* ARCHIE FORREST RGI (SCOTTISH b. 1950), SYMPHONY oil on canvas, signed, titled label versoframed image size 121cm x 136cm, overall size 136cm x 152cm Exhibition label verso: December 1991, The Portland Gallery, London Note: Archie Forrest is considered to be the leading living Scottish Colourist artist of his generation. Born in Glasgow in 1950 he attended Glasgow School of art between 1969 and 1973 prior to becoming a tutor at the school for seven years. Forrest gave up teaching in 1985 to devote his time to being a full time artist. He was elected a member of the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts in 1988 and is a regular exhibitor at the Royal Scottish Academy since 1975. The artist has won many prizes and collectors for his work throughout the world. In this "Symphony" Forrest demonstrates his ability to create texture and colour whilst capturing the viewers’ attention with his playful use of perspective and reflection. Forrest’s use of broad and angular marks is reminiscent of Cezanne, while the use of colour place him in the legacy of Scottish Colourists S J Peploe and Cadell. The artist uses his self-portrait to guide us through a variety of his work. Challenging the viewer to look closer for the still life, landscape and portraiture within the picture whilst creating reference to the great Scottish colourists Cadell and J D Fergusson in the portraits on his studio floor. Forrest has created a painting which demonstrates his artistic ability, but also one the viewer can revisit over and over again.

* JOHN BELLANY CBE RA HRSA (SCOTTISH 1942 - 2013), THE PORTRAIT OF ALBERT IRVIN RA oil on canvas, signed and titled, dated 1987 verso framed image size 151cm x 121cm, overall size 170cm x 137cm Note 1: From 1973 to 1978 Bellany was head of the Faculty of Painting at Croydon College of Art, where his colleagues included David Royle, Denis Bowen, Barry Martin and Mel Gordon. It was at this time that he became a close friend of the abstract-expressionist painter Albert Irvin OBE RA. They had first met at the RCA and Irvin selected his "Three Fishermen" for a London Group exhibition. Bellany invited Irvin to teach at Croydon on a part-time basis, a compliment later returned when Bellany left Croydon and Irvin found him a job at Goldsmiths College of Art. Bellany was drinking heavily at this time and as Albert Irvin later commented "To go out with John meant you were going to lose two days of your life". Bellany's 1988 liver transplant started early in the morning of 30th April - the day before "May Day", the seafarers distress call. An irony not lost on him. Remarkably, he was deemed well enough to receive visitors by 12 May and the first were Bert and Betty Irvin. Irvin wrote: John was in his single room in Ward C9 with balloons tied to his bedhead. Watercolours and drawings that he's done since he's been here were on the walls as was the photograph of him and Helen by Lord Snowdon and several of his postcards. The rest were in a box under his bed. He looked yellow and his eyes were very yellow, as Helen had warned us. He was magnificent. His will to survive and his optimism were indomitable. His sense of humour was superbly and ridiculously intact, as when he insited that we have photographs taken with him with his pyjamas open & his operation and pipes, and bottles and bags on display". Albert Irvin was known as "Uncle Bert" to the Bellany family. Note 2: Collector demand has never been higher for the work of John Bellany and numerous examples have been sold in recent months by both McTear's and others at ever more impressive prices. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 29th May 2022 "The Finnon Smoker" by Bellany sold for £80,000 (hammer) and in the same sale, "Bass Rock Fable" (a 76 x 61cm unframed oil) sold for £12,000 (hammer). In our 21st August 2022 auction, lot 137 "The Newspaper Hat" (a 61 x 51cm oil) sold for £9500 (hammer). "Like-for-like" auction prices for original paintings are usually difficullt to assess, but in The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of April 2023, two Bellany paintings which had been acquired in our auctions in September and November 2014 were consigned for sale by the same owner. The original 2014 selling prices were £1800 and £4000 and the same paintings sold in April for £3800 and £7000 (all hammer prices). This equates to a growth in value of 86.2% in fewer than nine years. In The Scottish Contemporary Art Auction of 25th May 2023, lot 282, "Restless Wave" a 90 x 90cm oil (by Bellany) sold for £9000 (hammer) and in our auction of 9th November, lot 92, "Harbour" a 90 x 120cm oil by Bellany sold for £11000 (hammer).

