NOGUCHI HIDEYO: (1876-1928) Japanese Bacteriologist who discovered the agent of syphilis in 1911. Brief Autograph Quotation Signed, Hideyo Noguchi, on a postcard featuring an affixed magazine portrait, n.p., 12th March 1926. Noguchi has penned the Latin phrase `Labor omnia vincit` (`Hard work conquers all`) in his hand, adding his signature and date beneath. Some light overall age wear, G
MILLAIS JOHN EVERETT: (1829-1896) English Painter, one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. A.L.S., John Everett Millais, three pages, 8vo, Cromwell Place, 31st January 1863, to Mrs. Tindal. Millais states that he won`t have any time to leave London as he `must consult Lord Nugent`s Life of Hampden, and the frontispiece portrait wh. will doubtless be sufficient.` The artist continues `In a woodcut drawing which is always more or less sacrificed under the engraver`s knife, only the character of a face can be attempted` and adds that he had spoken to Mr. Walford on the subject `in the hope of getting a sight of an engraving or photograph of the picture you mention.` The ink is a little light, although perfectly legible. PUNCH CARTOONISTS: A remarkable oblong 8vo autograph album containing 27 original pen and ink drawings and cartoons by various Punch cartoonists, comprising (in order of appearance within the album), Kenneth Bird (1887-1965, English Cartoonist, known as Fougasse) a small original colour pencil sketch of an artist with a learner L plate on the back of his coat, signed Kenneth Bird, Fougasse in ink immediately above the drawing; Russell Brockbank (1913-1979, Canadian-born Cartoonist) an original pen and ink sketch of a man running at speed along a pavement, signed with his name alone above the drawing; Ernest H. Shepard (1879-1976, English Artist & Book Illustrator) a fine, rare original pen and ink sketch depicting the towering figure of Mr. Punch standing opposite Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet who both appear a little nervous before the anarchic Punch who is dressed in a jester`s motley, signed by Shepard with his name alone above the drawing; George Sprod (1919-2003, Australian Cartoonist) an original black pen and ink cartoon depicting a tourist in London asking a tall policeman for assistance with his guide book, neatly laid down to the page of the album and signed and inscribed beneath, `To John Taylor, with best wishes, Sprod`; Mervyn Wilson (1905-1959, Comic Artist) an original black pen and ink cartoon depicting a mother sewing a patch on her young son`s trousers while he lies across her knees, drawn on a 12mo card and dated 1953. Neatly laid down to the page of the album which is signed by Wilson at the head; Harold Hailstone ( - , English Cartoonist and Artist, brother of Bernard) a good original pen and ink drawing depicting an old man standing at the foot of some steps to a Public House, beckoning two younger men who run across to the pub from the other side of the street, signed Hailstone at the centre of the drawing; Joshua Armitage (1913-1998, English Illustrator, known as Ionicus) a good original colour pen and ink sketch of the head of Mr. Punch in profile. Signed Jos. Armitage (Ionicus) at the base; John Taylor ( - , Artist, and compiler of this album) a black pen and ink drawing, possibly a self caricature, of a man`s head in profile, smoking a cigarette. Signed with his initials JWT immediately beneath the drawing and again signed with his full signature at the head of the page; William Sillince (1906-1974, British Artist) an original black pen and ink drawing depicting a woman pausing to listen to a small bird singing from a tree while walking in the countryside, her small dog appearing a little disgruntled at her side. Signed (`W. A. Sillince`) in fountain pen ink at the head of the drawing; Rowland Emett (1906-1990, English Cartoonist) an original pen and ink drawing depicting three men in the sea engaged in typically silly pursuits, entitled Porter`s Half-Holiday. Signed in bold black ink at the head of the drawing, `For John F. Taylor, from Rowland Emett`. Neatly laid down to the page of the album, which is again signed by Emmet and annotated in Taylor`s hand `Original drawing from Far Twittering`; Bernard Hollowood (1910-1981, English Writer and Cartoonist) a simple original pen and ink drawing of a cricket bat bearing the words John F. Taylor-Specially Selected-One of the best and date 1953. Signed by Hollowood with his name alone at the head of the page; Ronald Searle (1920- , English Artist and Cartoonist) an excellent original black pen and ink sketch depicting an elderly upper class gentleman standing in a three quarter length pose and holding a large lit cigar in one