The present lot, Girl in an Interior reflects the pre-war life of the Leningrad intelligentsia, and is a continuation of the series of Samokhvalov’s works dedicated to young Russian women – builders of new life. This composition was created in 1940 – three-year after the artist’s famous Girl in a Football Shirt was awarded the gold medal at the International Art Fair in Paris, (which also included Pablo Picasso’s Guernica). The tenderness, refinement, and intimacy of this portrait is a rare work by a master of Soviet Socialist Realism and heir apparent to Petrov-Vodkin.

Leo Whelan RHA (1892-1956) OUR LADY QUEEN OF IRELAND, 1933 signed colour print signed in pencil in the margin and signed in the plate lower right; with title printed lower centre and a message from His Holiness, Pope Pius XI printed lower right and dated Sunday June 26, 1932 In its original frame of M.H. Gill O'Connell Street Dublin. The oil of Our Lady, Queen of Ireland was commissioned by the Gill family of Dublin - owners of the publishing company, which later became Gill and Macmillan. The model for Our Lady was Sarah ('Sally') Byrne (later Deale), a student of Seán Keating's at the College of Art and later a staff member there. Her portrait was widely painted by her contemporaries at the time, including Keating whose son Justin was the model for the figure of the child in the present work. Justin later became a Labour Party minister in the 1970s government of Liam Cosgrave. In his article - Taking a politician unawares - for the Irish Times on June 16, 2012 Michael Parsons reflected on the artwork commissioned for the 31st International Eucharistic Congress in Dublin 80 years ago and focused on the present work. Parson's noted that, "…According to the Catholic Bulletin, a framed print [similar to the present example we can assume] was presented to Pope Pius XI in the Vatican in 1934 and the artist was praised for depicting the "Madonna", for the first time, with "Gaelic features"." 12¼ x 10¼in. HILLARY EDMUND: (1919-2008) New Zealand Mountaineer, the first man, with Tenzing Norgay, to reach the summit of Mount Everest, 1953. A superb vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph by Hillary, a silver gelatin print depicting the mountaineer in a rugged and windswept head and shoulders pose wearing a thick anorak, the collars turned up to protect his neck. Photograph by Karsh of Ottawa and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. Signed ('E. P. Hillary') in dark fountain pen ink to the image. Signed photographs of Hillary of this quality are rare and desirable. About EX Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) Armenian-Canadian Photographer, one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century. Karsh took the present image of Hillary in 1960. Hillary, alongside Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, became the first confirmed climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest on 29th May 1953. The New Zealander had become interested in mountaineering while in secondary school and had made his first major climb in 1939. As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition Hillary reached the South Pole overland in 1958 and subsequently reached the North Pole, making him the first person to reach both poles and summit Everest. Hillary and Tenzing were part of the ninth British expedition to Mount Everest, led by John Hunt, and following his ascent of Everest, Hillary devoted most of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Time magazine named Hillary one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

[BYRON LORD]: (1788-1824) British Poet, a leading figure in the Romantic Movement. MILBANKE ANNE ISABELLA (1792-1860) Lady Byron. Wife of George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron, from 1815-16. Two A.Ls.S., A I Noel Byron, both two pages, 8vo, Brighton and Regents Park, 1st April and 12th July 1856, each to [Revd. George] Armstrong. In the first letter Lady Byron replies to her correspondent and states 'I can only say that the evidence is in my opinion against the genuineness of those lines - It is difficult to prove a negative however' and adding that she will make enquiries 'to elicit the truth'. She continues 'I do not believe that any Lady was authorised to write that life'. In the second letter Lady Byron declares 'I have satisfied myself as to the quarter from which the lines in question proceeded. Certainly not from any Lady of the respectability of the one named in your letter' and continues 'Mr. Grant has been imposed upon, but whether consciously or unconsciously by the Gentleman (for of him I have no knowledge) I cannot say. Mr. Grant's statement in his letter does not agree in all points with that made to me in writing at the time by the Gentleman who had the interview with him - on my behalf. To take any further notice of the matter would probably fall in with the views of the originators of this forgery'. Both letters with blank integral leaves. An intriguing pair of letters concerning a Byron forgery. Some light age wear and very minor, light staining, otherwise VG, 2 Revd. George Armstrong (1791-1857) Unitarian Minister, a vociferous opponent of slavery, as was Lady Byron. Byron forgeries are not uncommon. The self-styled 'Major Byron' who claimed to be the son of the poet as a result of a liaison between Byron and a Countess de Luna in Spain in 1809, contributed both poems and letters to the field. Lady Caroline Lamb forged a letter from Byron to herself with the purpose of acquiring a portrait of the poet. The identity of the lady referred to in the present letters is not known. A highly educated and strictly religious woman, Anne Isabella Milbanke's marriage to the amoral and agnostic poet George Gordon Byron seemed an unlikely match and, indeed, soon ended in acrimony. However the marriage did produce a daughter, Ada, who later worked as a mathematician with Charles Babbage. Lady Byron had felt that an education in mathematics and logic would counteract any possible inherited tendency towards Lord Byron's insanity and romantic excess.

PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish Painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. An exceptional vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph of Picasso standing outdoors in a half length pose wearing an overcoat, scarf and with a plain dark beret upon his head. In one hand he holds a lit cigarette. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink at the head of the image, 'Para Jaime Sabartes, esta fotografia hecha en Tolosa en donde estuviamos juntos este invierno, Picasso' and dated 1946 in his hand. A very fine signed portrait with an excellent association. Lightly mounted and professionally and handsomely matted in white and framed and glazed in a plain, light coloured wooden frame to an overall size of 20.5 x 24.5. VG Jaime Sabartes (1881-1968) Catalan Spanish Artist, Poet and Writer. Sabartes was a close personal friend of Picasso whom he first met in 1899 (the same year in which Picasso painted his first portrait of Sabartes). In 1935 Sabartes became Picasso's secretary and administrator, organising his papers, books and poems, as well as taking responsibility for arranging exhibitions. Sabartes collected a great many works by Picasso which he donated to the Museu Picasso in Barcelona in 1963 forming the core of this gallery which was initially known as the Sabartes collection. His books and papers were donated to the Museo Picasso in Málaga. The inscription on the present photograph translates as 'For Jaime Sabartes, this photograph was made in Tolosa where we were together this winter, Picasso'. Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years and went on to create art in a variety of mediums (paintings, sculptures, ceramics) and also worked as a stage designer, poet and playwright. One of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, he is remembered for co-founding the Cubist movement.

PLANCK MAX: (1858-1947) German Theoretical Physicist, noted for his work on quantum theory. Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1918. An outstanding vintage signed 9.5 x 13 photograph of Planck in a head and shoulders pose looking directly towards the camera in a determined manner. Photograph by Lotte Jacobi and signed ('Jacobi') by her in bold pencil to the lower photographer's mount. Signed ('Dr. Max Planck') by Planck in bold, dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to the lower photographer's mount. Framed and glazed in the original plain black wooden frame (bearing the Ryman & Co. Ltd., Fine Art Dealers, of High Street, Oxford, framer's original printed label pasted to the verso) to an overall size of 10 x 13.5. Some very light, extremely minor silvering to the edges of the image and some equally minor, extremely light staining to the photographer's mount, not affecting the signature, otherwise VG The present portrait was captured (and signed) by the German-American photographer Johanna Alexandra 'Lotte' Jacobi (1896-1990). An accomplished portrait photographer, her other subjects included Albert Einstein, Robert Frost, Marc Chagall, J. D. Salinger, W. H. Auden, Martin Buber, Chaim Weizmann and many others. Jacobi travelled from assignment to assignment with her equipment, bringing her studio to the models. Her preference was to make subjects most at ease before taking a photograph, an interesting policy given Planck's apparently determined expression in the present image. Provenance: The present photograph was signed for Sir Harold Thompson (1908-1983) English Physical Chemist who graduated in 1929 and worked with Planck in Berlin. He returned to Oxford in 1930 (at which time he evidently had the present photograph framed) after receiving a Ph.D. from the Friedrich Wilhelm University of Berlin. The photograph was acquired directly by the vendor from a member of Thompson's family.  Max Planck made many contributions to theoretical physics, but his fame as a physicist rests primarily on his role as an originator of quantum theory, which revolutionised human understanding of atomic and subatomic processes.

