NIKOLAY BOGDANOV-BELSKY (RUSSIAN 1868-1945)Portrait of A. T. He studied painting over the course of a decade, first at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, followed by the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. He spent a few years in the late 1890s studying and working in private studios in Paris, before settling in Riga, Latvia in 1921. There, his focus transitioned from portraiture to painting rural landscapes and peasant children studying in the classroom. This portrait of a gentleman, inscribed by the artist A. T. IVAN KIRILLOVICH PARKHOMENKO (RUSSIAN 1870-1940)Portrait of Aleksey Tchapygin, 1927oil on canvas67 x 52 cm (26 1/2 x 20 1/2 in.)signed and dated upper left LOT NOTESIvan Kirillovich Parkhomenko (1870-1940) was a Soviet portraitist, known for his St. Petersburg gallery that comprised of over 90 Russian realist portraits of various Soviet writers, including those of Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Bunin, Alexander Blok, Demyan Bedny, among many others. In 1908, when he returned to St. Petersburg from studying in Paris, he founded several other portrait galleries, which he dedicated to painting Russian authors, such as Aleksey Remizov, and political figures, including Vladimir Lenin, Sergei Witte, and others. Dubbed the Kremlin Painter, Parkhomenko created realistic, raw portraits, often reflecting his personal opinion of the sitter, which ultimately led to his arrest in 1928. During his two-year sentence, Parkhomenko painted portraits of criminals that recognized his fame and demanded to sit for him. In 1930, he was offered a position in Ukraine as a portraitist of the elite. This was his final artistic period before falling ill and moving back to Moscow in the late 1930s. The present lot is a 1927 portrait of Aleksey Tchapygin, a Russian writer known as one of the founders of the Soviet historical novel.THIS LOT IS BEING SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE.

Eisman-Semenowsky was celebrated for his portraits of women, which were fervently collected by the Parisian bourgeoisie.

She and her husband, the renowned Soviet architect Noi Trotsky, lived and worked in Leningrad. Her work was exhibited with fellow Krug artists in 1928 and 1929, but unfortunately her life was cut short by tuberculosis and she passed away in 1932. This work is particularly interesting because it was executed the year before her death, and features portraits on either side of a canvas: one of a young woman with an elongated face and stylized, voluminous hair, the other of a dark-toned older woman with green eyes.THIS LOT IS BEING SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE.

PINCHAS LITVINOVSKY (ISRAELI-RUSSIAN 1894-1985)Portrait of David Ben-Gurion, oil on paper86.5 x 65.5 cm (34 x 25 3/4 in.)signed lower left LOT NOTES Pinchas Litvinovsky (nee Piotr Vladimirovich), born in Ukraine to a family of Jewish merchants, immigrated to Israel in 1912. Throughout the beginning of his artistic career, Litvinovsky traveled back and forth between Israel and Imperial Russia, studying at various art schools. In the 1920s, he settled down in Israel and joined the young modern artists' movement. His unique manner of painting emerged from the influences of both Russian constructivism and contemporary Hebrew art. In the 1930s, Litvinovsky made several trips to France, discovering the art of Cubists and the School of Paris, which made another great impact on the style of his painting. The present lot, a portrait of the primary founder of the State of Israel and its first Prime Minister, David Ben-Gurion, is an exceptional representation of the personality of an important historic figure through the eyes of his contemporary.

It was originally acquired from David Burliuk by Maurice Jungbeck, the husband of Onya La Tour. Together, Maurice and Onya were favored patrons of David Burliuk. His portraits of Onya and Maurice, as well as a portrait of Maurice Jungbeck, shown here for reference, are in the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Musem of Art. A very active dealer as well as collector, Onya was the owner of the Onya La Tour Gallery at 596 Riverside Drive in New York City as of 1937, where, in addition to Burliuk, she maintained working relationships with A. Brasz, John Graham, Philip Sawyer, and other artists. By 1940 Ona had moved to Indiana, where she campaigned for the opening of the Indiana Museum of Art. Although living in Indiana, over the next years she would also work closely with important collectors such as Katherine Dreier, an author of a monograph on Burliuk. La Tour gifted her personal collection to the Indiana Museum of Art in 1972.
NIKOLAI PETROVICH GLUSHCHENKO (UKRAINIAN 1902-1977)Portrait of a Man with a Yellow Tie, oil on canvas66 x 50 cm (25 x 19 1/2 in.)signed in Latin and Cyrillic upper right LOT NOTES A graduate of the Academy of Art in Berlin (1924), from 1925 Glushchenko worked in Paris where he immediately attracted the attention of French critics. From the Neue Sachlichkeit style of his Berlin period he changed to Post-Impressionism. Besides numerous French, Italian, Dutch, and (later) Ukrainian landscapes, he also painted still life, nudes, and portraits (of Oleksander Dovzhenko and Volodymyr Vynnychenko, as well as portraits commissioned by the Soviet government of the French writers Henri Barbusse, Romain Rolland, and Victor Margueritte and the painter Paul Signac). At the beginning of the 1930s, Gluschenko belonged to the Association of Independent Ukrainian Artists and helped organize its large exhibition of Ukrainian, French, and Italian paintings at the National Museum in Lviv. In 1936 he moved to the USSR, but was allowed to live in Ukraine only after the war, when his works began to reflect an officially approved socialist realism. In the 1960s, having come into a close contact with new artistic trends, he revitalized his paintings with expressive colors, and assumed a leading position among Ukrainian coloristsTHIS LOT IS BEING SOLD WITHOUT RESERVE.

Each gelatin silver print, one measuring 27.5 by 40.5 cm and the other 40.5 by 26.5 cm. Photographed in 1943, printed c. 1960s. Provenance: Private collection, Europe. Mark Markov-Grinberg (1907–2006) was very active in the 1930s when he took some of the most famous images of the time, such as Portrait of the Stakhanovite coal miner Nikita Izotov and photograph Youth, made at one of the Moscow recreation centres. During World War II Markov-Grinberg served as a soldier and only in 1943 became a war correspondent for Krasnoarmeiskaya illiustrirovannaya gazeta. In the 1950s he worked for the VDNKh Publishing House and several periodicals. He participated in many international exhibitions, including those in Australia, Germany, France and England.
A painted satinwood tea caddy, the oval caddy with painted garlands, swags and oval portrait of two young lady's, foil lined interior, 14cm high x 19cm wide There is a lock but no key, no lock plate to the underside of the lid. The painting is rather crude and perhaps not original to the body. Back just lightly faded and some small hair line cracks throughout.

An early 20th century display cabinet, the single astral glazed door flanked by curved glazed sides, over single cupboard door flanked by curved panels, all with hand painted decoration, to include a central oval French-style portrait of a lady reading, on four tapering supports (120cm). Condition Report: Glass all intact, wood in good general order with small chip to front corner. Cupboard door is missing a lock (but key and lock present for the cabinet door). Decoration in good order. Light wear elsewhere commensurate with age.
FRANK BABBAGE (fl. 1856-1916) - A portrait of the shire horse 'Danesfield, Stonewall 23214' in a show ring, oil on canvas, signed and dated 1914, framed, 51cm x 61cm The champion Old English Black shire Danesfield Stonewall was bred by F.D.Muntz of Umberslade Hall, Hockley Heath. This portrait, and several others, were given to Muntz's groom Evan Jones and from thence to present vendor's aunt in 1965.
