Hide & Seek with the Kings & Queens of England, Series 1, 2 & 3, [1910], together three decks of playing cards, each with eighty-four cards, comprising colour portrait cards and text cards (72 & 12, 71 & 13, and 73 & 11 respectively), a few cards toned or lightly soiled (mostly the text cards), one or two creases, purple versos with armorial, each set with folded printed rule sheet (some minor edge tears), each contained in original green card box with pull-off lid, rubbed and some splitting to extremities, front of lids with mounted colour label (some minor chipping) Extremely unusual to find all three in the series together, complete and in their original boxes, much less in such relatively good condition. *Waugh (Evelyn, 1903-1966). Autograph letter signed, 'Evelyn Waugh', Piers Court, Stinchcombe, Gloucestershire, Christmas Day, 1946, to Monsieur Danver, giving a lengthy account of his entire career up until 1946, Danver was the French translator of 'Vile Bodies': 'your translation... will breathe new life into a text which has become somewhat "dated" in the original', and answering questions about specific phrases and references in the novel, 'Blast was an avant garde publication of the time - Vorticist, - edited by Wyndham Lewis, probably now forgotten by all but a dozen Englishmen', and regretting that he has no recent photograph but enclosing 'a reproduction of the portrait of me made in the year I wrote "Vile Bodies". Perhaps that could be used by the publishers, but they must make plain that I am now 17 years older, fatter & uglier', then giving a lengthy autobiographical account with his academic and other achievements, Modern History at Oxford, painting, cabinet making, all described parenthetically as 'without glory', before listing his publications including his first novel 'Decline and Fall' which 'was a success. Since then I have had no bitter struggles for recognition & have always been unduly praised by critics & unduly prosperous', mentioning his war service, 'varied, enjoyable but without distinction... finished the war among Tito's beastly partisans', his marriage and conversion to Catholicism, and, finally, 'Brideshead Revisited' on which he comments, 'This book is more serious than its predecessors, has annoyed most of the English critics and delighted illiterate Americans in a disconcerting way. But I like it', 4 pp., the final two pages written longitudinally down the centre spread, a little creased at edges, 4to, together with the aforementioned colour reproduction portrait after Lamb, inscribed and initialled by Waugh in ink to lower margin, 'Now aged 43 and much altered for the worse', 8vo, the two items preserved in a purpose-made cloth chemise and quarter morocco gilt book box (2)

Coronation Playing Cards, 1902, double deck of playing cards, each pack with fifty-three cards, comprising four suits of thirteen, each with pip cards 1-10, three double-ended court cards, and joker, versos with portrait of Edward VII and Queen Alexandra respectively, rounded corners, all edges gilt, 91 x 65mm (3.5 x 2.5ins), housed together in a compartmental red cloth-covered card box, pull-off lid (somewhat rubbed and marked) with title in gilt on one side, and mounted card showing Queen Alexandra on the other Scarce companion set in very good condition, made to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII. *Rutherston (Albert, 1881-1953). A collection of original illustrations, seven pen & ink drawings on thick cream paper, consisting of two larger drawings depicting a young girl with a floral posy, three smaller drawings depicting a young girl bathing in a pool between trees, a young couple standing between two trees, and a young couple on a beach, and two tail-piece illustrations of ribbon-tied posies, some minor toning, with remains of adhesive on verso and/or adhesive tape to extreme edges where previously mounted, largest 140 x 131cm (5.5 x 5.25ins), smallest 6.2 x 5.8cm (2.5 x 2.25ins) British artist Albert Daniel Rutherston was a portrait and landscape painter, as well as a book illustrator and designer of posters and stage sets. His brother was painter Sir William Rothenstein (the family was of German Jewish descent and Albert anglicised his surname in 1916). Rutherston trained at the Slade School from 1898 to 1902, and subsequently became Visiting Teacher for the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, as well as Ruskin Master of Drawing at Oxford University from 1929 to 1948. He did a considerable amount of designing for private presses in the 1920s. His work is represented in many public and private collections. (7)

Graham Greene, Xmas 1918". Graham Greene was a boarder at Berkhampstead School at the time, and Rupert Brooke was one of his favourite poets and he frequently quoted lines from Brooke when courting Vivien Dayrell-Browning. (1)

*May (Fred (1891-1976)). A collection of thirty-four original cartoon illustrations, together thirty-three humorous watercolours and one pen & ink drawing, on paper or card, some laid down, various subjects, including golfing, fishing, shooting, caricatures, Christmas and birthday cards (some to the artist's grandchildren), most signed and dated, 18.5 x 12.5cm (7.25 x 5ins) and smaller, seventeen mounted, one framed and glazed, together with some related cuttings and other ephemera Fred May was born in Wallasey, Cheshire, and was the nephew of cartoonist Phil May. He attended the Liscard School of Art, followed by Reading University. His earliest drawings were produced for the 'North Eastern Daily Gazette' and his first cartoons for the 'Tatler' (which he worked for until his death) were sent home in 1917 from the trenches where he was serving as an infantry officer. He is well-known for his military cartoons, which are held in many regimental museums. He also worked for the 'Liverpool Daily Post & Echo', 'The Weekly Sketch' and 'The Graphic', amongst other publications. The National Portrait Gallery holds a number of his caricatures. (34)
