Catherine appointed a commission consisting of representatives from all ranks and provinces to create a new code of law in Moscow, which was dismissed without success in 1768. The present instruction for the commission reflected some progressive ideas adapted from the texts of Montesquieu and Beccaria. Library Hub lists only one copy in the UK (National Library of Scotland).

Matthieu (Pierre) The Heroyk Life and Deplorable Death of the Most Christian King Henry the Fourth, translated by Edward Grimeston, 2 parts in 1, first edition in English, woodcut initials and headpieces, woodcut portrait to A4 verso, a few rust-spots (one causing small hole with loss of a letter to 2P1), title and final leaf lightly soiled but generally a good clean copy, modern half blue morocco, slightly rubbed and faded, [STC 17661], small 4to, by George Eld, 1612.⁂ Matthieu (1563-1621) became the semi-official historian to the court of Henry IV of France and enjoyed special access to the king.

Koran; commonly called The Alcoran of Mahomet (The), engraved portrait frontispiece, bookplate of Drayton-Grimké family to pastedown with ex-libris stamp to endpapers, lightly browned throughout, later cloth, faded, 8vo, 1824.⁂ Interesting provenance from the library of the Magnolia Plantation in South Carolina, USA. Upon his death in 1825, Thomas Drayton, the great grandson of Magnolia's first Drayton, willed the estate successively to his daughter's sons, Thomas and John Grimké. As he had no male heirs to leave it to, he made the condition in the will that they assume their mother's maiden name of Drayton. A stamp on the front endpaper reads "This book is part of the old Grimke and Drayton library at South Bay House So. Ca. which was sent over to Golborne Hall, Lancashire, England in Autumn 1889."

NO RESERVE Theatre.- Reynolds (Sir Joshua), After. Portrait of David Garrick (1717-1779), "The Prologue Portrait", oil on canvas, 300 x 260 mm (11 3/4 x 10 1/4 in), craquelure and rubbing, areas of restoration visible to face and hair, framed, [circa 1800].⁂ Several versions, as well as copies by other artists, of the present portrait are known. It shows Garrick composing a prologue to be delivered at the start of a performance. The original painting was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1776, and is now held at Knole House, part of the National Trust Collection.

Manner of David BombergPortrait of a woman oil on board 66 x 53cmCondition report: Oil on hardboard. There is some water staining at the lower edge of the board at the reverse, but overall it is sound and in plane. The paint layer is thinly applied with a matte surface. There are a few scuffs and scratches to the surface. In some areas brown spots are visible across the surface and there is a general layer of dust across the work. The canvas surface of the frame is stained and dirty and there is abrasion to the white painted finish.
