* ALEXANDER GOUDIE RP RGI (SCOTTISH 1933 - 2004), TOLEDO LANDSCAPE oil on canvas, signed, titled label verso image size 51cm x 61cm, overall size 63cm x 73cm Framed. Note: Alexander Goudie was born in 1933 at Paisley and, as a child, showed a prodigious talent for drawing. He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. It was these artists’ glorious virtuoso control of oil paint that appealed to Goudie, as well as their genre and realist subject-matter. Alexander Goudie was elected a member of the Glasgow Art Club in 1956 and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters in 1970. He painted a portrait of the Queen for the Caledonian Club, London (1992/93), and exhibited widely, showing at Harari and Johns, in London, the Fine Art Society, Glasgow, and the Musee de la Faience, in Quimper. Sir Timothy Clifford, former Director of the National Galleries of Scotland, said: ''At his best, Goudie could draw better than any of his rivals in Scotland. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Collections: 79 of Goudie's paintings are held in UK public collections.

* JENNIFER MCRAE RSA (BRITISH b. 1955), TEMPEST FUGIT: THE KEY AND THE CAT BOX oil on board, inscribed with title verso image size 136cm x 121cm, overall size 143cm x 128cm Framed. Note: McRae studied at Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen from 1987 to 93. Since 1988 her work has appeared in group and solo exhibitions in Britain and America, and she has won numerous awards including the BP Travelling Scholarship in 1999. Best known for her distinctive portraits, she has had work commissioned from the National Portrait Gallery, London and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The artist wrote an explanation of her Inspiration for this work and some of the symbolism, in a letter to the owner “As a single parent I also wanted to convey the unease created at the time from the one to one situation and the imbalance any outside relationship can sometimes cause, which explains why we sit a little vulnerably upon a large three-cornered triangle. The pair of shoes in the top left corner signifies something I remember from my child-hood, where my own mother once stressed that she would often sacrifice her own wardrobe to keep me well-shod. (I hasten to add my parents are now enjoying the rewards of a good income now we have all left home) and the reference is to be taken with a definite tongue in cheek! In fact it is a matter poking fun at the seriousness of the situation. The time elements (through the clock and the title) is to convey the precious hours alone and undisturbed before Christmas, my daughter, would burst in and everything would change and the key is her weapon for this intrusion. The cat-box is a beautiful and strange creature I purchased primarily to put into a painting (it is made of wood) and it does in fact open along its middle. Inside I keep my cash, so it’s significant that Christmas clutches it so determinedly! When I saw it in a shop window I knew it would be a wonderful object to use. Anyway, those are all the surface clues explained but there are always the underlying emotions and thoughts that created them in the first place which are best left unexplained. A painting must always be enigmatic in essence.”

DeMontfort certificate of authenticity verso. Note: Sherree Valentine Daines has been at the forefront of British art for over 35 years – a truly remarkable achievement. Her exquisite paintings have been exhibited at such prestigious venues as the Tate Gallery, the Barbican and the Lord’s Museum and is held in many corporate and private collections all over the world. Sherree is both the critic’s choice and the people’s choice, winning many high profile awards, and she has been officially voted the UK’s leading Modern Impressionist. A familiar face on our televisions she has appeared in programmes as varied as ‘To the Manor Bowen’ and ‘This Morning’; recently she was seen painting a £75,000 commission of a society bride in Channel 4’s documentary, ‘How the Rich Get Hitched’, and the reaction of the bride put all the other extraordinary elements of her wedding in the shade! Daines is unsurprisingly one of the UK's most successful print artists and her signed limited editions are highly sought after at galleries and at auction. Her superb illustrated hardback book "Your Days, My Days" is now in its second edition. Many famous names in the world of show-business have sat for her including Joanna Lumley, John Sessions, Lord Sebastian Coe and Sir Michael Parkinson. She was also commissioned to paint portraits of Jonny Wilkinson and Martin Johnson for a pair of commemorative Limited Editions (signed by both artist and player). In 2017 she was honoured to paint a commemorative 100th birthday portrait of Dame Vera Lynn, and her most recent sitters have been celebrated British explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes and much-loved chef and broadcaster Rick Stein.

* ERLEND BROWN (BRITISH b. 1947). UNTITLED oil on panel, signed and titled verso overall size 76cm x 76cm Unframed, as always intended. Note: Erlend Brown was born in 1947 and is a nephew of George Mackay Brown. He attended Stromness Academy then studied at Edinburgh College of Art. He taught art in primary and secondary schools in Orkney for eight years before being appointed as the first curator of the Pier Arts Centre which opened in 1979. He worked there for twelve years, overseeing exhibitions of local and international artists. Since then he has been a full time artist working in Orkney and Zurich, Switzerland. He made drawings for a number of publications by George Mackay Brown: A Portrait of Orkney (1988), the story “Eureka” in The Sea King’s Daughter and Eureka (Balnain Books, 1991) and The Sea and the Tower (Bayeux, 1994). He created four of the fourteen large sails that hung between the pillars of St Magnus Cathedral in 1993 and 2017 forming the installation Sails in St Magnus: Pilgrimage of Earl Rognvald. Created for the 1993 St Magnus Festival, the work was based on the Orkneyinga Saga account of the 12th century voyage of Vikings from Orkney to the Holy Land. The saga relates that after the return from the 3 year voyage the Vikings dried their sails in the loft of the Cathedral. As well as poetry and other literature, Erlend’s work is influenced by the environment and ecology, and explores a variety of materials. Landscapes and seascapes reveal human presence, our constructions and detritus; sails bear the marks of journeys, physical and interior, their accrued memories and symbols. His work has been exhibited in Orkney, Shetland and the Western Isles; Edinburgh and London; the Faroes, Norway, France and Switzerland. At least seven of Erlend Brown's artworks are held in UK public collections.
