EARLY 17TH CENTURY SPANISH SCHOOL WITH POSSIBLE ATTRIBUTION TO SOFONISBA ANGUISCIOLA; a large oil on board, portrait of a lady in black dress with white lace collar and cuffs, a white veil over her head and holding a handkerchief in her right hand, unsigned, 98 x 68cm. This lot is accompanied by various correspondences from the previous vendor and the National Portrait Gallery (August 1961), various other correspondences including E & J Tawil, City of Manchester Art Galleries, etc, also information regarding the restoration undertaken in April 2008 by Gillian MH Walker.Additional InformationWhen inspected under UV light there is evidence of extensive retouching throughout the picture, particularly to the face and hands, but is does persist throughout the picture where old splits to the panel have been gone over, the original panel is obviously covered up by a modern board which we have not removed, but the evidence is clear of numerous splits to this original panel, craquelure throughout. There is a chip to the lower right of the painting and indeed appears to be a section of the original, although we cannot confirm this. Splits, chips and losses to the frame.
A good Regency satinwood and painted bookcase on cupboard, the moulded pediment above two glazed doors, each centred with an oval portrait medallion above a base with painted top centred with a Classical roundel, two swag adorned drawers and two cupboard doors, both set with large oval panels painted with Classical scenes and raised on turned gilt feet, height 184, width 99cm, depth 35cm.Provenance: From a private Worcestershire collection.Additional InformationThis piece was purchased from Spadesbourne Antiques in 1975 and prior to purchase, it has clearly had some restoration work, noticeably to the gilding throughout, the applied mouldings to the glazed doors. It now has later simple glass shelves to the interior. The vertical gilt return bar which sits between the two cupboard doors is a replacement. General surface scratches, however overall the piece remains in good condition and is of a good colour, bar some old repairs and re-gilding.

Sliman MANSOUR (Bir Zeit 1947)My Grandchildern, 2013Huile sur toile 120 x 96 cm Signé en arabe "Sliman Mansour" et en anglais "Sliman Mansour 2013" en bas à gauche. Provenance : C ollection particulière à Jérusalem (acquis directement auprès de l'artiste). Ce lot est présenté en importation temporaire. Le présent ouvrage intitulé « My Grandchildern » est une Å“uvre importante dans la carrière de l’artiste. Représentant deux enfant qui jouent à la balançoire, suspendus dans l’air et dans le temps. Dans cette toile, l’artiste décide délibérément de ne pas mettre l’accent sur l’identité visuelle des protagonistes. Le titre, nous indique cependant qu’il s’agit de ses petits-enfants, qu’il emmenait jouer au parc à Jerusalem. Cette scène, censée représenter la joie, offre des visages figés, suspendu, comme dans l’attente ! elle nous invite au rêve, seul échappatoire de ses enfants ; la liberté qu’ils cherchent depuis toujours, dans une attente suspendue. *** Parmi les artistes palestiniens les plus reconnus et les plus distingués, Sliman Mansour, connu surtout pour son Å“uvre de 1973 "Camel of Hardship" représentant un vieux porteur portant Jérusalem sur son dos. Né à Birzeit, Mansour a étudié aux beaux-arts à la Bezalel Art Academy à Jérusalem. Il est maintenant considéré comme un leader culturel clé en Palestine. Mansour a largement contribué au développement d'une infrastructure pour les beaux-arts en Cisjordanie. Il a été à la tête de la Ligue des artistes palestiniens de 1986 à 1990 tout en dirigeant le collectif New Visions après la première Intifada. En 1994, Mansour a cofondé le centre d'art al-Wasiti à Jérusalem-Est et en a été le directeur de 1995 jusqu’à sa fermeture en 1996. Le travail de Sliman Mansour se base sur l'histoire sociale palestinienne. Loin d’une image idéalisée ses représentations de la nation. Evoquent un temps perdu où l’identité de l’individu était façonnée dans un cadre stable et pacifique. Pour Mansour, l'art contribue à la continuation et à la renaissance de l'identité palestinienne. Par intermittence, tout au long de sa carrière, il s’attache au portrait en reproduisant, le plus souvent, des membres de sa famille. Ces représentations se font souvent dans une posture de repos. Pendant qu'ils se reposent dans leurs chaises, l'artiste capture des détails intimes de ses sujets, créant un album de famille distinct d'individus. Dans sa démarche, l'artiste puise également ses sujets d'anciennes photographies de famille, revisitant les relations avec les individus disparus. Donnant à ses Å“uvres un caractère nostalgique. Mounted to board, sitters' names and annotated Narrenball 1853 im Odeon in ink below the images on the mount.The portrayed participants of this artists' ball in Munich are Füssli, Thomberg, Dr. v. Wenzel, Liersen and C. Freiherr v. Seckendorf. The society was named after the Munich artists' club Stubenvoll, where it was founded in 1844. In this same year Friedrich Wilhelm Schoen painted a 50 figure portrait of the group which is now in the collection of the Münchner Stadtmuseum. Each mounted to gilt-edged album page (slightly soiled, light foxing) and with gilt decorative frame line, bound in contemporary red velvet and gilt-stamped album (some scuff marks, lower corners slightly bumped).This very richly decorated commemorative album for "Dr. W. Hertzberg, Director der höheren Bürgerschule in Elbing", with a handwritten and drawn title page, contains a collection of intriguing portraits of teachers. There is also a very rare view of Elbing at the front, probably one of the earliest known views of this town. – Some with slight fading in edges, otherwise most with rich tones and in very good condition.

Feininger, Lore -- Portrait of an unidentified dancer. Late1920s. Vintage gelatin silver print. 17 x 12.5 cm. Photographer's stamp and annotated in pencil on the verso. The German portrait and architectural photographer Lore Feininger was the first daughter of the German-American painter Lyonel Feininger. In 1918, Lore Feininger began studying painting at the University for Fine Arts in Berlin. She then apprenticed with the portrait photographer Suse Byk, a family friend in Berlin. After three years of training, she worked in the studio of the fashion and portrait photographer Karl Schenker until 1924. In 1927, she opened her own photo studio for portrait, architectural, and object photography. During this time, she made numerous portrait photographs of artists. Lore Feininger was bombed out twice in Berlin, and her photo lab and negative archive were completely destroyed in 1943. Photographs by Lore Feininger are in the collection of numerous museums, including the Museum Folkwang and the Museum of Modern Art. – Small loss of emulsion in right edge, otherwise a fine tonal print in very good condition.