ELIZABETH II & PRINCE PHILIP: ELIZABETH II (1926-     ) Queen of the United Kingdom 1952-     & PRINCE PHILIP (1921-     ) Duke of Edinburgh, husband and consort of Queen Elizabeth II. An excellent, large signed colour 21.5 x 29.5 photograph by both Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip individually, the formal image showing the Queen seated in a full length pose and with her husband standing in a full length pose behind her. Framed and glazed in the original gold coloured wooden frame (some minor faults) to an overall size of 24 x 32. A particularly fine signed Royal portrait, and quite desirable in this larger format. About EX Peter Grugeon (1918-1980) English Photographer, famous for his portraits of the British Royal family from in the 1970s. In 2015 Queen Elizabeth II became the longest reigning British monarch, surpassing the reign of her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, and is the longest reigning Queen regnant and female head of state in world history. (See also lots 125 & 140) Following World War II Philip was granted permission by King George VI to marry Elizabeth. Before the official announcement of their engagement, he abandoned his Greek and Danish royal titles and became a naturalised British subject, adopting the surname Mountbatten from his maternal grandparents. After an engagement of five months, he married Elizabeth on 20 November 1947. Just before the wedding, he was created Duke of Edinburgh. He is the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch and the oldest-ever male member of the British royal family.

ROYAL CHILDREN OF KING GEORGE V: An exceptional and rare vintage signed sepia 8 x 9.5 photograph by each of the six children of King George V and Queen Mary individually, comprising -             Edward, Prince of Wales (1894-1972) later King Edward VII, then Duke of Windsor             Prince Albert, Duke of York (1895-1952) later King George VI             Mary, Princess Royal (1897-1965) later Countess of Harewood             Prince Henry (1900-1974) later Duke of Gloucester             Prince George (1902-1942) later Duke of Kent, and             Prince John (1905-1919) The image depicts the six children standing together in full length poses in two rows on the outdoor steps of a royal residence. Princess Mary stands in the centre of the back row, flanked by the two future Kings of England, the two youngest Princes standing immediately before them on the front row, each wearing sailor suits and with their brother's hands resting on their shoulders. Prince Henry is attired in a formal suit and stands in the centre of the front row with his sister placing one hand on his left shoulder. Photograph by W & D Downey of London, and from the appearance of the children most likely taken around 1910. Signed by the children in bold, black fountain pen inks, each with their names alone to the photographer's mount. Each of the children have signed using their family names; Edward, Prince of Wales signing himself 'David', Prince Albert, Duke of York signing himself 'Bertie', the Princess Royal signing herself 'Mary', Prince Henry signing himself 'Harry', Prince George signing himself 'Georgie' and Prince John signing himself 'Johnnie' in a small, neat hand, in capital letters. Very slightly neatly trimmed to the lower edge, otherwise VG Very slightly neatly trimmed to the lower edge, otherwise VG An extremely rare signed Royal family portrait.  The fact that each of the children have signed their family names on the present photograph would indicate that it was originally presented to an individual closely associated with the family, and most likely another Royal family member. Each of the children of King George V were born before he became King in 1911. Prince George, when Duke of York, had married Princess Mary of Teck on 6th July 1893. They had five sons and one daughter together, two of whom would become Kings themselves. Their youngest son, Prince John, who caused the King and his consort great anxiety for many years, tragically died at the young age of 13 after a lifetime of ill health. Randolph Churchill claimed that King George was a strict father, to the extent that his children were terrified of him. The King apparently once remarked to the Earl of Derby, 'My father was frightened of his mother, I was frightened of my father, and I am damned well going to see to it that my children are frightened of me'.

