DOYLE ARTHUR CONAN: (1859-1930) Scottish Author, creator of Sherlock Holmes. A good vintage signed cabinet photograph, the image showing Doyle in a profile half length pose. Photograph by Elliott & Fry of Baker Street, London. Signed (`yours most truly, Arthur Conan Doyle`) in bold, dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer`s mount. Very slightly neatly trimmed to the edges, not affecting the image or signature, G Elliott & Fry, the eminent Victorian photography studio, occupied 55 & 56 Baker Street in London before moving to other premises in 1919. It seems appropriate that Doyle would have his portrait taken in Baker Street, his great creation, the detective Sherlock Holmes, living at the fictional 221B Baker Street.
STRAVINSKY IGOR: (1882-1971) Russian Composer. Blue ink signature (`I Stravinsky`) in the clear upper border of an irregularly torn portion of a newspaper page (approximately 7 x 8.5) featuring a portrait of the composer and printed text in Swedish. Together with Andres Segovia (1893-1987) Spanish Guitarist. A printed 8vo programme for a performance by Segovia at the Konserthuset, Stockholm, 22nd September 1959, signed and inscribed by the guitarist in blue fountain pen ink to an inside page featuring his portrait and a brief printed biography. Dated 1959 in his hand. G to VG
THATCHER MARGARET: (1925-) British Prime Minister 1979-90. Vintage blue ink signature (‘Margaret H. Thatcher’) and date, 3rd September 1966, in her hand, on a page removed from an autograph album. Matted in blue beneath a colour 7.5 x 9.5 portrait photograph of the Prime Minister. 11.5 x 16 overall. VG Thatcher served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Pensions from 1961-64 and was Member of Parliament for Finchley from 1959-92.
HARRIS ARTHUR T.: (1892-1984) British Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of RAF Bomber Command during World War II. Signed First Day Cover commemorating the Sopwith Tabloid and featuring a colour image of the aircraft bombing a Zeppelin in its shed at Dusseldorf on 8th October 1914. Post marked at Jersey, 19th November 1981. Signed (`Arthur T. Harris MRAF`) in bold black ink to a clear area. Together with Leonard Cheshire (1917-1992) British RAF Pilot of World War II, Victoria Cross winner. The obverse depicts the figure of peace caressing a shield embossed with a portrait of Lord Nelson. The reverse is decorated with a scene of the British Fleet at Aboukir Bay. The edge bears an inscription from Alexander Davison. G

OWENS JESSE: (1913-1980) American Athlete, famous for his participation at the Berlin Olympics in 1936 where he became the first American to win four Olympic Gold medals in track and field events. Signed First Day Cover commemorating Dwight D. Eisenhower and featuring a portrait of the American President. Post marked at Washington DC, 10th May 1971, and with eight identical postage stamps featuring Eisenhower’s portrait. Signed by Owens in black ink to a clear area, adding “36†Olympia in his hand beneath his signature. VG

The original Paramount Pictures publicity portrait dates from 1946 and was issued for one of Lake`s more famous films, The Blue Dahlia, a film noir in which she starred as Joyce Harwood alongside Alan Ladd. Signed in blue ink to the image, her surname across a slightly darker area although still legible. VG
