Erdely, oil painting on board, portrait of a man. 37 cm x 25 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This painting is framed and glazed. There are some grey areas on the ear and around the hair and it is very difficult to see whether this is actually discolouration to the paintwork or actually dirt of some description on the glass. It may simply be paint discolouration. Other than this the piece is in generally good condition with no visible damage, repairs or restoration.
English School (19th century), oil painting on panel, portrait of the poet Robert Southey, bust length. 23.5 cm x 16.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The painting is framed. The frame is probably original. The backing paper is old and has not been removed. The painting itself is on a wooden board and is in generally good although very dirty condition. There are no significant paint losses and no evidence of any repairs or restoration. The painting could do with a clean. It has been entered by a local private vendor who bought the painting at auction locally a few years ago.
A pair of Vienna vases, decorated with portrait panels and signed "Kiel". Height 22 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both vases have minor rubbing to the gilding. One vase is undamaged. The second vase with the lady with the less elaborate hat has been broken at the narrow point of the knop beneath the portrait. This is clearly visible. Other than this no further damage.
A pair of Sevres porcelain cylindrical caskets, relief moulded with Napoleon and Josephine, circular, with metal mounts and hinged, marked to the base "M. Imple de Sevres". Each diameter 8.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both caskets are in generally good condition with no significant damage, no significant repairs and no restoration. The Napoleon casket is a little dirty particularly around the portrait. The metal circumference has been detached from the base and there is evidence of glue indicating reattachment. The base of the interior is a little stained and crazed but there are no real issues with this casket. The Josephine casket is in very similar condition. The only difference is that the underside of the lid is showing two semi circular glaze cracks which are not evident from the top. There are no series issues with this piece either.
After Behnes, a filled metal (bronze ?) portrait bust of Queen Victoria as a young child. Height 54 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The bust is not a cast bronze piece. It is however a metal outer shell with a plaster filled interior. The metal is some form of copper alloy. The piece certainly looks like bronze and is in extremely good condition.
* English School (16th century), oil on panel, "Portrait of Sir John Puckering", half length, wearing robes as Keeper of The Great Seal, with armorial to top left. 89 cm x 73 cm, in ebonised frame with gilt slip and title plaque (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: We do not know the name of the artist who painted the picture. But as stated the painting is 16th century and therefore we believe that the painting will have been painted at the time when Sir John Puckering was keeper of The Great Seal which I believe he was for four years between 1592-1596. As he died in 1596 it is likely that the painting dates from around this time. The painting has come to us from the Estate of Miss Mary Burkett OBE formerly of Isel Hall, Cocker mouth, Cumbria. The condition of the painting is generally good and it could be hung in its present condition without the need for any remedial work. The painting has had some restoration work which is visible under a UV lamp. The restoration work is not extensive and the main areas that have been restored are as follows:- On the face there is a small dent right at the centre of the right eye. There is also evidence of an old scratch running across the mouth area of the sitter, the indentation is just visible with the naked eye and more visible under the UV light. There are small areas of restoration below the hairline on the forehead these being 3 small patches. Also visible under a UV light is a scratch across the bridge of the nose and various small flecks and poke mark type flecks on the cheeks. There are also small areas that have been touched in all around the edge of the portrait next to the frame. The portrait is on three panels and the joins of each panel are clearly visible. The left hand panel is slightly recessed from the middle panel and there is a clear ridge here. In my opinion the painting could be hung and enjoyed in its present condition without the need for any restoration work, however the frame is a little plain and uninteresting and you may wish to replace this.
* English School (early 17th century), oil on panel, portrait of Lady Parker (nee Mary Senhouse), three-quarter length, wearing bonnet, embroidered ruff and lace embroidered dress, holding a prayer book in her right hand, inscribed "t.r. AE33" and "t.l. 1605". 89 cm x 72 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This painting is from the Estate of the Late Miss Mary Burkett, formally of Isel Hall, Cockermouth, Cumbria. The portrait is generally in very good condition. We have inspected it with a UV light which has revealed some small areas of overpainting but no significant issues in our opinion. There are minor blemishes to the end of the sitters nose and on the cheeks. There are also minor blemishes on the hands and old scratch marks all of which are only visible under a UV light. The right facing hand has some overpainting on the wrist and at the bottom edge of the cuff. There is also some restoration on the sleeve at the top of the dress. There is a small patch of overpainting on the collar of the dress on the left hand side. The painting is on a three plank wooden panel. The panel joins are not currently visible but are when viewed under a UV light. There is a small crack to the bottom of the right hand panel join which runs for approximately 4 inches. This is minor. The panel is bowed, however this may be intentional as the frame that the painting is in compensates for this bow. The left and right hand corners of the picture are approximately 1 inch deeper than the centre of the panel and the bow across the front is uniform.
* English School (mid 19th century), oil on board, portrait of a woman seated half length and wearing a red dress, necklace and with lamp to right hand side. 30 cm x 24 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: This painting is framed and glazed it is therefore not possible to see the rear of the piece. It does however generally look to be in extremely good condition with no visible damage, no repairs and no restoration. The glass is a little dirty and the frame whilst period and serviceable is a little tatty with some minor losses and scuffs.
