A Victorian Carte de Visite of William T Stead (Titanic Casualty), dated 1885, wearing a prisoner's uniform, together with some research material. **William T Stead was imprisoned for campaigning against the "White Slavery of Children", the law was later changed and the age of consent was raised from thirteen to sixteen years. He was later nominated for the first Nobel Peace Prize for his work. William T Stead was onboard the ill fated Titanic following an invite from the US President to attend a Peace Conference in New York. (There is now a memorial to him in Central Park.) Prior to this Stead published two articles predicting the collision with an iceberg and the sinking of a White Star liner and the subsequent high loss of life due to the lack of lifeboats. He inadvertantly predicted his own death as he went down with the ship. Together with a Portrait Photograph of his nephew George Kenneth Stead, who was a Captain in a Yorkshire Regiment attached to the Royal Flying Corps.
A Fine 17th Century Oil on Panel, Portrait of a Noble Woman, painted in detail; wearing a ruff collar and gold chain with a black gown and a fur shawl. The top left painted with a coat of arms above the inscription AT 29. Measuring 22 ins x 16½ ins (56 cms x 42 cms), in a giltwood frame 27½ ins x 21½ ins (70 cms x 55 cms).
A Set of Four 16th Century Italian Velvet Altar Cloth Panels appliquéd and embroidered in gold threads with fine scrolling foliate decoration displayed against crimson velvet backgrounds: each of the panels centred by portrait roundels of saints amidst lavish flowering scrolls 15 ins x 21½ ins (38 cms x 55 cms).
A Small 17th Century Oak Coffer, the front carved with two Romayne panels; a male & female profile portrait within roundels bordered by foliate spandrels. The top rail carved with Gothic tracery arches centred by a fleur-de-lis above an iron lock plate and a muntin carved with a tracery arch. The lower rail ornamented with two serpentine beasts and flanked by tracery uprights. Standing on stile feet 23½ ins high, 35½ ins x 19 ins (90 cms x 48 cms).
An Impressive Renaissance Revival Screen (A/F). The three sections having twenty two profusely carved panels bordered by palmate carved supports. Painted & gilded on one side, with a heraldic crested surmount flanked with shields and topped with a crown. The middle section having three panels; the large central panel elaborately carved with a column of acanthus radiating scrolls of foliage, dragon heads & putti with four figures at it's base. The opposite side carved with a heraldic crest within a cartouche and figures riding mythical beasts. The flanking sections enriched with painted crests on one side and a male and female profile portrait with roundel borders on the other. 78 ins x 66 ins (198 cms x 168 cms).
