A 19th century tortoiseshell and ivory portrait miniature or jewellery case, of rectangular form and with red velvet lined interior, 10cm x 8.5cm CONDITION REPORT: Trevanion & Dean does not ship items containing ivory or tortoiseshell outside the EU. The government have proposed legislation to create a UK law to ban the sale of all ivory which sources suggest will come into effect in June 2019. Please note this means that this lot is legal to sell now but may not be in the future.

LOCKE (J), AN ESSAY CONCERNING HUMAN UNDERSTANDING, 4th edition, engraved portrait frontis, full mottled tan calf, London, Awnsham and John Churchil, 1700 (worm damage to margin of pages); CASAUBON (M), RELATION FOR WHAT PASSED FOR MANY YEARS BETWEEN DR JOHN DEE, defective copy with facsimile pages, double page plate, 1659; MEMOIRS CONTAINING A GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE ANCIENT AND HONOURABLE HOUSE OF STANLEY, re-bound, Manchester, 1783 (3) (AT FAULT) CONDITION REPORT: Dr Dee has a later binding and end papers. The title page is hand written, the first two pages of the preface are facsimile copies. There appears to be a plate lacking. Several pages have tabs at the edge to support tears or weak areas. B of preface torn. Pagination error pp104-109 - but the call word matches. Pagination error also at 256 reverting to 253 and again at 417 as page 421. Pagination ends at 448 and begins again with page 1 at the Actio Tertia to page 46. The latter pagest are in poor condition. Pages browned and with foxing. (AS FOUND)
Attributed to John Thomas Peele (1822-1897) British,Oil on canvas, Portrait of a young girl flower picking in woodland setting, Signed and dated '1881' lower left, 60cm x 45cm, Gilt framed CONDITION REPORT: The signature is a little unclear but it does appear to be Peele as opposed to Poole - it seems that the name plate on the frame has been altered to Poole. The canvas has been relined and there is a craquelure to the painting throughout. A little grubby and with some small repairs to the painted surface on the right hand side - see additional images. Frame grubby and with many losses to the gilt detailing. Grubby verso.
Circle of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723)Oil on canvas, Portrait - possibly John Kyrle (1637-1724), 74.5cm x 62.5cm, Re-lined in gilt wood and gesso frameNote: John Kyrle was an English philanthropist known as "The Man of Ross",Provenance: Yeaton Peverey Hall CONDITION REPORT: The painting has been relined and heavily re-varnished. The edge of the original canvas can be seen at the top of the portrait and the later paper lining can be seen to the left hand side. There has possibly been some paint restoration to the cheeks and chin of the sitter and a small part of the forehead. An old craqueleur can be seen in areas under the varnish. The stretchers and frame are not original. There is a small raised area to the bottom right corner and the varnish is not as shiny here. Some other blemishes within the darker areas. Please see additional images. Because of the age and nature of this painting there may be other issues which may not be immediately apparent / detected. Viewing in person recommended by perspective buyers or agents.
Studio of Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723), Oil on canvas, Portrait of Prince William - Duke of Gloucester (1689-1700)Unsigned, 128.5cm x 103cm,Relined, In giltwood and gesso frame Ex: Sotheby's Onians Collection 18th & 19th October 1995, Lot 202 Prince William was the eldest son of Queen Anne and Prince George. He was the last in line of the House of Stuart, member of The Order of the Garter and John Churchill The Duke of Marlborough was his governor. Sadly, he died at the age of eleven. Provenance: Yeaton Peverey Hall CONDITION REPORT: The canvas has been re-lined - the edges of this can be seen at some edges of the image. There is a one inch square (approx) repair to the sky at the top right corner. There is a smaller repair to the top middle in the dark area of the canvas. There is a zig-sag shaped repair (23cm approx) to the folds of the skirt. There is a 3cm (approx) vertical repair above one foot. There is a vertical raised line visible running from the dark background to the left of the face down to the bottom of the canvas. There are other 'bumpy' areas to the background around the face. There may be a small repair to the painted surface on the tip of the sitters nose. A craquelure throughout and a later varnish. When viewing the canvas from the back it is possible to see old water marks - these correspond with some of the condition issues on the front. Attention will be needed. Frame is nor original. Despite faults overall appearance ok. Because of the age and nature of this painting there may be other issues which may not be immediately apparent / detected. Italian School - late 16th century, Oil on canvas, Portrait of a gentleman - inscribed 'Anno Dni MDLXVII Benedictus Flor Ann Aetat XXXV', and with coat of arms, 83.5cm x 65cm, In later gilt frameEx: Sotheby's Onians Collection 18th & 19th October 1995, lot 180Provenance: Yeaton Peverey Hall CONDITION REPORT: The frame is not original and the canvas has been re-lined, the stretchers may also not be original but they have been with the canvas for some tie as there are old auction chalk and stencil numbers and details verso. The painting has undergone much restoration in its life. There are some areas of repair painting to the forehead and other parts of the face. There is an old blister to the paint to the left hand side of the head. There is a replaced section of canvas running along the top edge of the portrait, about 2cm deep. There is a raised area to the canvas to the right hand side of the head and also to the chest area. There is a line which runs let to right through the eyes of the sitter, perhaps the canvas was rolled up at some time in its history. There is some glossy varnish? to the bottom corners of the canvas. Some white blooming spots here and there to the lower section. There may be other historical condition issues under the later varnish. Despite faults overall appearance ok.

Provenance: Yeaton Peverey Hall. Purchased at Halls auctioneers in the 1990's. CONDITION REPORT: This painting is considered to be the Studio of St Peter Lely and was purchased as so in the 1990's. The portrait is contemporary to the artist. A highly similar painting of the Countess of Orrery was sold at Sotheby's Old Masters Auction 7th December 2017, Lot 160. The painting has been re-lined. There may be a line of old paint restoration to the forehead of the sitter. This showed up when using a UV light. There are areas of craqueleur throughout. The edge of the old canvas can be seen at the top. The frame may not be original. There is an old auction house stencil number to the verso and pencil notes stating that it was 'No 21' and possibly for 'The Square Drawing Room'. Overall the picture is of a good appearance. It is quite pronounced to the top right corner where the colour appears slightly paler because of this. There is a degraded patch to the dark area of paint on the right hand side edge about two thirds up. There is a patch of vertical paint to the left shoulder of the sitter where the paint has lifted. Lightly grubby with some spot marks to the surface. The back of the frame is grubby - the frame may not be original to the canvas. Frame with general light age wear. The edging to the back of the mount planks appears lighter and later in appearance. Please see additional images. It may be re-lined.
