Inscribed '...Leopold of Saxe Coburg' to verso, in circular brass frame, maximum height 7cm, together with two Wedgwood oval jasperware plaques, 'George Washington' and 'The Duke of Connaught', 20cm and 14cm high respectively, together with an assortment of profile portrait roundels in various media, in one tray.Provenance: The personal collection of Peter Hone. The Wedgwood Washington bicentenary plaque has a chip on the reverse and two hairline cracks to the left of the bust. The Wedgwood Duke of Connaught has a small edge chip and some deep crazing. The remaining pieces have a few marks, and the metal pieces display some verdigris.

Image size 41.5cm x 25.5cm"Harold Riley, 1934-2023, sold his first painting to the Salford Museum and Art Gallery when he was just 11 years old. He won a scholarship to Slade, a travel scholarship to Italy and a British Council scholarship to study art in Spain. After his National Service, his returned to his beloved Salford where he stayed and worked for the rest of his life. He was great friends with the reknowned writer Shelagh Delaney - A Taste of Honey; Dance With a Stranger - of whom he did a portrait and to whom, he gifted many of his paintings. The two oils in this auction represent a Salford of their childhood, the Salford that would inspire their work. In 2014 he unveiled the plaque on the childhood council home of Shelagh Delaney. Their friendship lasted a lifetime." "She was one of the people in my life that I loved very much. We first got to know each other at school. We were, as they say in Salford, ‘going out together’." This painting has come from the family of Shelagh Delaney.

The frame does have cracks in the corners, watermarks and knocks and scuffs all over through age and use/storage.

* JOHN BYRNE RSA (SCOTTISH 1940 - 2023) BIG SELFIE offset lithograph on paperframed and under glassimage size 35cm x 27cm, overall size 50cm x 42cm Note: John Byrne studied at both Edinburgh and Glasgow Schools of Art in the late 50s and early 60s. A superb painter and draughtsman, the multi-talented Byrne was also a first-class playwright (‘The Slab Boys’, ‘Tutti Frutti’), his ear for dialogue was as acute (and witty) as his eye for detail. Much of his subject matter in both disciplines is overtly autobiographical, he often included or refers to the Teddy Boy/Rock and Roll era of his youth. Byrne designed record covers for Donovan, The Beatles, Gerry Rafferty and Billy Connolly. His work is held in major collections in Scotland and abroad. Several of his paintings hang in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh, the Museum of Modern Art and the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. At the time of writing, The Fine Art Society, Edinburgh is staging "John Byrne: In The Studio" (until 23rd December).
