Circle Thomas Frye (1710-1762) - Portrait of lady, thought to be Dorothea Molyneux Portrait of lady, thought to be Dorothea Molyneux, three-quarter-length, in a silver dress, holding flowers, seated beside a window Bears inscription, 'Katherine Howard Aunt to the 1st./Visct. Wicklow Married in 1693/to Sr. Ts. Molyneux Bt.' Oil on canvas 135 x 106.5cm (53 1/4 x 42 in). The assumption of the identity of the sitter in the present portrait, traditionally understood to be Katherine Howard, was based on the potentially erroneous inscription, said to have been added by Sir Capel Molyneux of Castle Dillon in 1818. It has been suggested that rather than depicting Katherine Howard, it is more likely that the portrait is of her daughter Dorothea Molyneux. Dorothea was born on March 12th, 1718, the youngest child of Sir Thomas Molyneux and Katherine nee Howard. The present painting is traditionally understood to have come from Dillon Castle, the contents of which were sold 2nd to the 5th October 1923.

(29 7/8 x 25 1/4 in) John Stevens (1793-1868) was a Scottish genre and portrait painter. Born at Ayr, he went on to study at the RA Schools, where he obtained two silver medals in 1818. After practicising portraiture for a time he went to Italy,[1] where he spent the chief part of his artistic career, and where the present portrait would presumably have been painted.