* BARBARA BALMER RSA RSW RGI (SCOTTISH 1929 - 2017), TULIPS IN JUG watercolour on paper, signedmounted, framed and under glassimage size 52cm x 69cm, overall size 84cm x 101cm Note: Barbara Balmer had a singular vision. Her pictures have a curious, if not surreal, edge. In her instantly recognisable style, she took the everyday and simplified it into shapes and patterns that she filled with subtle gradations of colour. Born in Birmingham, she moved to Scotland by way of a scholarship from Coventry School of Art that took her to Edinburgh College of Art (1949-1953). Her contemporaries are a roll call of familiar names of Scottish art: Elizabeth Blackadder, John Houston and Frances Walker to name a few. Balmer, however, eschewed the expressive brushwork and vibrant palette of the time and developed her own unique visual vocabulary. Throughout her long career, spanning more than five decades, she was twice selected to exhibit at the John Moores Exhibition in Liverpool, and had solo shows at the Richard Demarco Gallery and the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh, the Scottish Arts Council Touring Exhibitions and at the Fine Art Society in Edinburgh. Barbara taught at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen between 1970 and 1980 and held a retrospective exhibition at Aberdeen Art Gallery which travelled to Dundee, Lincoln and Coventry. Her work is included in many public and private collections including, The Royal Collection, The Scottish National Portrait Gallery (Portrait of Richard Demarco), The City Art Centre, Edinburgh, Leicester City Museum, Aberdeen and Stirling Universities, Aberdeen, Glasgow, Birmingham, Perth, Dundee and Lincoln Art Galleries. Seven of her paintings were used as dust jackets by Virago for the Modern Classics series and she was an elected member of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. In Barbara's obituary in The Herald, Richard Demarco wrote: "I hesitate to define her as an English, Scottish or indeed British artist. Her particular art must be viewed as belonging to the great and enduring tradition associated with the latest manifestations of European painting in this age of modern art".
* SACHA JAFRI (BRITISH b. 1977), FIELD OF DREAMS gouache & ink on German-etched canvas paper, signed and dated '99, completed 2001framedimage size 51cm x 70cm, overall size 63cm x 83cm Provenance: digital certificate of authenticty issued by Studio Jafri, Dubai 2024.Note: Sacha Jafri (born January 3, 1977, in the United Kingdom) is a British artist known for creating the world's largest painting on canvas, Journey of Humanity (as recognised by Guinness World Records) over seven months in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic in Dubai. In 2021, it sold for US$62 million the third highest price ever paid for a work of art by a living artist. Sacha Jafri was born in England and is descended from the Royal lineage of the Nawab of Awadh. His grandfather Fareed S. Jafri was appointed editor of "Dawn" newspaper by Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the 1950s, and was later appointed Pakistan's High Commissioner to Nigeria in 1968. Jafri attended Eton College. In 2000 he obtained his master's degree in Fine Arts from Oxford University. Safri generally works outside the art gallery system, donates many of his works and or proceeds from them to charity efforts, and numbers among his collectors members of the British Royal family, Sir Richard Branson, Sir Paul McCartney, Leonardo DiCaprio, Bill Gates, Lady Gaga, Will Smith, Warren Buffet, Lionel Messi, Madonna, David Beckham, George Clooney, Eva Longoria and Barack Obama. Sacha’s first love, however, is cricket. No wonder, he enjoyed painting odes to Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli—the latter portrait celebrating a decade of Kohli’s IPL journey was auctioned off at a charity dinner organised by the Virat Kohli Foundation in 2017 (the painting was later purchased for a whopping $4.5m at a charity ball in London).
