*Alfonso XIII (1886-1941, King of Spain). Signed photograph, 1926, three-quarter length portrait of the seated King in uniform, gelatin silver print, 21 x 16cm, original mount of Kavlak, Madrid, with printed credit lower right, signed and inscribed on the mount in bold black ink to French entertainer Maurice Chevalier and dated 1926, faint and barely perceptible horizontal crease, some toning to mount In 1911, the young Chevalier began a relationship with Mistinguett at the Folies Bergere, where he was her 23-year-old dance partner. He was drafted into the army during World War I and captured by Germany as a prisoner of war. He spent two years in a German prison camp before King Alfonso XIII, an admirer of Mistinguett, intervened to free him through a ruse. Alfonso was the only king of a neutral country who was related to both the British and German royal families, and was able to set up an exchange of captured German and French ambulance workers. Chevalier, posing as an ambulance worker, was freed. (1)

A Wedgwood and Bentley blue and white jasper portrait medallion of Carolus Linnaeus circa 1775-80, modelled by John Flaxman, oval, 6.2cm high Linnaeus famously introduced a system of classifying plants. In 1775, a bill was submitted by John Flaxman to Wedgwood for 'Moulding and making a cast from a Medal of Lennaeus Mending a wax medal and making a Mould from it'. The wax medal was probably an original by Inlander, modelled in 1773.
