Sheridan (Richard Brinsley). The School for Scandal, contemporary manuscript copy, circa 1780s, 278pp. plus blanks, written in a neat hand to rectos only, includes 'A Portrait' to Mrs Crewe, and Prologue by David Garrick at start, Epilogue by George Coleman at end, watermarks include 'G R' and 'L V Gerrevink', some leaves close-trimmed at head (clipping some MS page numbers), light dampstain at lower right corner and occasionally to gutter towards rear, armorial bookplate of Martha Saunders 1777, all edges gilt, contemporary gilt-decorated straight-grained red morocco, slight dampstaining to covers, darkened spine with some wear at head, front joint a little cracked, 4to The School for Scandal premiered at Drury Lane Theatre on 8 May 1777. Its extraordinary success led to a demand for copies for performance and reading, but Sheridan was unable to satisfy himself as to a final version (an unauthorised version appeared in 1780). The result was a very limited circulation of manuscript copies made by persons associated with the Theatre. Transcripts continued to be made until the early nineteenth century - during which period Sheridan was constantly revising his play - until the first authorised version finally appeared in 1821, five years after Sheridan's death in 1816.
