The surface of the painting exhibits Craquelere, crazing and cracking etc., the rear of the painting shows a small repair to the right hand side (see images).

BIRDWOOD, Herbert M., the full-leather 1858 handwritten diary of the final year Cambridge undergraduate, Herbert Mills Birdwood, inscribed with the diarist's name and 'Pet. Coll. Cambridge'. The diary, which begins in the new year and ends on December 16th, records his final year at home before embarking for India where he was to lead a long and illustrious Civil Service career. Many interesting entries, including Wednesday, April 21st (page 92) which has a drawing of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's soon-to-be-completed Royal Albert Bridge. The entry for the day, which precedes the illustration reads: "Went to Plymouth by the 9.40 train. First to the Naval Bank and drew £10 . Then by omnibus to North Corus, thence by steamer to Saltash to see Mr Brunel's railway bridge. This consists of two tubes which are the arks of a circle and support the roadway thus:" The text continues belowthe drawing: "Only one tube was up. The roadway will be 100 feet above highwater - the span is 240 feet. Saw hulks and funboats in the anchorage, also the 'King William' and the American ship, 'Niagara', which with the 'Agamemnon', is going to lay down the Atlantic cable... walked to Plymouth along the canal to see the new viaducts which are building for the Tavistock Line."; "HEYWOOD'S AUTHENTIC SERIES OF PRESS BIOGRAPHIES - Mr. H.
