He studied at Glasgow School of Art when William Armour was head of drawing and painting and David Donaldson was the ubiquitous influence. Goudie, as a student at Glasgow, demonstrated his extraordinary ability. He received the Somerville Shanks Prize for Composition and, later, his draughtsmanship and sense of colour was recognized with the award of the Newbery Medal. As a young artist, he grew up admiring three great masters, Sir John Lavery, George Henry and James Guthrie; all artists who had bridged the gap between Glasgow and Paris. There was magic and vision in his art and, I expect, history will be kind to him.'' Note: After graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1993, Wilcox continues to prosper as a painter based in Glasgow. He exhibits regularly in solo shows and group exhibitions throughout the UK and Europe. Recent work depicts people and events experienced in public spaces around the city. These paintings show figures engaged in ambiguous actions in half-remembered spaces. These situations and scenes have lodged in the memory due to some resonance or poignancy that can't quite be dismissed. The resulting paintings are partly an attempt to balance a sense of stillness with a sense of movement; a tension that hopefully generates a heightened feeling of the strangeness of everyday life and those around us. Graeme has collaborated on a number of multimedia projects with Mischief-la-bas-performance group and with other artists, culminating in projects at the Arches and Tramway in Glasgow and the Albany Theatre in London. He has also organised two large scale mural projects in collaboration with the East End Community Arts for Glasgow Health Board and devised and ran "Face to Face" photography project in Glasgow. This Arts Council funded project culminated in a temporary public artwork at the East End Festival in Glasgow. In 2011 he completed a prestigious portrait commission for the newly opened Conway Hall in London. Graeme's work is held in private collections in Europe, the USA and Canada and in public collections in Petrezovodsk, Russia and the Gulf State of Qatar. He is also held in the Corporate Collection of the Royal Bank of Scotland, Edinburgh. The image itself was named as ''the most recognised photograph'' in the history of the National Geographic magazine and her face became famous as the cover photograph on the June 1985 issue. The photo has also been widely used on Amnesty International brochures, posters, and calendars. The identity of the ''Afghan Girl'' remained unknown for over 17 years until McCurry and a National Geographic team located the woman, Sharbat Gula, in 2002.

* HERBERT WHONE (BRITISH 1925 - 2011),THE PORTRAIT OF SIR ADRIAN BOULT (Conductor)oil on canvas, signed and dated '57image size 51cm x 31cm, overall size 62cm x 42cm Framed.Provenance: illustrated on page eleven of "Herbert Whone, Glasgow - In Transition" (a 112 page illustrated hardback book). Herbert Whone was born in Bingley, West Yorkshire, where his parents were both employed in the cloth mills. He was encouraged by his mother to ''improve'' himself culturally, and from an early age took photographs and practised the violin. After education at the Royal Manchester College of Music (now the Royal Northern College of Music) and Manchester University, he secured positions in the Royal Opera House Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra, before moving to Glasgow in 1955, where he took up the position of Deputy Leader of the Scottish National Orchestra. During his early time in Glasgow he focussed on painting portraits of fellow members of the Orchestra. He was inspired by Glasgow's changing fortunes and went on to paint series of notable canvases featuring the beauty of a city and surrounding areas in transition. His paintings of trams and shipbuilding on and around the Clyde, to pick two of his fondest subjects, were presented with warmth and beauty, almost impressionistic in their depiction of glowing sunsets and use of rich colour. Herbert Whone (often incorrectly catalogued as Herbert Bannister Whone, his father's name) continued to paint long after his departure from Glasgow in 1964 and made several trips back to Scotland to paint, but It's the relatively small body of work produced in and around the city that stands testament to his exceptional talent. Whone's paintings, while always highly collected and critically acclaimed, were until recently, still to attain the full recognition and commercial value they deserve and which we predicted they would eventually achieve. Known collectors of Herbert Whone's paintings included Joan Eardley, Margot Sandeman, Cyril Gerber, Johnny Beattie and Magnus Magnusson. Growing collector interest in Herbert Whone has seen his auction record price being beaten on an almost annual basis in recent years. This is even more impressive as auction appearances of his Glasgow paintings are becoming ever rarer. Public collections include: Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, The Hepworth, Kirklees Museums & Galleries, Salford Museums & Galleries and The Mercer Gallery (Harrogate). During 2021 two new UK auction records were achieved for Herbert Whone in our auctions at prices of £13,000 and then £18,000 (both hammer prices). Whone's Glasgow pictures are now beginning to receive the collector attention they so richly deserve but this is, so far as we can ascertain, the first time one of his portraits has appeared at auction.

Porzellangestalter Zeichner Grafiker, 6 March 2020-21 February 2021The identity of this portrait bust has not been conclusively established, though it closely resembles a portrait of a lady wearing a négligé titled 'Lilo' that Scheurich painted in 1930 that probably depicts the Berlin actress and diseuse, Liselott (Lilo) Wilke (Rafael 1995a, ill. 41.1).When Scheurich sent the model to Max Adolf Pfeiffer in April 1930 he requested only RM 750; he wrote '...because I know how difficult items of this type are to sell.'
