An interesting soldier’s “Collins Portable Diary” for 1915, named on the fly leaf to “Private V.E. Rogers, 1875 S.M.F.A.” (South Midland Field Ambulance), and in pencil “On Active Service in Belgium and France - 48th (Sth Mid) Division”, entries commence with resume of the war up until Jan 3rd, after which entries are continued in the Daily Diary, with brief entries regarding training at Chelmsford, progress of the war including such entries as “Zeppelins L3 and L4 wrecked”, arrival in Havre end of March, from which time there are regular daily entries detailing locations (Armentieres, Ploegsteert, Petit Point, Hyde Park Corner, etc), heavy shelling, casualties, sick parades, etc. Basically GC (worn and dirty as would be expected); together with a sepia portrait photograph of Victor Rogers in the uniform of a Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment, inscribed on the back at a later date “Mr Rogers, 1918” GC. Note: Details of his medal card show V.E. Rogers as being a Private in the Royal Army Medical Corps, a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, and a Lieutenant in the Sussex Regt.
