Charles Mendelssohn Horsfall (British, 1865 - 1942), Portrait of Mrs Norah Frost, signed and dated 1930 (upper left), titled verso, oil on canvas, 91 x 71 cm, in a giltwood frame 112 x 91.5 cm The collection of the late Robert HicksonRobert was a noted London antique dealer for over 40 years. Robert started in the Silver departments in Garrards in London at the age of 15 and by the age of 20 he had risen to manage Brompton Gallery in Knightsbridge. Robert had a long and successful career within the antique trade and had a particular passion for Silver and antique Eccentricities, his passion and connoisseurship are reflected in his collection. The canvas is unlined. The surface is dirty and will benefit from a clean. There is a puncture to the canvas, upper centre, and a few scattered scratches and abrasions. Central stretcher impression is visible and this has caused a small area of fine craquelure. There is also craquelure visible to the left corner along the left and lower stretcher marks. There is no evidence of retouching visible under UV light.
British School (20th Century), bust-length portrait of a young man, unsigned, oil on canvas, 43.5 x 35 cm, framed 51.5 x 43 cmFrom the collection of Luke Gertler, son of artist Mark Gertler.The canvas has not been lined. Light surface dirt is visible throughout. Craquelure is visible, most noticeably to the sitter's hair. There appears to be old damages to the sitter's cheek and chin. There are several other scattered scratches and abrasions. UV light reveals several scattered retouchings to hair, to aforementioned damages to cheek and chin, to clothing and a few spots elsewhere.
