The image itself was named as ''the most recognised photograph'' in the history of the National Geographic magazine and her face became famous as the cover photograph on the June 1985 issue. The photo has also been widely used on Amnesty International brochures, posters, and calendars. The identity of the ''Afghan Girl'' remained unknown for over 17 years until McCurry and a National Geographic team located the woman, Sharbat Gula, in 2002.

CARL LOHSE (1895 Hamburg - 1965 Bischofswerda) Draußen kocht die See Öl auf Hartfaserplatte. 195859 x 80 cm. S. 225Verso mit einem alten Ausstellungsetikett, darauf betitelt. Carl Lohse war ein deutscher Maler, der heute als einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter des deutschen Expressionismus nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg gilt. Sein Werk umfasst vorwiegend Portrait- und Aktdarstellungen, aber er beschäftigte sich auch mit Landschaftsmotiven, Architektur und dem Arbeitsleben. 1909 besuchte Carl Lohse für ein Jahr die Staatliche Gewerbeschule und die Malschule von Arthur Siebelist in Hamburg. 1913 studierte er an der Akademie in Weimar u.a. bei Fritz Mackensen. Zwei Jahre später ging Lohse in den Kriegsdienst nach Nordfrankreich, wo er nur knapp dem Tode entkam, in englische Gefangenschaft geriet und im Steinbruch arbeiten musste. Nach der Kriegsgefangenschaft ging er 1919 zurück nach Hamburg und zog wenig später nach Bischofswerda. Bereits 1920 nahm der Künstler mit seinem Frühwerk an der Ausstellung der Dresdner Sezession "Gruppe 1919" in Dresden teil und ein Jahr nach Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs beteiligte er sich an der Allgemeinen Deutschen Kunstausstellung, ebenfalls in Dresden.Das hier zum Verkauf stehende Bild entstand in Lohses dritter Schaffensperiode, wo er sich, wie bereits in den Jahren 1935-37, immer wieder für Studienaufenthalte an der Ostsee aufhielt.
