Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS,  British 1769-1830- Portrait study of a gentleman, by repute Joseph Farington, RA; oil on canvas, oval, 51.8 x 44.7 cm. Note:  The present sitter bears a striking resemblance to Joseph Farington (1747-1821), particularly in Lawrence's portrait of the artist which is now in the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina [2564].  Although many of Lawrence's studies are highly-finished, the somewhat looser handling which characterises the present work is also evident in a number of preparatory sketches by Lawrence, including one which sold at Christie's, London, on 29 October 2015 (lot 170), and another at Sotheby's, New York, on 9 June 2011 (lot 102).

John Partridge,  British 1790-1872- The Lady Constantia Lowther aged five; oil on canvas, signed and inscribed 'Constantia Lowther / J. Partridge pinxt.' verso, further inscribed to the stretcher 'THE COLLECTION OF LORD LONSDALE. / NO. 30', painted inventory number '30' (lower left), 103 x 127.5 cm. Provenance:  the collection of Lord Lonsdale, according to the inscription on the reverse.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  Partridge, born in Glasgow in 1790, initially studied under Thomas Philips RA (1770-1845) before entering the Royal Academy Schools in 1816. Between 1823-27 he travelled to Italy to further his development, and soon after returning to London, moved to Brook Street, off Grosvenor Square, in order to be closer to a host of wealthy patrons and sitters. Partridge gained royal patronage in 1836 through a commission from King Leopold I of Belgium (1790-1865). This led to an invitation in 1838 to paint Queen Victoria (1819-1901), which in turn led to further successive paintings of the Queen and of Prince Albert (1819-1861), and in 1843, he became appointed Portrait Painter Extraordinary to both Her Majesty and Prince Albert. The present portrait of Lady Constantia Lowther (1831-1864), aged five, painted in 1836, was commissioned by her father The Honourable Henry Cecil Lowther DL JP (1790-1867), a Conservative politician and second son to William Lowther (1757-1844), 1st Earl of Lonsdale.

(ASTRONOMER) 1730-1805. / OF HIGHBURY HOUSE, LONDON.'  to the upper stretcher bar, bears label for the Sabin Galleries inscribed 'ALEXANDER AUBERT Esq. / F.R.S., F.S.A / (born 1730-died 1805) / by Samuel Drummond A.R.A / 1765-1844' attached to the reverse of the frame, 76 x 63.5 cm. Provenance:  Anon. sale, Bonhams, 5 May 1960, lot 252., by repute.  with the Sabin Galleries, London.  Private Collection, UK. Note:  A print after Drummond's portrait of Aubert by John Chapman (fl.1792-1823) was published in the 'European Magazine' in 1798. Aubert was a businessman, serving as a Director of the London Assurance Company, and also an astronomer, establishing an observatory at Loampit Hill near Deptford, which he later moved to Highbury House in north London.  Drummond depicted a number of prominent contemporaries, including Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), Elizabeth Fry (1780-1845), and Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849). Drummond was employed by both the 'European Magazine' and the 'London Review' to produce portraits of influential contemporaries to be reproduced in their publications, as his portrait of Aubert illustrates.

Arnold Mason RA. (1885-1963) - Portrait of a Lady.  Oil on Canvas. Unframed. Head and Shoulders portrait of a dark haired woman. unsigned, Attribution to verso. 35.5cm x 31cm. Minor losses and scuffing to the paint surface.  Arnold Henry Mason was a British landscape and portrait painter. Mason worked in Paris and Rome. In 1906 he was Assistant to Sir William Richmond on the internal decorations of the Old Bailey Courtrooms, London. He served in the Artists' Rifles 1915–18, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, from 1919. In the 1930s he had a studio in Chelsea. He befriended the artist Roy Beddington and assisted him in getting his career established in London. In 1940, Mason became an Associate of the Royal Academy; he was accepted as a Royal Academician in 1951 and a senior member of the R.A. in 1960. P
