He was the son of John Hardy and his wife, Isabelle Gathorne of Kirby, Lonsdale. The sitter’s brother was created the 1st Earl of Cranbrook. Hardy was elected to the House of Commons for Midhurst in March 1859, but held the seat for less than two months. The following year he was returned for Dartmouth, a constituency he represented until 1868, and then sat for Warwickshire South from 1868 to 1874. On 23 February 1876 he was created a Baronet, of Dunstall Hall in the County of Stafford. In 1878 he was appointed High Sheriff of Staffordshire. Sir Francis Grant’s “Sitters’ Book”, preserved today in the National Portrait Gallery, records Hardy sitting in 1857. Hardy died in July 1888, aged 79.Condition report: Oil on canvas which is unlined. There are several patches on the reverse of the painting mending old damages which have been retouched from the front. The paint layer has numerous areas of raised and flaking paint with scattered losses to the original material. The varnish is yellowed and there is a layer of dust on the surface. The gilding on the frame has suffered and is flaking with numerous losses.

Basset was baptized at Charlbury, Oxfordshire on 7 September 1757 and was educated at Harrow School (1770–71), Eton College (1771–74) and King's College, Cambridge (1775). In 1777 he left university early to perform a Grand Tour in Italy, with Rev. William Sandys acting as his Cicerone. In Rome he had his portrait painted by Pompeo Batoni, who did not finish it until after Basset's departure. It was despatched to England on board the Westmorland , which was seized by the French and sold to the Spanish. Two portraits of him by Batoni are today in the collections of the Prado and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Madrid.Condition report: Lined. Old labels to the reverse. Dirty, yellowed varnish. Paint layer stable. Prominent craquelure in the sky area. Few discoloured retouchings top right corner. Areas of thick layers of old varnish and overpaint, especially in the sky, which appear thick and pasty. Thinner overpaint in other areas appears to have darkened. Cleaning would be recommended.

A tall and impressive Martin Brothers stoneware gourd vase by Edwin and Walter Martin, dated 1905 shouldered form, modelled in relief, with incised veins, glazed blue and green on a tan ground, incised 2 1905 Martin Bros London & Southall, 22cm. high Provenance Charles de Grunchy. De Grunchy was one time architect master at the Royal Academy Schools and is listed as a patron on the Martin Brothers. He loaned pots (probably gourds) to the Fulham exhibition of pots and prints, 1929. John Radcliffe Exhibited Gorgeously Grotesque, Worthing Museum and Art Gallery, 2003, catalogue no. 9.
