Africa.- Höhnel (Lt. Ludwig von) Discovery of Lakes Rudolf and Stefanie: A Narrative of Count Samuel Teleki's Exploring & Hunting Expedition in Eastern Equatorial Africa in 1887 & 1888, 2 vol., first English edition, half-titles, wood-engraved portrait frontispiece, 3 maps, 2 colour and folding at ends (mounted on new linen stubs), numerous wood-engraved plates and illustrations, old ink & pencil signatures at head of vol.1 title but cut away in vol.2, occasional spotting, Humphrey Winterton's copy with his book-label, original pictorial brown cloth, gilt, uncut and partly unopened, very slightly rubbed at edges, small stain to lower cover of vol. 1, a very good copy, [Czech p.78], 8vo, 1894.
Bosschère (Jean de) Job le Pauvre, number 10 of 50 copies on Simili Japon van Gelder with an additional suite of plates and signed by the author/artist, from an edition limited to 500, this copy one of only 12 with plates hand-coloured by the artist, portrait frontispiece by Wyndham Lewis, text in French and English, 14 wood-engravings in black on coloured papers (purple, blue, orange, red, green), additional suite at end on white paper and hand-coloured by the artist, tissue guards, light offsetting from coloured paper plates, mounted on stubs and bound in black goatskin, by Imogen Whitaker, upper cover with design from one of the plates 'Cesse de te Plaindre ne vous ai-je Inspiré' created with embossing, orange goatskin onlays etc., black and orange torn paper endpapers, uncut, unsigned but with binder's invoice dated 1987 loosely inserted, orange cloth chemise with black goatskin label lettered in gilt on spine, black and orange board & black goatskin slip-case, small 4to, John Lane, 1922.⁂ In his introduction to Putnam's 'The World of Jean Bosschère' (Fortune Press, 1932) Bosschère writes that he considered the text and images in his works to be equally important: "with the same weight of expression; they move together...I have most nearly attained to what I am trying to do in Job Le Pauvre". The translators of the poems include Edith Sitwell, Edward O'Brien, Rebecca West and Aldous Huxley.

(12 1/2 x 10 in), pinholes to corners, light surface dirt, unframed, [1899]; Portrait of Mrs Strang, bust-length looking to her left, graphite on cream machine-made wove paper, with watermark 'C. Volpini', signed lower right, sheet 280 x 205 mm. (11 x 8 1/8 in), some light spotting and surface dirt, unframed [circa 1900].Provenance:Commissioned by Laurence W. Hodson (1864-1933); Thence by descent.⁂ An original detailed receipt of drawings commissioned by Laurence W. Hodson from Strang is included with the lot. Between the years 1896 and 1905 Strang undertook 27 portrait drawings of the Hodsons and their close friends at a cost of £363.
Africa.- Thomson (Joseph) To the Central African Lakes and Back: The Narrative of the Royal Geographical Society's East Central African Expedition, 1878-80, 2 vol., first edition, half-title in vol.1 only (as called for), mounted photographic portrait frontispieces of Keith Johnston and Thomson, 2 folding colour maps, 32pp. publishers' catalogue at end of vol.2, light foxing to frontispieces and titles, first frontispiece creased at corner, maps each with short tear at inner edge (one repaired), original decorated brown cloth, uncut, a little rubbed and marked, spines slightly darkened, traces of labels removed from upper covers, 8vo, 1881. ⁂ Thomson was a Scottish geologist and explorer who accompanied Alexander Keith Johnston on his expedition to establish a route from Dar es Salaam to Lake Nyasa and Lake Tanganyika. Johnston died during the trip and Thomson took over leadership of the expedition, travelling 3,000 miles in 14 months, collecting specimens and making observations. He became the first European to cross the 250 mile plateau between lakes Nyasa and Tanganyika.
Australasia.- Australia.- Hunter (John) An Historical Journal of the Transactions at Port Jackson and Norfolk Island with the Discoveries....in New South Wales and in the Southern Ocean ..., first edition, stipple-engraved portrait after R.Dighton, engraved vignette title and 15 maps and plates, 2 maps folding, list of subscribers, foxing, particularly to portrait and title, bookplate of Rear-Admiral Richard Worsley, contemporary calf, gilt, rubbed, one or two scratches, corners a little worn, rebacked preserving old spine with red roan label, [Ferguson 152; Wantrup 13], 4to, John Stockdale, 1793.⁂ John Hunter served under Arthur Phillip in the first convict fleet and succeeded him as the second Governor of the colony from 1795 to 1799. His journal contains much information on the early settlements of Australia and includes 'View of the Settlement on Sydney Cove, Port Jackson 20th August , 1788', the earliest published representation of Sydney, after a sketch by Hunter, and a plate of a New South Wales family engraved by William Blake after King.

