Circle of Cosimo Rosselli Portrait of a lady, in a low bodice, a chain and locket round her neck with a green and gold coif in her hair Tempera on panel Indistinct inscription on reverse of frame 52cm x 35cm In a 19th century Italian painted and parcel gilt cassetta frame Provenance: Christie's sale, "Pictures in oil and watercolour formed by the well known amateur William Graham of Grosvenor Place", 2nd April 1886, Lot 348 as "Florentine School", Sold for 21gns , bought by Pryor Exhibited: MCAM, Nottingham, No. 100 (Unknown year) Traditionally this portrait has been ascribed to Piero Pollaiuolo (1443-1496); this was also the case with a similar work, Cosimo Rosselli's portrait of a young gentleman (Christie's Sale, The property of the late Lady Merton, 13th December 1985, Lot 78) which had the traditional attribution of Pollaiuolo. William Graham (1816-1885) was a Scottish merchant, politician, patron and collector. His art collection was based around early Italian, late fifteenth and early sixteenth century Venetian paintings which were frequently lent to exhibitions. Graham was one of Dante Gabriel Rossetti's most important patrons, not only purchasing his works, but inspiring him along with other artists including Edward Burne -Jones, with his fine collection of early Italian paintings. A year before Graham's death he was appointed as a Trustee of the National Gallery. This picture was bought at the sale of the entire William Graham collection, which consisted of over 400 important works, many of which are now in major collections in Europe and North America.
