WILLEM KAREL FREDERIK TRAVERS (1826 - 1869) Half length portrait of John Leigh Douglas esq. Rear Admiral of the Red Squadron oF His Majesty's Fleet, with powdered grey wig and wearing gilt buttoned dark blue tunic, signed and dated '89, oil on canvas, 67 x 54cm oval; and companion portrait painted head and shoulders of a lady wearing lace headdress and shawl, similarly signed, dated '89 and inscribed 'copie', oil on canvas, 67 x 54.5cm oval (2) The lot is sold together with the commission warrant appointing John Leigh Douglas esq. to the post of Rear Admiral of the Red Squadron, dated February 1799 The works appear to be by the artist W K F Travers, however please note the discrepancy between the dates inscribed on the portraits and the recorded dates of the artist's demise

Joseph Otto Flatter (Austrian/British, 1894-1988):Self portrait of the artist, oil on canvas, signed lower left & dated '32, H 72 x W 58 cm; together with a quantity of ephemera relating to the artist & his work, including an edition of the National Jewish Monthly, 1941, featuring Flatter on the front cover, & a newspaper article entitled 'Hitler Fears This Artist'. Provenance: The family of the artist, the great uncle of the present vendor. Note: Born in Austria, Joseph Otto Flatter studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Art. In 1934 he married the concert pianist Hilda Lorwa & settled with her in London. His career was interrupted by the outbreak of WWII & for a short time he was mistakenly interned as an "enemy alien". Shortly after his release, Flatter began producing propaganda material for the British and Allied Governments. At the end of the war, he was invited to attended the Nuremberg Trials as an official British War Artist, sketching the accused & later painting a scene of the trial. His work is well represented at the Imperial War Museum in London, & most notably the Kuenstlerhaus in Vienna. Please note that Artist's Resale Rights may apply to this lot.
Joseph Otto Flatter (Austrian/British, 1894-1988):Portrait of the artist's brother, oil on canvas, signed upper left & dated '33, unframed, H 70 x W 58 cm; together with a monochrome study of the sitter's wife, the artist's sister-in-law, H 38 x W 30 cm; & a further monochrome study for The Pilgrim's Progress, H 46 x W 33 cm (3). Follower of Sir Peter Paul Rubens (Flemish, 1577-1640):Portrait of a lady, said to be Susanna Fourment, oil on panel, H 65.5 x W 50.5 cm, contained within an impressive giltwood frame. Note: Susanna Lunden, born Susanna Fourment, was the third daughter of Daniel Fourment, an Antwerp tapestry & silk merchant. Her younger sister Helena became Rubens' second wife in 1630.

PODRECCA'S PICCOLI THEATRE, ITALY (FOUNDED 1914) PORTRAIT MARIONETTE OF ANNA PAVLOVA AS PAPILLON, EARLY 20TH CENTURY painted wood and fabric 42cm x 90cm x 16cm Note: Founded in Rome in 1914 by Vittorio Podrecca (1883-1959), Podrecca's Piccoli Puppet Theatre, in its days, was one of the most innovative marionette theatres in the world. Lawyer, journalist, impresario, publisher and editor of the arts magazine 'Primavera', Podrecca secured the skills of some of the most distinguished artists of the time to create designs for his theatre. His love of opera also attracted numerous major composers to write original music for his productions. In 1922 they went on a worldwide tour which included the London Coliseum. For their performances, Podrecca's Piccoli created portrait marionettes of some of the personalities of the day, including Greta Garbo, Maurice Chevalier, Toscanini, Josephine Baker and also the famous Russian Ballerina Anna Pavlova (1881-1931). Although John Blundall never met Vittorio, he befriended his widow, Lia Podrecca, during one of the company's last tours to the UK in the 1960s. The portrait marionette of Pavlova has been a highly treasured part of Blundall's collection.