Africa.- Allen (Capt. William) and T.R.H.Thomson. A Narrative of the Expedition...to the River Niger, in 1841, 2 vol., first edition, engraved portrait and 15 plates, one folding, 2 folding engraved maps, one hand-coloured in outline, hand-coloured cross-section, 3 wood-engraved plates and several illustrations, with loosely-inserted 2pp. manuscript notes in contemporary hand from the journal of one on board (short tear to one edge), some light foxing to plates and at beginning and ends, vol.1 lacking front free endpaper, vol.2 upper hinge broken with first few leaves loose, original blind-stamped cloth, rubbed, spines faded, 8vo, 1848.⁂ The notes relate to time spent at the mouth of the River Nun, near Brass Town, and the possibility of trading for palm oil: "18th Augt. 1841 - Today a son of King William who lives at Brass & a son...King Boy of Brass came on board" to deliver two sheep as a present from King Boy and his brother King William. King Boy's message was that "there is plenty of oil at Brass... he is at present making Juju else he would come himself today but he wishes the ship to wait three days...as he is very desirous to talk to the Captain...". The notes continue that King Boy "would rather sell oil than men" and give details of his canoes, trade, feasts (denying that there are any human sacrifices), his son known as "Jack Fire" and that he has 120 wives and King William only 45. A great deal of the information appears in the published work at pp.170-172 although in print Boy has "one hundred and forty wives".

Africa.- Burckhardt (John Lewis) Travels in Nubia, first edition, engraved portrait and 3 engraved maps, 2 folding, advertisement leaf at end, light offsetting to title, maps foxed, slight worming to outer margins towards end, contemporary calf, gilt, rather worn, [cf.Blackmer 238, second edition], 4to, 1819.⁂ Burckhardt travelled from Aleppo to Cairo and then made two journeys, one along the Upper Nile, the other through the Nubian desert.

He was wounded and awarded the Distinguished Service Order at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. After demobilisation in 1919, he taught at the Royal College of Art where he became Professor of Painting between 1923 and 1930 - when he resigned to join the staff of the Slade School of Fine Art. He continued teaching at the Slade until 1958. Unframed and corners are stuck down to paper. Some browning to the paper and one small tear.
§ Alastair Thain, (British, born 1961) Anthony Hopkins and Clint Eastwood, gelatin silver prints, unsigned (2) 55 x 45cm (21 x 18in) Provenance: A gift to the vendor from the artist Other Notes: Alastair Thain is one of the world's most internationally acclaimed photographers, reputed for the originality of his portrait and character photography. He studied at the London College of Printing and his imaginative and often subversive portraits have appeared internationally in publications such as Vogue, The New York Times, Vanity and The Face.
§ Arnold Henry Mason, RA (British, 1885-1963) Study of a girl; and Study of a girl, with a sketch of a woman to the reverse the first signed lower right "A H Mason" pencil and charcoal, unframed, 16 x 12cm and 17 x 12cm (2) Provenance: A gift from the artist to the vendor's grandmother and by descent Other Notes: Arnold Mason studied at the Macclesfield School of Art, the Royal College of Art, London and the Slade School, London in 1918–19. Mason worked in Paris and Rome and in 1906 he was Assistant to Sir William Richmond on the internal decorations of the Old Bailey Courtrooms, London. He served in the Artists' Rifles from 1915–1918, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, from 1919. In the 1930s he had a studio in Chelsea. Best known as a portrait painter in oils and pencil portraits on paper, his work can be seen in the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy in London. Both unframed together with a newspaper cutting of an obituary for Arnold Mason, both have scuffed edges, the second one has folds to the paper.
