His mother had rented Burgage Manor as they were obliged to let Newstead Abbey. In Southwell, the small town Byron described as "full of parsons", Elizabeth Pigot at twenty one was a lively intelligent and self assured young woman, an amateur watercolourist and keenly interested in literature. They soon became affectionate friends, exchanging letters and books while Byron was away at Cambridge. His one confidante in the area, she did much to ensure the appearance of Byron's first published work, Fugitive Pieces printed locally in Newark in November 1806.After Byron's death she was of invaluable assistance to his first biographer, Thomas Moore and corresponded with publisher John Murray. The present portrait remained in the possession of the Pigot/Becher family until it was acquired privately by the present vendor. When the collection of books and papers of the Pigot family was sold at Sotheby's on July 19, 1993, the picture was illustrated in the catalogue introduction but not included in the sale.++Lined in probably the later 19th or early 20th c, on the stretcher an old stencilled auctioneer's stock number (1116 CF). ENGLISH SCHOOL, 1800-1810 PORTRAIT OF AN OFFICER bust length, oil on panel, oval, 30 x 23cmThe style of the sitter's single breasted tunic and lace at the throat dates the present portrait to the first decade of the 19th century or thereabouts. The officer's cross belt shows no regimental inscription.++The medium a little thin in places and with some possible retouching, the varnish requiring a light clean, the panel not warped or split, the giltwood cavetto frame regilt in a bronzing paint and larger chip on edge of frame at 8 o'clock

Sold with his faded and largely illegible handwritten 1p history of the events and a transcription. The present beautifully preserved portrait by the Chinese artist always known in the West as 'Spoilum' has all the hallmarks associated with his remarkable portraiture, mannerisms and technique. It is directly comparable to other bust length portraits of British and American merchants, captains and members of the HEIC. The support is the same "cheesecloth-like canvas mounted on laminated wood stretchers" (Crossman, plt 10, right) and the original gilt frame matches that of Spoilum's portraits of two unidentified men (Crossman, plt 5 and plt 10, left).Captain George Augustus Delanoe, RN (1762-1802) was the son of John Delanoe of Guernsey and Dorothy Harnage (1726-1807, married 1758), 1st Lieutenant and Commander of HMS "Repulse" a third rate ship of the line of sixty four guns. FOLLOWER OF THOMAS HICKEY PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN small full length in black stock, red coat, yellow breeches and waistcoat, his tricorn on a cannon before a tent in Indian landscape with a fort in the distance, a letter in his left hand addressed J Wallerich Bombay, oil on canvas, oval, 44 x 35cmThe sitter, whose identity may be established on removal of the 'strengthening' of the signature would, it seems safe to assume, have either been a civilian of the Bombay Presidency or an Officer of the same in undress. The tent, a reference to service in the field, cannon and fort taken together point to his involvement in some way with a siege operation. There were several such sieges in the first Anglo-Maratha war, 1775-1782, including that of the great fortress of Gwalior in 1780.++The support somewhat brittle possibly as a consequence of damp and with light overall craqueleur, some retouching, the inscription on the envelope strengthened and somewhat indistinct and difficult to decipher, on what maybe the original stretchers and in contemporary or near contemporary gadrooned gilt frame

As is clearly evident from this interesting and accomplished depiction of the interior of his consulting rooms, his expertise was much in demand, putting a considerable strain on the hotel and facilities of the small town Grafrath outside Solingen. His more distinguished patients included King George V of Hannover (1819-1878). One of de Leuw's sons was the landscape painter Friedrich August de Leuw (1817-1888). ++Exterior of leather case scuffed and scratched with small losses to the surface of the leather retaining both brass hooks. ENGLISH SCHOOL,1830-1850 PORTRAIT OF AN OFFICER THE ROYAL FUSILIERS (7TH REGIMENT OF FOOT) bust length in uniform, oil on canvas, 73 x 59.5cmThe dating of the handsome post Regency Portrait of an Officer, perhaps a Captain of the Grenadier Company of his battalion of the Royal Fusiliers, is confirmed by details of the uniform. A boxed epaulette precludes a date before 1830 and the sitter's coatee was replaced by a tunic in about 1850.++Old restoration and lined on the reverse of the support an old, possibly late 19th c auctioneer's stencilled stock number, extensive old restoration, the medium with a bloomed appearance probably as a result of damp. In 18th/19th c giltwood and composition maratta frame
