SCHMIDT JOSEF: (1904-1942) Austro-Hungarian Tenor. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph, a close-up portrait of Schmidt. Signed in dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image and dated 11th November 1933 in his hand. Together with an unsigned vintage sepia postcard photograph of Schmidt standing in a full length pose opposite Otto Wallburg in a scene from Pagliacci. Rare. NUREYEV RUDOLF: (1938-1993) Russian Ballet Dancer. Programme signed, the printed 8vo programme for the Nureyev Festival at the London Coliseum, 1st June-3rd July 1982, signed (`Rudolf Nureyev`) in blue ink with his name alone to an inside photo page, a close-up portrait of the dancer. Together with a small selection of signed First Day Covers, signed postcard photographs etc., by various entertainers etc., including Luciano Pavarotti, Howard Keel, Gracie Fields etc. VG, 7
[DILLINGER JOHN]: (1903-1934) American Bank Robber. An original printed folio Wanted poster issued by J. Edgar Hoover and the United States Department of Justice, Washington D.C., 23rd June 1934. The poster features a portrait of Dillinger and offers a reward of $10,000 for his capture or $5,000 for information leading to his arrest. A description of the criminal is provided including details of his scars. Some overall staining and age wear and a few small tears at the edges. FR

WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. Two A.Ls.S., The Duke of Wellington, in the third person, each one page, 8vo, London, 19th June and 27th July 1819, to [George] Hayter (1792-1871, English Painter). Both letters express Wellington`s concern that he was unavailable to sit for his portrait and offering to arrange other convenient times, `The Duke will call upon Mr. Hayter & fix another time for sitting for the picture`. Also including an autograph envelope signed, with his initial W, addressed in Wellington`s hand to Sir George Hayter and marked Immediate. With red wax seal to verso and date, July 1842, in another hand. The letters very slightly irregularly trimmed to the left edges, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG, 3
TROTSKY LEON: (1879-1940) Bolshevik Revolutionary, one of the leaders of the Russian October Revolution. Vintage signed 4.5 x 6.5 photograph of Trotsky in a semi-profile head and shoulders pose. Signed (`Leon Trotsky`) in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area at the base of the image. The signature is a little light in places, although remains perfectly legible. Extensive, heavy scuffing to the upper half of the image, largely making Trotsky`s portrait unrecognisable. About FR
JOHNSON AMY: (1903-1941) English Pioneer Aviatrix & MOLLISON JAMES (1905-1959) Scottish Pioneer Aviator. A good pair of signed postcard photographs by both Johnson and Mollison individually, Johnson`s image depicting her flying over Croydon in The Desert Cloud on her arrival from South Africa. With an inset head and shoulders portrait. Signed (`Amy Mollison`) in bold dark fountain pen ink with her name alone to a light area of the image. Mollison`s image depicts the pilot flying The Hearts Content and also features an inset head and shoulders portrait. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. A very fine, large signed colour 14.5 x 21 print, being an attractive reproduction of the painting entitled Profile for Victory (1942) by artist A. Egerton Cooper, depicting Churchill seated in a half length pose, in profile, holding a large lit cigar in one hand. Signed (`Winston S. Churchill`) in bold fountain pen ink and dated 1949 in his hand to the lower white border which also features a printed calligraphic caption. Neatly mounted and professionally matted in blue to an overall size of 20 x 27. An appealing signed image of Churchill featuring an excellent signature. Rare in this form. VG Alfred Egerton Cooper (1883-1974) was one of Churchill`s favourite portrait painters. Profile for Victory was considered by Cooper to be his finest work and was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1943. It was later published as a morale-boosting poster for the general public.
STEPTOE AND SON: Wilfrid Brambell (1912-1985) Irish Actor, played Albert Steptoe. Vintage signed and inscribed 4.5 x 7 photograph, a head and shoulders portrait of Brambell. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink, largely across a clear area at the base of the image; Harry H. Corbett (1925-1982) English Actor, played Harold Steptoe. Vintage signed 7.5 x 6.5 photograph of Corbett standing in a three quarter length pose, alongside Wilfrid Brambell, in costume as Harold and Albert Steptoe in a scene from an episode of the sitcom entitled The Bird (1962). Signed by Corbett in blue ink to a clear area of the background at the head of the image. Two words (`get well!`) have been partially, neatly erased beneath the signature. G to VG, 2
RAINS CLAUDE: (1889-1967) English Actor, starred in Casablanca (1942) as Captain Louis Renault. Vintage signed and inscribed 7.5 x 10 photograph of Rains in a head and shoulders pose. The publicity portrait for The Passionate Friends is signed by the actor in blue ink to the lower white border. Some slight creasing to the lower edge, only just touching a small part of the signature. Together with S. Z. PETER TURNERELLI (1775-1839) "George IV with Order of the Garter badge", a bust length portrait study, white marble on a turned socle, inscribed verso "P. Turnerelli Fecit", 43.5 cm high (Provenance: by family repute a gift from George IV to The First Lord Melville, Henry Dundas, First Viscount Melville) (Peter Turnerelli-Irish sculptor of Italian origin, studied under Peter Francis Chenu. From 1797 to 1800 he taught modelling to the daughters of George III and was subsequently Sculptor-in-Ordinary to the Royal Family. Other works include George III-1810 Windsor Castle, Duke of Wellington 1815 India Office, Louis XVIII 1816). (ILLUSTRATED)
(Raymond Botanist and Artist 1923-2007) A Collec (Raymond Botanist and Artist 1923-2007) A Collection of Watercolours of Irish Orchids 10 watercolours c.300mm x 450mm on thin card 6 on white card 4 on pale grey (these mounted on thicker board) fine spacious portraits in bright colours with botanical details and long captions in pencil 1965-70. *** “Renowned as a portrait painter but will be most remembered for his botanical paintings...he became fascinated with Ireland`s wild flowers especially orchids. Over the next four decades (c.1965-2005) he studied and drew the various species.” Paul Clements Guardian Obit. Although a single plate was published by the Curwen Press in 1975 and Piper`s Flowers 1987 includes 5 orchid plates the great book on Irish orchids which he meditated never became possible. His magnificent series of watercolours was purchased not long before his death by Queen`s University Belfast; and there are a few framed in Gregan`s Castle Hotel in the Burren; the present selection presents an unusual opportunity.(10)
