With the Addition of Many Subjects Not Before Collected to which are Prefixed a Biographical Essay on the Genius and Productions of Hogarth and Explanations of the Subjects of the Plates by John Nichols Esq F.S.A, 3/4 leather, marbled boards, gilt embossed decoration to spine, gilt edges to block, engraved self portrait frontispiece, one hundred and sixteen engraved plate pages, printed by Nichols And Son for Baldwin, Cradock And Joy, London 1822 (at fault) CONDITION REPORT:Binding shows fading, scuffs and shelf ware to the marbled boards, bumps to all corners, scuffs and shelf ware to the leather and minor splits to both sides of the top of the spine. All pages show some age-related darkening. The frontispiece page and title page show 1cm tears to the bottom edge of the bound in side. The first page of the biographical essay shows a full length double crease, with further creases visible to the bottom edges of some text pages and a full length crease to page XI which shows splits in some areas (no further creasing visible after this point). Some text pages show the odd small stain or mark. The plate index page shows some black finger marks. All 116 plate pages are present and appear to be in good condition.

An early Victorian black enamelled shaped oval mourning brooch, the front mounted with half-pearls and a colourless gem in a floral design, the back glazed with a hair locket compartment and inscribed ‘Evan Edwards obt 24 Aug 1842 aet 62’, width 4.1cm, an oval shell cameo brooch, carved as a portrait of a lady, unmarked, a rectangular carved jet brooch (pin lacking), another brooch, a pair of earrings and a Garrard & Co Ltd case.
DAY, Richard, A Booke of Christian Prayers, collected out of the ancient Writers. Small 4to, circa 1608. Commonly known as Queen Elizabeth's Prayer Book, it was first published in 1569 and there were further edition in 1578, 1590 and 1608. This copy begins on HI (folio 25) and ends on LLI (folio 125). Lacking portrait frontis of Queen Elizabeth kneeling, first 28 leaves and 15 leaves at the end. Folio 119 has only a stub left and folio 118 is missing half the leaf. Every page is surrounded by a woodcut border from the designs of Albrecht Durer, Hans Holbein and others, many showing emblems of mortality. Old calf, neatly rebacked, red edges. Sold with all faults. Lowndes p 1951-2.

Folio, 9th edition 1684, volumes 1 and 2 bound together, lacking volume 3. Lacking portrait frontis and three plates. One folding plate only present, which is defective. Several woodcuts in text. With an inscription at the head of the title page: 'The gift of Mrs Elizabeth Tallents, formerly wife to Mr William Figes of Great Ash, to the Chappel of Tilstock. April 1st 1698 (Tilstock is near Whitchurch, Shropshire). Contemporary panelled calf, remains of original clasps. Sold with all faults, not subject to return.

CONDITION REPORT: The portrait format picture is in generally good condition with no issues to the canvas or paintwork. The frame is in generally good condition. The portrait picture frame is in good condition. There are no holes to the canvas board but there is some shrinkage to the paint particularly around the right-hand side and all legs. This should be visible on our image.

The tacking edges appear slightly fragile but overall the canvas tension is good. There is a tear in the upper half of the picture with an area of paint loss surrounding it. Stretcher bar marks are evident in the paint layer following the wooden stretcher behind. The paint layers have developed a network of age cracks, some of are slightly raised and lifting. There are a few small, scattered areas of loss present. Apart from these issues, the paint layer is a good, original condition. The varnish has yellowed and appears dull with some dark, scattered spots around. There is a light layer of surface dirt present.Framed 105 x 95cm

In 1824, he joined the Bengal Army aged 19. The present portrait does not show him in a regimental uniform and was painted in 1830 whilst Higginson was already in the employ of Sir Charles Metcalfe, Bt. (1785-1846) who was born in Calcutta. Sir Charles was later Governor of Agra, Governor-General of India and Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces.
