphin sits with his back to them facing the fire.
Danish School (18th Century) Portrait of Princess Frederika Louise of Augustenburg, wearing Ermine, and holding a Fur Muff with a Jewelled Clasp (1699-1744) oil on canvas 75 x 60cm Princess Frederika Louise married Christian August, Duke of Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg on 21 July 1720. She is the great grandmother of King Constantine of Greece and HM Carl Gustaf of Sweden.
Samuel Sidley, RBA, ARCA (British, 1829-1896) Portrait of Miss Harriet Sidley, as Alice in Wonderland, in a Lace Dress with Blue Ribbons and with her Hair in Ringlets inscribed on the reverse "Samuel Sidley pinxit" oil on canvas 54 x 41cm Sidley was a highly successful portrait painter - his later painting of Alice in Wonderland was engraved and enjoyed great popularity.
Charles Edmund Brock, RI (British, 1870-1938) An Elegant Lady passing two Gentlemen outside a Country House, possibly Anstey Hall, Trumpington signed lower right "Charles E Brock 1904" oil on canvas 74 x 120cm Provenance: Private collection, Dorset We are delighted to have paintings from a private collection in Dorset, all by the Brock brothers, who lived and painted in Cambridge - Charles Edmund Brock, Henry Matthew Brock and Richard Henry Brock. Charles Edmund Brock (1870-1938) was a portrait painter and illustrator. He was born in Holloway, London, and studied at Cambridge, and also under the artist Henry Wiles. He was the eldest of four artist brothers, and he lived in Cambridge and exhibited at the Royal Academy seven times between 1897-1906, and at the Royal Institute in 1908. He contributed to Punch, the Graphic, he illustrated Hood's Comic Poems 1893, Gulliver's Travels in 1894, and other works. Charles Brock obtained his first book commission at the age of 20. He became a very successful illustrator for authors such as Jonathan Swift, William Thackeray, Jane Austen and George Eliot. He is best known for his line work, initially working in the tradition of Hugh Thomson, but he was also a skilled colourist, adapting his work whether for sensitive novels through to soldiers, rustic and horsey stories, and drawing grotesqueries to amuse children in story books. Brock's portrait of John Venn, the mathematician, hangs at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. His brothers Henry Matthew and Richard Henry were also artists and all three shared the same studio in the city. The brothers maintained a Cambridge studio filled with various curios, antiques, furniture and a collector's items.
A 16th Century Romayne Panelled Coffer. The plank top having chip carved side edges. The front carved with four carved Romayne panels flanked by run-moulded muntins. Each panel depicting a head & shoulder profile portrait within a foliate roundel with floral corner motifs & various scrolling cartouche surmounts. Standing on bracketed stile feet 29 ins (73½ cms) high, 65½ ins (166.5 cms) wide, 20 ins (51 cms) deep.
An Intricately Carved Coquilla Nut Snuff Box of pointed oval form. The lid bearing two small roundels carved with a man & woman in profile within a cluster of flowers. Both ends carved with feline faces and the base decorated with a profile portrait of a man within a wreath of flowers. 3¾ ins (9½ cms) in length.