WARHOL ANDY: (1928-1987) American Pop Artist. A large folio printed edition of Interview magazine, entitled The Movies "A" to "Z", September 1985, Vol. XV, No.9, published by Warhol, the colour front cover featuring a close-up portrait of actor Sylvester Stallone as boxer Rocky Balboa. Signed ('Andy Warhol') by Warhol in bold black ink with his name alone to a clear area of the front cover. A few minor, small tears and stains to the edges of the covers and some very light overall age wear, not affecting the signature, otherwise VG Sylvester Stallone (1946-     ) is perhaps most famous for his screen role as Rocky Balboa in a series of seven films made between 1976 and 2015. Rocky IV, the most financially successful film in the series, was released in 1985, the same year as the present magazine. Stallone and Warhol's paths crossed on several occasions, beginning in 1979 in New York. On each occasion Stallone recalls Warhol taking his portrait.  Warhol was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as Pop Art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. His New York City studio, The Factory, was a well-known gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities and wealthy patrons. Warhol is credited with coining the widely-used expression '15 minutes of fame'.

Shackleton apologises to his correspondent for not having answered their letter, explaining that he has been away, and adds 'I will call one morning myself for the portrait in the near future. Would you please let me know what the cost is?' With blank integral leaf (small tear at the upper edge). VGCharles Büchel (1872-1950) British Artist. A well-known figure in theatrical circles, Büchel painted portraits of Henry Irving, Lillie Langtry and George Alexander and also designed programmes and posters for the theatre. Intriguingly, the present whereabouts of Büchel's portrait of Shackleton are not known. The present letter, and two related ones, would appear to be the only evidence of its existence. What would seem clear from the present lot is that the portrait was completed and that it came into Shackleton's own possession.Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton led three British expeditions to the Antarctic and is one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His first experience of the polar regions was as third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott's Discovery Expedition 1901-04. In the preface to his 1922 book The Worst Journey in the World, Apsley Cherry-Garrard, one of Scott's team on the Terra Nova Expedition, wrote 'For a joint scientific and geographical piece of organisation, give me Scott; for a Winter Journey, Wilson; for a dash to the Pole and nothing else, Amundsen: and if I am in the devil of a hole and want to get out of it, give me Shackleton every time'.

