A mid-19th century scrap album, most likely made up by Alfred Swaine Taylor's daughter Edith when she was still a child. This was rescued in an extremely damp, mildewed condition, and has dried gently at room temperature, which has resulted in some items becoming loose in the album and some remaining fixed. Still fixed on a page near the back is a salt print of a Rembrandt etching, a creased photograph of a family group dated 1853 in pencil below, and a small indistinct image. In four protective plastic sleeves are six more images that were loose in the album, including one of Alfred Swaine Taylor inscribed on the reverse of the backing card 'Collen June 1843' which may be a salt print re-touched by handCollen may refer to Henry Collen, who was miniature portrait painter to Queen Victoria and Fox Talbot's first licensed photographer. It is known that he corresponded with Taylor around this time. In fact, Taylor borrowed Collen's camera so that he could have his own version made.
Autotype print of Fellows of the Royal Society, approx 60 x 40cm, image area 52 x 30cm, Alfred Swaine Taylor is fourth in from right front row, together with papers about his election to the Royal Society 1845-46, and a large portrait print of him from a daguerreotype by Mayall which is torn in half (probably as a result of being stored folded)

English photographer John Jabez Edwin Mayall honed his skills in the nascent art of photography during his travels in North America, he opened studios upon his return to England in 1846, and in 1860 became the first person to produce carte de visite images of Queen Victoria and the Royal family.

A group of five family portrait silhouettes, circa 1836, each being profile portraits heightened with bronzing, to include Alfred Swaine Taylor (probably), two of Caroline Taylor (née Cancellor) annotated verso 'Taken at Brighton July 29th 1836', John Henry Cancellor (Caroline's father), and Marie Cancellor (Caroline's aunt and John's sister), all as ovals and in ebonised frames, each oval approx 8 x 7cm.The Taylors seem to have visited Brighton quite regularly, probably because Caroline's good friend Mary Ann Swinley lived there. In 1837 Mary Ann married Alfred's brother Silas.Silhouettes became a popular souvenir during the 1820s and '30s, as they only took a few minutes to produce, cost very little, and were a permanent reminder of a lovely holiday. Silhouette artists or profilists soon burgeoned in seaside towns such as Brighton, including John Gapp, George Atkinson, and Edward Haines amongst many others. After the Royal Chain Pier in Brighton opened to the public in November 1823 the gaps between the towers were soon taken over as workshops while silhouette artists plied their trade along the pier and beach. As a response to competition, artists began to add flourishes to their work including adding colour and gold paint to produce a bronzing detail effect such as these examples.
