GUIDO RENI St. Sebastian. Oil on canvas. 59 x 43cm (oval). Provenance by descent from the aircraft designer, William Oak Manning (1879-1958) and before him, with Sir William Montague Manning, the Devon born Australian politician, judge and University of Sydney Chancellor. Together with some family albums and a family accounts book. This lot also includes a portrait of Sir William after John Watson Gordon. (See back cover illustration)
A Bohemian green and white overlay glass pedestal vase of trumpet shaped form with ‘petal’ rim, the front with oval portrait panel of a young girl with a rose in her hair, the reverse with anthemion and petal cut panels in white reserved on a gilt scrolling ground, 25.5 cm high, mid 19th century.
Sir John Lavery (1856-1941) Mrs William Lawson Peacock bust-length portrait wearing a blue dress with a fur coat, feather hat and double string pearl necklace signed J Lavery bottom right inscribed on the reverse of the canvas ‘Mrs W L Peacock by John Lavery 1912’ oil on canvas 76 x 63.5cm. Provenance: By family descent. The sitter is the vendor’s great grandmother. Footnote: The sitter’s husband, William Lawson Peacock (circa 1850-1925) is thought to have had a Canadian connection. It is believed he was a picture dealer, being at one time a director of the French Gallery in Pall Mall and having galleries in Duke Street, Bond Street and Edinburgh. There were four daughters by their marriage; May, Ethel, Helen and Winifred.
