Some possibly localised restoration although not verified under uv light. In 18th c style giltwood and composition frame
‡ FOLLOWER OF SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE, PRA (1769-1830) PORTRAIT OF MRS SARAH VAUGHAN AND HER CHILDREN 90 x 69cm, in 18th c giltwod frame The sitter was the daughter of Philip Portheroe, MP for Bristol. ++Lined and cleaned in the mid 20th c and with some possible localised restoration although not verified under uv light. The varnish in need of a light clean. The frame with small losses and regilt. Note: a cutting from a dealer's catalogue on the reverse of the frame gives the picture to Sir Thomas Lawrence and provides details of the sitter with the comment that "this painting was purchased direct from the family."
ENGLISH NAIVE ARTIST, 19TH CENTURY PORTRAIT OF A PRIZE SHORT HORN BULL IN A LANDSCAPE, inscribed [on the tree] BRED & FED BY MR EVANS ALLPORT BAKEWELL 4 YEAR & 7 MONTHS, 50.5 x 72.5cm ++Some slight yellowing of the varnish, some old localised re-touching but the support not lined, torn, holed or repaired and on the original stretchers in what is likely to be the original ornate Victorian giltwood and composition frames with old small repairs
J C BUCHMANN (1826) PORTRAIT OF A CHILD seated full length, holding a rose in a landscape, signed J C Buchmann pinxt and dated verso, 74.5 x 62.5cm ++Small patched repair centre right but in otherwise good condition, the pigments well preserved, only a little darkened in certain passages. Pinhead sized spot of flaking paint upper right in what is probably the original giltwood and composition cavetto frame with small losses and repairs. An attractive subject.
‡ SAMUEL TONKISS (1909-1992) - HEAD OF LAURENCE STEPHEN LOWRY, RA, bronze, cast by the Maurice Singer Foundry London, in 1975, on slate plinth, 33cm h Samuel Tonkiss was born in Shropshire and moved to Todmorden in West Yorkshire, where he worked as a journalist. In 1959 he began to sculpt a series of portrait busts, some of which were cast in small editions. An earlier head of Lowry sculpted in 1971 is in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The present bust would appear to be extra to the edition of 36. Tonkiss wrote two autobiographies, Just for the Record and Raking Amongst the Embers. ++In fine condition

AN HISTORICALLY INTERESTING AMERICAN PRESENTATION PORTRAIT CANE FROM CAPTAIN SEMMES OF THE U.S. SHIPS ALABAMA TO JOHN LANCASTER, OWNER OF THE S.Y. DEERHOUND, 1864. the tapering wooden twist-barley shaft with white metal cuff engraved Presented to JOHN LANCASTER Esq ./owner of the steam yacht DEERHOUND/as a token of grateful appreciation of the actions of his Captain E.P. Jones in the rescue of officers & men/of the Confederate cruiser "ALABAMA", lost/gallantly in battle with the "KEARSARGE"/off Cherbourg, June 19, 1864/by Captain R. SEMMES, terminating in a portrait bust, probably Semmes, handle, 37in. (94cm.) high, Models of Alabama and Kearsarge are offered in lots 260 and 261 with a full description of their dramatic encounter. It is also well recorded that the resourceful Captain Semmes of Alabama evaded capture, along with about fifty of his men by the timely assistance of the Deerhound who had no doubt been enjoying the drama played out in the home waters of the English Channel.
