A collection of six documents comprising two receipts signed by Lady Mar (as "Countes of Mar" and "Marie Stewart"), 1629 and 1633, an undated submission signed (twice) by Lord and Lady Mar and by the future third Earl and others of the family, to abide by the adjudication of Alexander Gibson, Lord of Durie (d.1644), Judge Arbiter (beginning: "This blank On the uther syd of the bak heirof is to be fillit up betvix the honorabill parties followeing with the decreit and sentence arbitrall to be gewis and pronunceit be the rycht honorabill Sir Alexander Gibson of Durie knycht and of the senators of the colledge of justice as only judge arbitrator and amitabill compositor newtrallie and indefferentlie nominat electit and chosin for ane nobil and potent erle of Johne erle of Mar lord Erskine and garioche and Johne lord Erskine his sone for thamselffis..."), two financial instrument signed by Lord Mar, 1616 and 1626, and a receipt signed by George Monorgon "sumtyme servitor to umquhile Dame Marie Stewart Countes of Mar", 1647, tipped into a copy of Extracts from the Household Book of Lady Marie Stewart, Daughter of Esme, Duke of Lenox, and Countess of Mar, [edited by Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe], [Edinburgh: s.n. 1815], engraved portrait frontispiece and one other plate, some leaves loose, edges untrimmed, original boards with later sheep spine, upper board detached and spine torn at head & foot, 4to John Erskine, 18th or 2nd Earl of Mar (c.1562-1634) courtier and politician, was the eldest son of John Erskine, 17th or 1st Earl of Mar (d.1572, former Regent of Scotland), and his wife, Annabella Murray (d.1603). The From the age of ten he was educated along side the young James VI and cousins Thomas Erskine and George Erskine. In 1592 he took as his second wife, in a marriage arranged by James VI and I, Lady Mary Stuart (or Stewart, d.1644), daughter of Esm‚, first Duke of Lennox, James's boyhood favourite and first cousin of his father Darnley, who had ruled Scotland for twenty months in 1580-82 before being removed from power by Mar himself. Mar was James's negotiating channel with Sir Robert Cecil before his accession, Keeper of Prince Henry and, in 1616, appointed Treasurer of Scotland. Lady Mary's steward, George Monorgon, who has signed the last receipt, was responsible for keeping her Household Book. Provenance The Collection of Sir Jocelyn Stevens, CVO (1932-2014). (1)
