Circle of Sir Peter Lely, (1618-1680), a 17th century portrait of Lady Anne Keith, unsigned, with dedication, oil on canvas, 70 x 57 cm, gilt frame. Inscribed top left hand corner "Lady Anne Keith, daughter of George 5th Earl of Marischal, married William 8th Earl of Morton, K.G. Lord High Treasurer, died, 1648". Anne Keith (1586 - 1648, Kirkwell, Orkney). She married William Douglas, 7th (or 8th) Earl of Morton on 28 March 1604 when she was 18. The Keith (Morton) and Douglas (Marischal) families had very strong inter related ties throughout the generations. William Douglas was Lord High Treasurer of Scotland (1630 - 1636) and a zealous Royalist, who, on the outbreak of the Great Rebellion in 1642, provided £100,000 for the cause. At this time there was much upheaval in England, Scotland and Ireland with the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, sometimes known as the British Civil Wars, when an intertwined series of conflicts took place in the kingdoms between 1639 and 1651. In Scotland itself, from 1644 - 45 a Scottish Civil War was fought between Scottish Royalists, supporters of Charles I under James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose, and the Covenanters, who had controlled Scotland since 1639 and allied with the English Parliament. The Scottish Royalists, aided by Irish troops, had a rapid series of victories in 1644 - 45, but were eventually defeated by the Covenanters. The Covenanters then found themselves at odds with the English Parliament, so they crowned Charles II at Scone and thus stated their intention to place him on the thrones of England and Ireland as well. This led to the Third English Civil War, when Scotland was invaded and occupied by the Parliamentarian New Model Army under Oliver Cromwell. William was granted of the Islands of Orkney and Zetland (Shetland) by Charles II in 1632, which were later annexed to the Commonwealth in 1657. Her father, George Keith, was one of the most important and powerful men of his day in Scotland, he was sent as ambassador to Denmark in 1589 to negotiate the marriage of King James VI of Scotland to Anne of Denmark. Little is known of Anne's personal life but she bore ten children, Lady Margaret Douglas (1610-1678), married the 1st Marquess of Argyll, Lady Anne Douglas (d. 1667), married the 2nd Earl of Kinnoull, Robert Douglas, 8th Earl of Morton (d. 1649), Lady Mary Douglas, married the 2nd Earl of Dunfermline, James Douglas, 10th Earl of Morton (d. 1686), Lady Isabel Douglas (d. 1650), married the 2nd Marquess of Montrose, Nicholas Douglas (d. 1686), Jean Douglas and Agnes Douglas. With thanks to Lucy Gibbon, Orkney Library & Archive Service.
Attributed to Frederick William Elwell (1870-1958), Portrait of J. A. Wade, unsigned, oil on canvas, 60 x 50 cm, gilt frame. Joseph Armitage Wade (1820 - 1893), was the self styled King of Hornsea. He was a successful Hull timber merchant and Hornsea resident, Wade's brickworks were established c.1865, he was instrumental in the building of the Hull and Hornsea Railway, 1862 -1864, a gas works in 1864, and between 1878 and 1880 a 1,072 feet pier was constructed - it was damaged within a year after a ship collided with it during a storm, shortening it by 300 feet. In 1897 the pier was sold for demolition. Elwell began his portrait career c.1890 and this would put this painting as one of his earliest works as Wade died in 1893. The cataloguer cannot find any reference to this portrait online but it has all of Elwell's characteristics of a high quality face and a dark background.
Fred Elwell (1870 - 1958), "Robert Henry Micks portrait", oil on canvas, signed lower left hand corner, 124 x 99 cm, gilt frame ARR. Provenance; property of the Hull Corn Trade Guild. Robert Henry Micks J.P. (1859 - 1934) was born in Waterford, Co. Cork, Ireland and by 1871 (he was 12) was living in Hull, he later became a corn merchant setting up the firm of Micks, Lambert & Co. in the High Street by the river Hull; they were one of the founding firms of the Hull corn trade. By 1901, already successful he lived in Hotham House, Hotham. In 1898 the Hull Corn Trade Guild was established as a society to look after the needs of members who had fallen on hard times by the Hull Corn Trade Association Ltd and in 1899 the Pacific was built with a vast trading floor and with offices and the gentleman's club above; this was called the Pacific Club. In 1906 Henry Micks was elected Chairman to the Hull Corn Trade Guild and held the post until his death in 1934. In 1928 Mr Johnson of the Hull Corn Guild commissioned Fred Elwell to paint this portrait in gratitude for his dedicated, long-standing service to the Guild. Thereafter it hung in the boardroom. He is shown seated in the Chairman's distinctive carved chair by a window in the boardroom; interestingly this chair was made to match a set of five Charles II chairs that were used in the boardroom and were sold in the Hotham Hall auction of Hicks possessions on his death in 1934. From 1972 until 2005 they were on display in the Wilberforce Museum and are now in a private collection in the West Country. In 1972 Johnson bequeathed the painting to the Guild; in 1992 they had the painting cleaned, revarnished and relined by James Starkey, art dealer, of Beverley; in 1993 it was loaned to the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull for the "A Life in Art" exhibition and is illustrated in Wendy Loncaster's accompanying book; between 2007 and 2013 it was on loan to the Beverley Art Gallery. In Lancaster's book she writes "There is an arresting presence in this portrait, enhanced by the challenging gaze of the subject. Henry Micks is depicted with convincing likeness, particularly in the anatomical accuracy of the hands. The detailed depiction of the metal-framed window and the carving on the chair alludes to his existence in a real and solid world."