ADAMS MARCUS: (1875-1959) British Society Photographer, noted for his portraits of children. An interesting archive of letters, personal papers, original photographs and drawings etc., previously belonging to Adams, featuring correspondence between Adams and his sitters, most notably the young Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen Elizabeth II, and quite possibly including the earliest signature of the monarch (aged 3 years) to have ever appeared at auction. The archive includes – (i)                 An extremely early, bold pencil signature (‘Elizabeth’) by Princess Elizabeth, at just 3 years of age and most likely executed with the assistance of her nurse, Clara Knight (1879-1946), known as ‘Allah’ within the Royal household, at the foot of an A.L.S. C Knight, by Knight, one page, 8vo, Piccadilly, 18th December 1929, to Marcus Adams, announcing ‘Your beautiful holly has made us look like Xmas already! The Princess says I am to say “Thank you very much for your lovely holly”. I don’t think I have ever seen such wonderful berries’.(ii)               A remarkable and charming series of three folio sheets of paper removed from Marcus Adams’ sketchbook and featuring a series of bold pencil sketches and doodles accomplished by the three year old Princess Elizabeth, with the assistance of the photographer, the first image is open to interpretation and depicts the head and neck of what could either be described as a somewhat fierce looking animal with cat like features, or a human with a rather angry stare, annotated by Adams ‘Drawn by Marcus Adams July 31st 1929 with the aid of Princess Lillybet (sic) in the children’s studio, London’, the outline of the drawing, including the ears, most likely in the hand of the Princess and the facial features, in particular the eyes, most likely in the hand of Adams. A long arched line appears above the drawing, again annotated by Adams, ‘This line was drawn by Princess Lillybet (sic) July 31st 1929’, the page also featuring the surname ‘Adams’ written in capital letters, evidently by the photographer himself. The second page features a pencil list in the hand of Adams (including ‘Bulbs, Seeds, Roses, Sweetpeas’ and other garden and household items) over which appear a series of drawings of animal heads, most resembling cats, again evidently drawn principally by Adams in an attempt to teach the young Princess how to draw, but also with some less well accomplished drawings of animal heads, undoubtedly the efforts of the Princess. The third page features a pencil drawing by Adams of a large country house and gardens, with a sole figure walking across the lawn and with a large tree in the foreground, the page featuring a series of somewhat random and bolder pencil lines, scribbles and circles etc., obviously the work of the young Princess. The name Lilybet appears at the base of the page, in the hand of Adams, and is heavily crossed through in pencil, presumably by the Princess.(iii)             A rare, early A.L.S., Elizabeth, one page, 8vo, Piccadilly, 18th December 1933, to Marcus Adams (‘Dear Mr. Adams’), stating, in full, ‘Ever so many thanks for the lovely holly you sent me today, and the Xmas cards. Wishing you a very happy xmas, from Elizabeth’. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by the Princess. Some light overall staining and soiling, slightly affecting the text and signature.(iv)              A fascinating autograph manuscript signed (‘Marcus Adams’) by Adams entitled ‘Notes’ on my contacts with the Royal Family from 1928 to present day, nine pages, 4to, n.p., 1958, stating, in part, ‘…the curtain is completely raised to reveal the understanding of prophecy. The world will be awakened to realise the importance of this age and how vital the birth of Princess Elizabeth is in the fulfilment of things come…For this reason I appreciate… and feel highly honoured to have had the opportunity of making exclusive portrait records of the early life of this important personality……I have produced a series of portraits that convey the dignity of Royalty combined with a standard that justify my efforts, they are not just mere snapshots taken in a careless and casual fashion that may be news today and forgotten soon after… but never reach the standard of dignity that the Royal family deserve…Events can be recalled at the time of the Coronation of King George, when in one day over 200 called at the studio for press copies… to say nothing for the telephone calls… It was estimated that one particular group was produced… to some thousand million imprints. Besides the actual press there was always a constant request for right to reproduce… on mugs, jigsaw puzzles, handkerchiefs… babies rattles, almanacs, these all had be considered on their own merits, if any doubt was involved it was always referred to the Controllers of the Palace …I well remember on one occasion at Windsor the leading cable got so warmed up it showed signs of burning…I recall an incident that happened during the sitting my assistant whispered to me that the focussing screen had smashed. I met the circumstance calmly by taking two stamps from my wallet and sticking it together. The King who was always alert, remarked What’s the trouble Adams, Oh only the screen is broken and I am mending the bits with two of your fathers portraits, they acted in a perfect fashion and we can proceed with all speed….I was working with the late Queen Mary and Princess Elizabeth, she was in a great hurry, so I lost no time… After I had finished my part Her Majesty turned to Mr. [Bertram] Park and said, As Marcus Adams has been so quick I can spare you time to make some pictures of me, which dress would you like best… Thus Mr. Parks made some interesting studies, whilst I acted as his assistant. She [Elizabeth] was a child and I treated her as a child… a sitting would last about an hour. PRINCE ROGERS NELSON: (1958-2016) American Singer & Songwriter, mononymously known as Prince. Signed 8 x 10 photograph, an atmospheric and engaging image of the talented singer and musician in a head and shoulders pose, reminiscent of the Purple Rain stage of his career. The Warner Bros. publicity portrait is credited to photographer Al Beaulieu and dated November 1982. Signed, 'Love God, Prince', in bold black ink to the image, the signature running across a partially darker area of the image. Rare. His compositions integrated a wide variety of musical styles, contributing to sales of over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. PIAF EDITH: (1915-1963) French Singer. An exceptional vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9 photograph by Piaf, the close-up portrait depicting Piaf in a very early pose. The promotional Polydor image, dating from around 1935/36, bears the printed caption Môme Piaf ('Little Sparrow') and is signed and inscribed by Piaf with an early form of her signature in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area at the head of the image, 'Pour Maurice Detaille avec toute ma grande amitie, Edith Piaf'. Signed photographs of Piaf from this very early stage of her career are extremely rare, and the present example also has a good association. EX Maurice Detaille - French Impresario associated with the ABC Music Hall in Paris in the 1930s and whom also had a professional relationship with Edith Piaf (as well as other French stars including Charles Trenet and Marie Dubas, herself an inspiration for Piaf).  Piaf, the French cabaret singer, songwriter and actress, became widely regarded as France's national chanteuse, as well as being one of her country's greatest international stars. Her music was often autobiographical with her singing reflecting her life and particularly the elements of love, loss and sorrow. Piaf has acquired a legacy as one of the greatest performers of the 20th century and her voice and music continue to be celebrated globally.
