Whilst it is not possible to confirm the sitter with certainty, Louisa Newnham, daughter of Judge George LewisNewnham, is a likely candidate owing to the fashion being worn which dates to around 1820. Louisa married Sir Thomas Crosse Legh in 1812. The sitter is depicted resting on Lot 320. Measurements do not include the frame unless specified. Condition Report: The canvas has been relined and presents a small dotted paint loss to the centre left border, as well as a few, yet hardly noticeable, superficial scratches, and a apparent craquelure across the whole surface. UV light reveals various retouches, most evidently in the dark section of the background to the right border, as well as various retouches to the table in the lower right corner. Other retouches, yet more subtle, are present in the sitter's hair. In addition, a few retouches are present on the sitter's dress, most notably to armpit, and the area of the chest. Finally, there is an unevenly applied varnish across the whole surface. A scratch to the centre left. Paint loss to centre right edge. Inspection under UV light reveals. Creases above the sitter's eye, and to the left of the hairline. Inspection under UV reveals retouching to the face, notably approx. 3 cm wide patched area to the centre of the sitter' forehead. Small areas to the sitter's eyes nostril, and ,mouth. Extensive retouching to the background which is also visible to the naked eye. To conclude, scattered retouching on the man's jacket, as well as a green varnish unevenly applied across the whole surface.