hand. Signed by Searle at the head of the page and inscribed in his hand at the base of the drawing; Norman Mansbridge (1911-1993, English Cartoonist) an original black pen and ink sketch of a man standing in a full length pose on the deck of a ship. Smoking a pipe, he holds his cap in one hand and waves farewell. Signed by Mansbridge at the head of the page and dated 1953 at the base; David Langdon (1914- , English Cartoonist) an original black pen and ink cartoon depicting a young man running away from a window which he has just smashed with a cricket ball. Signed by Langdon with his name alone at the head of the page; Leslie Starke (1905-1974, British Cartoonist) an original black pen and ink sketch depicting a vicar in a head and shoulders pose smoking a pipe, the rings of smoke creating halos above his head. Signed (`Starke`) at the base of the drawing and again signed with his full signature at the head of the page; Douglas England (1891-1971, English Cartoonist) an original black pen and ink sketch of an upper class gentleman dressed in an evening suit, signed to the lower white border with his full signature. Neatly laid down to the page, again signed Douglas at the head, and with a loosely inserted A.L.S. from England to John Taylor, sending the drawing; George Hickson ( - , Cartoonist, known as Hickey) an original colour pen and ink drawing of an elderly lady seated in a full length pose knitting a long scarf bearing the words `To John with best wishes from`, the drawing with an affixed signature of Hickson at the base, dated 1953. Neatly laid down to the page, again signed Hickey at the head; Harry Hewitt ( - , Illustrator) a small original pen and ink drawing of batsman Golobrai Sipahimalani Ramchand in an action pose at the crease. Slightly irregularly trimmed and neatly laid down to the page which is signed by Hewitt at the head. Also annotated by Taylor `Published in Punch 4.VI.52`; Arnold Wiles ( - , English Illustrator and Cartoonist) an original pen and ink cartoon of an unshaven man walking in a full length pose with a sandwich board reading `To John F. Taylor with best wishes from A F Wiles`, the signature incorporated within the cartoon. Neatly laid down to the page; Kenneth Mahood (1930- , Irish Cartoonist) a good original colour pen and ink cartoon of a vicar in a rather glum mood aiming a revolver towards the halo above his head. Signed in full at the base of the cartoon. Neatly laid down to the page; Michael ffolkes (1925-1988, British Illustrator and Cartoonist) an excellent original colour pen and ink drawing of an artist of eccentric appearance, with a long arm, painting a fish onto canvas. Signed at the base `Best wishes from ff` and again signed `Michael ffolkes` at the head of the page; William Scully (1910-2002, English Cartoonist) an original pen and ink drawing of a man, most likely a self caricature, seated in a full length pose at a desk. He holds a pen in one hand as he writes in the notebook before him. Neatly laid down to the page which is signed by Scully at the head; Leslie Illingworth (1902-1979, British Cartoonist) a fine original colour pen and ink portrait drawing of Winston Churchill, smoking a cigar, on a 12mo card. Signed and inscribed `To John, Illingworth`and dated 1950. Neatly cornermounted to the page, which is also signed Illingworth at the head; Ronald Niebour (1903-1972, British Cartoonist, known as Neb) an original pen and ink caricature of a balding man with a large nose and spectacles wearing a shirt with high starched collars, on a 12mo card. Framed and glazed in a wooden frame to an overall size of 16.5 x 21. VG
ELGAR EDWARD: (1857-1934) English Composer. An important signed and inscribed 7.5 x 10 presentation photograph by Elgar, the image showing him in a formal semi-profile head and shoulders pose. Photograph by J. Russell & Sons of London. Boldly signed and inscribed in ink to the lower photographer`s mount to Hans Richter, `To Dr. Hans Richter, with deepest reverence & loving regard, from Edward Elgar` and dated Birmingham, 1900 in his hand. An exceptional signed portrait with superb association. Very slightly irregularly trimmed to the left edge and with some very minor, light age wear to the photographer`s mount, about VG Hans Richter (1843-1916) Austrian Conductor. An admirer of Elgar`s work, Richter conducted the first performance of the composer`s The Dream of Geronitus in Birmingham Town Hall as part of the Birmingham Music Festival on 3rd October 1900. Elgar presented Richter with this signed photograph in memory of the occasion. The photograph was given by Richter`s son, Edgar, to the present vendor`s father when he stayed with the Richter`s in Bayreuth in 1934.
