Daphne Foskett records a Thomas Bishop working from the 18th century to about 1833.

Residenz Stadt, der Konige in Engelland, c.1780, uncoloured engraved view of London from Blackfriars Bridge to beyond the Tower of London, the upper portion containing title and key of 52 principal places printed in black letter text, with decorative portrait of Conrad III of Germany (1093-1152), printed on laid paper, 178 x 295mm, mounted, framed and glazed. A scarce cartographic curiosity and part of a series of maps that were produced by the German periodical “Sachsischer Postillon” in the 1780s. London, not well known for its minarets, resembles Constantinople and the presence of both the Globe Theatre and Blackfriars Bridge places the view in a very ambiguous period of time. Senac, a member of the Academie Royale des Sciences and physician to Louis XV, is best known for this work on the heart. It includes seventeen finely engraved plates and provides ‘the first comprehensive and systematic treatise on the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the heart and its diseases’ (Heirs 823); GM 2733; Osler 3960. Moore (John). Educated at Malvern College, he began his working life in the family auctioneering and estate agency business at Tewkesbury but at an early age took to writing, notably on the countryside. He helped to inaugurate the Cheltenham Festival of Literature in 1949. He was chairman of the Festival Committee until 1956 when he was joined as co-director by the late Robert Henriques. *Cricket 1870s. A watercolour portrait of a Victorian cricketer, possibly in Cambridge colours, c.1870s, on artist’s board, unsigned, sheet size 34.5 x 23cm, together with two c.1870s albumen photographs depicting a party of about fifty men, many in cricket whites and with bats and gloves, the two images presumably taken on the same day probably in Africa or India with British flags behind, many figures in pith helmets, each image 19 x 26.6cm. The sitter of the portrait bears a strong resemblance to one of the party in the images. (3).

JOHN HENRY AMSHEWITZ^ RBA (1882-1942) UNCLE TOBY AND THE DANCER signed and inscribed verso^ 59.5 x 49cm The muralist^ portrait painter and cartoonist J H Amshewitz spent prolonged periods working in South Africa and remained there from 1936 until his death. A friend of Sickert^ he painted Mahatma Ghandi from life in London in 1931 and an account of his life and art was published by his wife^ Sarah Briana Amshewitz (Batsford^ 1951). ++Unlined with tiny patched tear upper centre.
