A bronze horse harness pendant with ribbed border and riveted suspension loop; to the flat disc an engraved profile portrait of a knight in mail with tunic over the top with floral decoration. Cf. Korshun, V.E. Yazcheskye Priveski Drevnei Rusi X-XIV Vekov, volume I, Moscow, 2012, items D.1.02-06. 9 grams, 54mm (2 1/4"). Property of an American collector; acquired 1980-2000. [No Reserve] Very fine condition.
17th century AD. A D-section silver hoop with flat elliptical bezel, pelleted border enclosing intaglio portrait bust of King Charles I flanked by 'CR' (Carolus Rex, King Charles"). See Scarisbrick, D. Rings: Jewelry of Power, Love and Loyalty, London, 2007, p.190-1 for other examples of rings with portraits of Charles I. 13 grams, 25mm overall, 17.55x19.92mm internal diameter (approximate size British O, USA 7, Europe 14.98, Japan 14) (1"). Property of a Cambridgeshire collector; acquired on the UK art market 1940s; thence by descent 2004. Very fine condition.
18th-19th century AD. A gold round-section hoop with rectangular bezel, insert amethyst intaglio with portrait of a man in Roman style; inscription to the inner face: 'In memory of Twining(?) Esq., died 14(?"). aged 85'; in contemporary hinged case. 7.56 grams, 21.46 overall, 18.06 inner diameter (approximate size British P 1/2, USA 7 3/4, Europe 16.86, Japan 16) (3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired from a major Mayfair gallery; acquired on the London art market before 2000. Fine condition.
Dated 21st March 1801. A flat-section gold hoop with beaded edges and corrugated profile, band of reserved text to the middle 'Ann Chapman Ob 21 MAR 1801 ÆT 56 and hallmarked to the inner face with a portrait bust, a lion passant, 'E' within a cartouche (for 1800) and maker's mark 'MG'. 4.61 grams, 21mm overall, 19.61mm internal diameter (approximate size British T, USA 9 1/2, Europe 21.26, Japan 20) (3/4"). Ex Daniel collection. The maker's mark 'MG' is recorded by Jackson, Sir C.J. English Goldsmiths and Their Marks, London, 1921, p.486 but unascribed to any known maker. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
4th century BC. A gold-framed coin pendant with ribbed loop and crimped outer flange; the coin a silver drachm of Alexander the Great, posthumous issue with portrait bust of Herakles in lionskin mantle to the obverse, Zeus seated to the reverse with an eagle on his extended right wrist. 4.27 grams, 23mm (1"). Property of an Essex, UK collector; acquired London art market, 1960s-1980s. Fine condition.