LUMIERE LOUIS: (1864-1948) French Pioneer Cinematographer who, with his brother Auguste, showed the first motion pictures using film projection in 1895. [ELIZABETH II]: (1926- ) Queen of the United Kingdom 1952- . A miniature (2 x 2.75) book entitled The Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, being the Form and Order of the Service performed in the Abbey Church of St. Peter, Westminster on 2nd June 1953, published by Achille J. St Onge, Worcester, Massachusetts, 1953 and printed by the Chiswick Press in red and black type. Luxuriously bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in full red morocco with gilt stamping to covers including double-rule borders. Pastedowns and endleaves patterned and with all edges gilt. One of a limited edition of 2000. The frontispiece portrait of Elizabeth II is neatly detached, otherwise VG

GAGARIN YURI: (1934-1968) Russian Cosmonaut, the first man to travel in space, 1961. Printed card signed, Yuri Gagarin, in Cyrillic, one page, oblong 8vo, Moscow, n.d. (1965). The card, printed in Spanish, is headed Society of Friendship of USSR-Cuba and pays tribute to the heroes of the Bay of Pigs on the fourth anniversary of the unsuccessful American attempt to invade Cuba in 1961. Signed by Gagarin in red ink (the signature slightly faded although completely legible) in his capacity as President of the Society and also bearing the blue ink signature of Baskakova, the Secretary General. Matted in black and grey alongside a First Day Cover commemorating Gagarin and a portrait of the cosmonaut. Framed and glazed in a wooden frame to an overall size of 17.5 x 13. VG The anniversary of the Bay of Pigs invasion was also the anniversary of Gagarin`s historic first flight into space, which also took place in April, 1961.
WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., Wellington, two pages, 4to, Verona, 10th November 1822, to George Hayter (1792-1871, English Painter). Wellington encloses a note (no longer present) from Mr. Robinson and continues `I don`t return the Print as I conclude that he has another, and at all events if he has not the attentions must be delayed until I return to England.` The Duke further writes, `It appears true that the eyes are too dark, & not of the proper colour; and there is something wrong about the mouth. Upon the whole the Print is not so far as I can judge as like the Picture; intercepting where I have abovementioned I cannot tell where the defects are.` With blank integral leaf. VG Sir George Hayter painted two portraits of the Duke of Wellington, one of which is housed in the National Portrait Gallery, and the other in Kings College, London. He also painted Wellington viewing Napoleon`s effigy at Madame Tussauds, which was destroyed in 1925.

Vintage signed 8.5 x 6.5 photograph depicting Monty, wearing his military uniform and cap, walking at the centre of two other men in the grounds of Repton School in 1954. Together with a blue fountain pen ink signature (`Montgomery of Alamein F.M.`) on a slim oblong 8vo piece removed from a daily orders sheet from H.M.S. Rodney and bearing a printed portrait drawing of Monty (some creasing and light age wear). MACARTHUR DOUGLAS: (1880-1964) American Military Leader of World War II. Vintage signed postcard photograph, being a reproduction of a pencil drawing of a head and shoulders portrait of MacArthur in uniform. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower white border. A Republic of the Philippines postage stamp featuring MacArthur`s portrait is affixed to the lower right corner of the image, postally cancelled at MacArthur, Leyte, 20th October 1950. The cancellation slightly affects the conclusion of MacArthur`s signature. With a second commemorative cancellation to the verso. A slight surface crease runs horizontally across the image. Together with John J. Pershing (1860-1948) American General. T.L.S., John J. Pershing, one page, 8vo, Paris, 22nd June 1937, to Major General Charles S. Farnsworth, on the printed stationery of the European office of the American Battle Monuments Commission. Pershing states that his correspondent will have received an invitation to be present at the unveiling of a monument erected on Montfaucon, further commenting `If you could realise the personal satisfaction it would give me to have you present with others who held important positions in the army during those grilling days of the Meuse-Argonne battle, I am sure your wish to be here would be all the greater.` With blank integral leaf. Professionally double matted in pale brown suede with decorative metal borders above a silver coloured metal engraved plaque featuring a biography.
