CHIANG KAI-SHEK: (1887-1975) Chinese Political and Military Leader of the Republic of China 1928-75. Signed 3.5 x 5.5 compliment card, in Chinese characters, by the Generalissimo. The card bears a blind embossed sun at the head above the printed text "The President of the Republic of China". Signed in bold black fountain pen ink below the printed text. The card has been neatly matted in black, alongside a 5 x 7 photograph of Chiang Kai-Shek showing him in a close-up portrait wearing his uniform, to an overall size of 12 x 8. Accompanied by the original envelope sent from the office of the President of the Republic of China. Very small age wear, otherwise VG £200-300
MÉLIÈS GEORGES: (1861-1938) French Film Director, a Pioneer of cinema and Innovator in the use of special effects. Rare A.N., one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., being a hand written list of photographs and drawing designs of his own for an exhibition. A fifteen list items including `1. Stage setting model - 2. Theatre and backstage layout - 3. Large portrait of Robert Houdin - ….7. The auditorium seen from stage - 8. The stage seen from the auditorium - ... 10. A Louis XV medallion of the hall. - 11. Outdoors photograph of the theatre (Boulevard des Italiens) - 12/13/14. The rebellious beheaded..´ Many of these list items are referred to in the multiple Academy Award winning film Hugo (2011). VG £600-900 Jean Eugène Robert Houdin (1805-1871) French Magician. Widely considered the father of the modern conjuring. American magician and escape artist Harry Houdini (born Ehrich Weiss) was so impressed by Robert-Houdin that, after reading his autobiography, he adopted the stage name of "Houdini" in honour of Robert-Houdin. In 1852, the Theatre Robert-Houdin moved from its original location to the Boulevard des Italiens in Paris. Ownership passed from Robert-Houdin's son Emile to his widow who sold the theatre in 1888 to Georges Méliès. Méliès was himself a magician. He accidentally discovered stop-action special effects, and presented his creation at the Theatre Robert-Houdin.
HANDY W. C.: (1873-1958) American Composer & Musician, considered the “Father of the Blues”. A good T.L.S., W.C.Handy, one page, 4to, New York, 3rd December 1957, on his personal printed stationery, to Mr. Hartman. Handy thanks his correspondent for his greetings on his birthday and states in part `The Mayor of this great city proclaimed November 10th through 17th as “Handy Weel” and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers sponsored a dinner as a tribute to me and for the benefit of the W.C. Handy Foundation for the Blind, Inc. The dinner was held in the Waldorf Astoria Grand Ballroom with a thousand diners listening to Paul Whiteman´s orchestra and many artists. After the Invocation, telegrams were read from Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Vice Pres. Nixon, Governor Harriman and others in various walks of life.´ Matted in black alongside an 8 x 10.5 portrait photograph of Handy, to an overall size of 17 x 12. VG £100-120
PUCCINI GIACOMO: (1858-1924) Italian Composer. A.L.S., Giacomo Puccini, two pages, written to the first and fourth page, 8vo, Nice, 21st march 1906, on the printed stationery of the Hotel Royal, Promenade des Anglais, Nice, to I. Spiridon, in Italian. Puccini apologizes for not being able to visit his correspondent as he promised, and states `I leave today, I have so many things to sort out and no free time remaining…´ A bold and good signature example. Small trace of former mounting to the first page, otherwise VG £400-500 Ignace Spiridon (1848- ?) Italian Portrait Painter established in Nice.
WEINGARTNER FELIX: (1863-1942) Austrian Conductor and Composer. Signed and inscribed 6.5 x 9 original pencil portrait of Weingartner by artist A. Bicis, the drawing depicting the conductor seated in a half length pose and writing. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink across the image, and dated in Buenos Aires, 30th August 1922 in his hand. The drawing has been affixed to a slightly larger brown card. Small overall creasing. G £80-100
CARUSO ENRICO: (1873-1921) Italian Tenor. An excellent bold ink self-portrait profile caricature in Caruso´s hand, on a 4.5 x 5.5 page, showing the tenor characterized in one of his opera roles. Signed `Enrico Caruso´ adding also to the head `Merci!´. Matted in black, alongside a 5 x 7 unsigned photograph of Caruso depicting the Italian tenor standing, in a three quarter length pose, in costume, to an overall size of 12 x 8. EX £300-400
GRIGORIEV BORIS: (1886-1939) Russian Painter, graphic Artist and Writer. Unusual and attractive original drawn portrait by Grigoriev, the drawing showing a woman´s profile portrait. Drawn to an 8vo page removed from a sketchbook, in charcoal pencil, and boldly signed (`Boris Grigoriev´) below the portrait. Left edge very slightly trimmed, otherwise VG £300-400
DUMAS ALEXANDRE: Fils (1824-1895) French Author and Dramatist. A.L.S., A D, and a sketch in Dumas´ hand, two pages, with sketch to the third page, 8vo, Paris, 19th April 1847, to Joseph Autran, in French. Dumas states `We all feel bad without you. I do not find anything to write to a canaille who decided to leave us. You could have written your tragedy in Paris, and the proof is that we did start one 5 days ago, and the first act is now finished. Ah! We did call you in vain every single morning my dear friend, but nothing!´ Dumas further refers to other colleagues, to writers meetings, works and awards. To the third page Dumas has drawn an amusing profile portrait sketch of Autran. Accompanied by the original envelope in Dumas´ hand bearing to the verso a red wax seal in fine condition. With a very small hole to the drawing page, not affecting the sketch, folded, otherwise VG £100-150 Joseph Autran (1813-1877) French Poet and Playwright, a close friend of Alexandre Dumas.

Titanic memorabilia: A White Star Lines and American Lines presentation panel to Captain James McGiffin, Marine Superintendent at Queenstown Ireland, presented to him upon leaving his position, signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer and dated 1912. The illuminated panel is inset with a portrait of the captain and with four printed vignettes including one possibly of the Titanic. Framed. 72cm x 73cm overall.The Titanic arrived in Queenstown on April 11th 1912 for final Atlantic crossing preparations. One of the last photographs known depicts Captain McGiffin with officers Lightoller and Murdoch. McGiffin had boarded Titanic to complete a final salute to the officers who were also old friends. The photograph shows the final moments where the officers were preparing to close the gangway and McGiffin return to shore on a tender.
