Manner of Sir Joshua Reynolds [18th Century]- Portrait of a gentleman, thought to be Archibald Ogilvy of Rothiemay:, half-length, wearing buttoned waistcoat and over-jacket, white cravat, lace ruff and half wig oil on canvas 74 x 61cm. * Notes. If the portrait dates circa 1760 as we believe, this view supported by dress, wig style and canvas age would preclude the historical attribution of the sitter being Archibald Ogilvy whose dates are thought to be circa 1680- 1736. * Provenance. James Green [1771-1834]- Portrait of The Rev. Gilbert Wakefield: full-length seated in a study interior signed and dated 1795 watercolour 27 x 18cm. * Biography Gilbert Wakefield was the third son of the Rev. George Wakefield, rector of St Nicholas' Church, Nottingham and at Kingston Upon Thames. He was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he graduated in 1776. Wakefield took orders but left the Church of England to become a Unitarian. He earned his living as a classical tutor in various Dissenting academies including the infamous one at Warrington. Wakefield was a strong defender of the French Revolution and partook in the Revolution Controversy about which he wrote a seditious pamphlet for which he was imprisoned in Dorchester for two years. Towards the end of 1791 Wakefield's Translation of the New Testament with Notes, was published in three volumes and was well received and 'much more profitable to me than all my other publications put together'.
Circle of George Romney [1734-1802]- A portrait of an artist, standing three-quarter length, a palette in his left hand, the right hand raised high; pen ink and wash drawing, 21.5 x 14.5cms. with verso a portrait of a young gentleman wearing a tricorn hat, a hound at his side:- pen and ink drawing over pencil 21.5 x 15cms. (framed to view both drawings).

ENGLISH SCHOOL 19TH CENTURY Portrait of Admiral Thomas Cochrane*, 10th Earl of Dundonald GCB (1775-1860), in uniform and wearing star & sash, on ivory, 4.5 x 3.75 cms, together with a portrait of a young man wearing blue coat & red waistcoat, on ivory, 6.75 x 5.5 cms (English School late 18th century) (2) *Cochrane had an active naval career, serving from 1796, including on the Halifax and West India stations and in 1825 as Governor and Commander in Chief Newfoundland Islands. Appointed Rear Admiral in 1841.
