‡A COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS BY PATRICK PHILLIPS, A.R.W,S., R.P. (1907-1976), 1926-29 Trained at the Byam Shaw School of Drawing and Painting under Francis E Jackson, Charles Shannon and Glyn Philpot.1933 onwards teaching at the Byam Shaw School,1940-45 War Service, 1946-55 Co-Principal of the Byam Shaw School.1954 elected to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.1968 elected to the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours.1977 The Chantrey Bequest purchased his portrait of Mrs Carter Gifford for the Nation. Phillips’ portraits are widely held in the National Collections as well as Tate. His commissioned work included leading personalities of the age - among them the Queen Mother. Regarded by his masters and his students as a draughtsman of exceptional talent, his work, based on unerring drawing, subtlety of tone and sensitive brushwork, goes further than mere technical merit and displays a profound empathy for his subjects. Phillips was something of a naturalist, a real countryman, and his landscapes in oil and watercolour capture rapidly and with simplicity the weather and lights of England and France. Emotion. ‘This is the Key to all work that is of any consequence’. Drawing. ‘ is to my mind the simplest method of showing the structure of things... because of its simplicity and structural ability, it is of first importance to all Artists and Craftsmen’. Portraiture. ‘The essential of a portrait as opposed to a head or figure painting, is a portrayal of the character of the sitter. To make this portrayal tell to best advantage the lighting must be simple and fall fairly fully on the features, thus producing a readable pattern of tone. The colour scheme should be kept simple so that the portrait can predominate. The simpler the pose, colour and tonal design, the more the portrait will tell’...... from the artist’s notebooks PATRICK PHILLIPS ARWS RP (1907-1976) A Folio Box containing unframed pencil, ink and wash sketches, mostly figure studies and portraits, subjects include: ‘The Philatelist’; ’Kneeling female nude’; ‘A seated female Nude’; and ‘Standing male Nude’, varying sizes 15 x 11 in (38.2 x 27.9cm) and smaller; (approx 100)
