JOHN RUSSELL, R.A. (BRITISH, 1745-1806), Portrait of Captain Matthews, R.N. bust-length, in full dress uniform, signed and dated in pencil ‘J. Russell RA pinxt./1800-’ (upper left), pastel and bodycolour, 23½ x 165?8in. (59.7 x 42.2cm.), Of the several “Matthews” listed for this period, only one attained the rank of the sitter. John Matthews was made a Captain on 13th September 1793 and was still serving in this rank when he died on 21st March 1798, indicating this is a posthumous commemorative image. Provenance: Christie’s, King Street British Watercolours 8th April 1997, lot 14 (£2,760)

A WAX RELIEF PORTRAIT OF NELSON BY CATHERINE ANDRAS, 1805, the 3in. bust-length image modelled in light-brown wax, signed and dated under the epaulette C. Andras 1805, mounted on black and contained within a period gilt frame with domed glass -- 6¼in. (16cm.) high, Catherine Andras, together with her adoptive father, Robert Bowyer, and John Whichelo were the last three artists to capture Nelson at Merton in September 1805. Andras’s profile was immediately popular and drew praise from Lady Hamilton, and the Dean & Chapter of Westminster Abbey commissioned their life-size wax effigy to compete with Nelson’s tomb at St. Paul’s as a direct consequence. The profile was also much imitated by other artists, such as Tassie, for use on medallions.

IN THE MANNER OF SIR GODFREY KNELLER - Portrait of William III, oil on canvas, 71cms x 61cms in 19th Century carved giltwood and gesso frame ++has been re-lined, some slight marks to surface of painting to the left hand side, could do with a clean. Frame has some very small chips otherwise good

Walters The first depicting a young gentleman wearing high necked collar, cravat, jacket before a burnt umber ground, the companion picture a lady with pink dress and curled black coiffured hair against a deep violet background, each mounted giltwood and gilt gesso carved frames, 20x19cm (2). CONDITION REPORT: Lot 39: Each good condition, portrait of lady with vertical line running beside face. Very difficult to see, rubbing to gilding on frames and cracks, I think they are painted on ivory, see image.
