HOLMES, OLIVER WENDELL, Jr. A.L.S. , 4pp., 8 vo., from Beverly Farms, Mass., August 6th 1928, with envelope, mentioning Ernest Hemingway and other writers, with portrait phogograph of Holmes in sepia, and bundle of typed transcripts of his letters to Lucy Clifford—HARLAND, HENRY, novelist. Two A.Ls.S., 1904 and n.d., the undated letter inviting Lucy to diner with Henry James – HOWELLS, W.D., novelist, friend of Henry James. Four A.L.s.S., 1904, one describing A Woman Alone as “a most uncommon study in temperaments”. With others from Walter H. Page (U.S. Ambassador). A.L.S., T.L.S. and part T.L.S., and A.L.S. from his wife, Alic 1918, William Lyon Phelps (Professors of English Literature at Yale), Two A.L.s.S., 1912 and 1916. With 3 others, and cut signatures of President Taft and his wife. (20)
BURNE-JONES, Sir EDWARD. (1833-98). Four autograph letters to Lucy Clifford, one signed in full, 1893, 2 signed with initials, n.d. (c. 1895), and one signed with self portrait (envelope postmarked 1895). 11 1/2 pp, 8vo. In the illustrated letter he thanks Lucy for sending him a copy of her book, “In a most unfair way – a most dishonourable way, I looked at the end to see if they married & were happy ever after…” – is it kind though to want to make me weep?”, with an ink drawing of a fat-cheeked baby in profile. With an A.L.S. from Sir Philip Burne-Jones, 1897, illustrated with self portrait at the easel, and two A.Ls.S. from Lady (Georgina) Burne-Jones, 1898 and 1905.
CLIFFORD, Mrs. LUCY (1846-1929). A large collection of typescripts, mostly of unpublished plats; other printed editions of plays, and some short stoires; manuscript workbooks, engagement diaries and some correspondence regarding her work for the theatre; reviews and press cuttings etc. With six portrait photographs, including one bt Mayall; and 54 cashed cheques signed by W.K. Clifford (1869-70) (a quantity)
HEWLETT, MAURICE (1861-1923). 12 A.Ls.S., to Lucy Clifford, approx 40 pp., 4to., Broadchalke etc. An affectionate and grateful series, addressed to “My Dear Friend”, from an author whose work, The Forest Lovers, she persuaded Macmillans to publish in 1898. With 2 A.Ls.S. from his widow, 1923 and 1926 – MORGAN, CHARLES (1894-1958). Six A.Ls.S. to Lucy Clifford, 20 pp., 4to., and 8vo., 1928, from More’s Garden Cheyne Walk, and France. Concerning the publication of Portrait in a Mirror which he sent to Lucy to read after it had been turned down by Heinemann, “you are the perfect critic for my book”. Again Lucy persuaded Sir Frederick Macmillan to read it himself, and the novel became a bestseller for the firm. (18)

(5) Of the original committee who set the scheme in motion to celebrate Henry James’s 70th birthday, Lucy Clifford’s name appears second, after J.M. Barrie, with Edmund Gosse, Edith Wharton and six others.

One page, 8vo., Aug. 11 1891 (2) giving her permission to dispose of the manuscript of Without Benefit of Clergy, and accepting the portrait of himself by John Collier inexchange. 2pp., 8vo., from The Athenaeum, Dec. 15 1911 (3) to Margaret Clifford, from Embankment Chambers, 22 Dec. 1899, 3pp. 8vo., commiserating with her for having measles etc. (4) to Lady Dilke (Ethel Dilke) replying to her enquiry as to the suitability of the South African climate for her son’s health. Bateman’s, Sept. 23 1933. 2pp., 8vo., with envelope. Also included is a folded sheet with two Kipling signatures; and an A.L.S from Amy Lowell, Sevenels, Brookline, 4pp., 8vo., December 29th 1911, expressing delight in the ms. of The Light That Failed, which she had bought for her collection. With two TLs.S. from the American bookseller Alwin J. Scheuer. M. Chisholm devotes a chapter in Such Silver Currents to Lucy’s relationship with Kipling, and quotes items 1 – 3 in full. (8)
