Linda Hall, ‘Out of this World’, 22. Hevelius’s ‘Prodromus astonomiae exhibens fundamenta..’ was a monumental atlas in which 1,564 stars were all catalogued and arranged alphabetically under the name of the constellation and how bright each star shone within that particular constellation; he also noted the stars longitude and latitude. Hevelius’s research and rigorous scientific approach resulted in the discovery of eleven completely new constellations. Hevelius also approached the mapping of the stars from a new prospective, in that he showed them as if you were viewing them from space rather than from the earth. Such brilliance was much copied and plaguerised, but these original Hevelius star charts remain one of the landmarks in celestial cartography. (1)
