A Distinguished Conduct Medal group of six to Captain W.H.M. Dow Royal Artillery, DCM (awarded during 2nd Boer War - 66435 Bty-Serjt:- Major W.H.M. Dow R.H.A.), QSA with clasps for Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast and South Africa 1901 (66435 B.S. Major W.H.M. Dow O Bty R.H.A.); EVIIR LSGC (66435 Bty. Sjt. Mjr W.H.M. Dow R.H.A.); 1914-15 Star (Lieut. & Adjt W.H.M. Dow D.C.M. R.F.A.); 1914-18 War Medal and Victory Medal (Capt. W.H.M. Dow); together with parchment certificate of service, certificates of commission, various photographs of the recipient in portrait and during manoeuvres, and a large collection of other documents and ephemera. Captain Dow joined the Royal Artillery in 1888 at the age of 15 1/2. He served in the Boer War of 1899-1902 and was awarded the D.C.M. Discharged in 1910, owing to medical reasons, he volunteered at the outbreak of war in 1914, and rose to the rank of Captain. The documents offered with this lot include much correspondence that attests to the recipient`s exceptional character, and also various letters recording a dispute with the War Office over its failure to grant him an Officer`s rate of pension.
A collection of early 20th Century military and topographical postcards, including uniformed portraits and group shots of British soldiers, scenes in China including street life and the beheading of Boxer rebels by Japanese troops with Sikhs in attendance, British India, Egypt and the Mediterranean; together with a larger format group portrait of part of the 1st Battalion the Middlesex Regiment on foreign service.
Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones Bt, A.R.A. (1833-1898), Portrait Study of a Young Girl, Inscribed with a personal inscription To Sir Henry Austen Layard from EBJ, also dated July 1893, pencil drawing, 22cm by 17.5cm. Born in Birmingham, went to Exeter College, Oxford and friended William Morris. He intended to enter the church, but was impressed by the work of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and in 1856 left Oxford, to become a painter. He later met Rossetti and in 1857 they worked together on the Morte d`Arthur wall paintings in the Union Debating Society`s room at Oxford. As a partner in the firm of Morris & Co, he produced many designs for stained glass and tapestries. He became a member of the Old Watercolour Society in 1868, but resigned in 1870 following criticism. Exhibiting only once at the Royal Academy in 1886, resigning his Associateship in 1893. He exhibited five works at the opening exhibition of the Grosvenor Gallery 1877, which quickly established his reputation as England`s most influential artist. Thereafter he exhibited mainly at the Grosvenor and New Galleries, and occasionally at the Old Watercolour Society. He was created a Baronet in 1894. In the 1880s and 1890s became an international figure, awarded the Legion of Honour amongst other European honours. His was a consciously aesthetic and unworldly style, which combined the romanticism of Rossetti with the medievalism of William Morris-most of his subjects are taken from the Arthurian legends. He rarely painted in oils or watercolours, preferring to experiment with mixed media. He had many pupils and imitators including Stillman, Sandys, Soloman, Strudwick, Rooke, Stanhope, Murray and de Morgan. The sale of his studio was held at Christie`s on 16-18 July 1898. Circle of Joseph Highmore (1692-1780), "Daughters of Crisp Molineaux, Elizabeth, afterwards Lady Barnaby -", portrait of two girls, three-quarter length, each standing, one in ivory, the other in pink satin dress, holding a floral garland, a doe behind, draped landscape background, Inscribed on an old label, oil on canvas, 127.5cm by 137cm. Contained within its original 18th century carved giltwood frame. The artist studied at Kneller`s Academy and was a polished portraitist by the 1720`s. After 1730, his work became more Rococo in its style. From 1743 to 1744, he made a series of twelve illustrations for his friend, Samuel Richardson`s novel Pamela. In 1762, Highmore abandoned painting, retiring to Canterbury and devoted himself to writing. See illustration
Attributed to Lemuel Francis Abbott (c.1760-1802), Portrait of Admiral James Douglas, three quarter length, in uniform, his sword under his left arm, Oil on canvas, 91.5cm by 71.5cm. By direct descent to the present owner, a relative of the sitter. Admiral Douglas`s sword is still in the family collection. See illustration
Stephen Catterson Smith, The Elder P.R.H.A. (1806-1872), Portrait of a Young Lady, standing, three quarter length, her left arm resting upon a chair, a landscape in the distance, Signed, indistinctly dated, possibly 1850 and inscribed Dublin, oil on panel, 45.5cm by 35cm. Born in Yorkshire and studied at the Royal Academy Schools and in Paris, working in Londonderry 1839-1845. He moved to Dublin, became President of the RHA 1859-1866 and in 1868 Director of the National Gallery. He exhibited at the RHA, the RA and the British Institute. See illustration
Nicholas Chevalier (1828-1902) Australian, Portrait of Miss Winifred Hudson as a Young Girl, seated at a piano, her doll nearby, Signed and dated 1888, oil on canvas, 122cm by 91.5cm. Ex. collection Major P I C Payne, Whitehall, Old Cleeve, Minehead, Somerset. The work was cleaned, restored and varnished by E. Stacy-Marks Ltd, Eastbourne, 7th October 1977. Swiss painter and illustrator of Russian birth, active in Australia. In 1845 returned to Lausanne, studying under J. G. Guignard. In 1851 moved to London studying lithography under Ludwig Gruner, and in 1853-4 he studied watercolour painting in Rome. He arrived in Australia on 25 December 1854, working as an illustrator for local newspapers. 1858-1864 he accompanied scientific expeditions into the wilderness. The Buffalo Ranges was the first Australian painting purchased for the National Gallery of Victoria. See illustration
Frederick William Elwell R.A., R.O.I., R.P. (1870-1958), "Avalon", Signed and dated 1920, inscribed verso, oil on panel, 30.5cm by 41cm. Ex. collection W.B. Hall Esq. Sold together with a video on the artist narrated by Tom Baker. Born in Beverley studied at Lincoln School of Art, the Academy Schools in Antwerp and the Académie Julian Paris. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1895 and the Paris Salon from 1894. In 1914 married Mary Dawson Bishop (1874-1952), a painter of landscapes and interiors. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of Portrait painters in 1931 and an associate of the Royal Academy in 1931 followed by full membership in 1938. See illustration
Jacob Kramer L.G. (1892-1962), Portrait of a Young Lady, head and shoulders, wearing a red dress, Signed "Kramer", oil on canvas, 60.5cm by 51cm. Born in the Ukraine, the son of a painter. His parents settled in Leeds in 1900 where he began his art studies. He was later sent to the Slade School by the Education Aid Society and began to exhibit at the New English Art Club from 1914 onwards. He also attended evening classes at Manchester School of Art. Sir Michael Sadler became his patron, and he had a solo show with Matthews & Brooke in Bradford. He was invited to show with the Vorticists in London and was elected a member of the London Group. He began to create a name as a Yorkshire-based artist, showing with Fred Lawson at Leeds School of Art in 1916, and having a solo show at the Bradford Arts Club. In 1959 he was elected President of Leeds Fine Arts Club, and in 1960 had a retrospective exhibition at Leeds City Art Gallery. Six years after his death the City of Leeds Branch College of Art was renamed The Jacob Kramer College of Art. His later shows were at the Parkin Gallery (1973), Belgrave Gallery (1990), and a centenary show at Leeds University Arts Gallery. A Jacob Epstein sculpture of him is in the Tate Gallery, which holds his work, as do the V&A Museum and the British Museum. See illustration
